Updated Speculation that Wayne Rooney could shortly be returning to Everton is gathering steam amid reports that the England international has been withdrawn from Manchester United's pre-season trip to the United States.

The move is reportedly in preparation for a switch to Goodison Park, most likely on loan in a deal that will see the Blues pay half of the forward's massive wages.

This comes in the wake of an assertion by Jim White that “it's almost inevitable Wayne Rooney will be back at Everton”.

The talkSPORT and Sky Sports presenter, who claims to have the inside track to the top of the Blues' hierarchy, made the statement on the radio station yesterday.

Rooney has been linked with a return to Goodison Park for weeks, ever since it emerged that he could leave Manchester United this summer after more than a decade with the Red Devils.

More recently, however, speculation has had it that United are less keen than before to pay off the final year of his massive contract at Old Trafford which has led to talk that he could come back to Everton on a temporary basis.

"I was told by the top of the house at Everton, it is almost inevitable Wayne Rooney will be back," White said.

The claim comes on the heels of a hint to the same effect on Twitter from the club's former Head of Communications, Alan Myers, who tweeted that a high-profile player could arrive before 31st August and that Evertonians would "remember the name."
