Substance to Costa loan links?

| Monday, 28 August 2017 86comments  |  Jump to last
A rumour on Twitter that Atletico Madrid have agreed a £45m deal with Chelsea that will see Diego Costa return to his former club after joining Everton on loan has been causing a stir this afternoon.

The Spanish international striker has been linked with the Blues over the past week or so as the media have picked up and run with Ronald Koeman's coyness when he was asked about the possibility of signing him on loan.

Costa has been trying to engineer a move back to Atletico all summer but the Spanish club's six-month transfer embargo has complicated his efforts.

A post by Sergio Ortiz of ConexionATM, which appears to be a fan video channel, claims that the Madrid club have finally settled on a fee with Chelsea and that they will loan Costa out to Everton, but doesn't specify whether it would be until January or for the rest of the current season.

Thus far, there has been no corroboration of the claim by any even half-reputable media outlet.

He's going to love the service he gets from our MF.

If this is true a season long loan would make more sense.

If an agreement can be reached, then I see no reason why this couldn't happen, but I must add, that we should bring in someone else, either Vardy or Zohore, on a permanent basis.

If this doesn't happen, he'll go to Atletico in January and we are back to where we started.

It will be an interesting run up to the deadline, because we still don't know who else is going, Mirallas, McCarthy, Barkley, and Niasse.

Wouldn't entertain a loan until January. It'd take 'til September to get him fit so a three month loan in effect. We should be looking for a permanent striker, and three midfielders with pace, and a defender! Yeh I mean it!

Can anyone really see us getting a top notch striker between now and Thursday? Some average Mexican player from Benfica, or a novice from the championship perhaps but a Vardy or a Costa (on a permanent) I just can't see happening at this late stage.

I hope I'm pleasantly surprised on Thursday evening but I doubt it.

Hopefully Colin it's a case of getting a couple of deals that have been in the ether for a while over the line, not just sticking a pin in a map of Europe with YouTube on the Iphone 6.

My first reaction was no chance, but it could be a way that Chelsea and Costa dodge the present impasse.

So stranger thing have happened before!

I thought a player couldn't play for three clubs in the same season?

Which would rule out a loan to Jan, would have to be the full season.

Daniel Lawrence
9 Posted 28/08/2017 at 18:33:24
This would be embarrassing and laughable. Like he's going to give a toss for three months. Would offer less than Valencia did over the season and he was average at best.
Unbelievable that 12 months after the farce at the end of the last window we appear to be in an even worse attacking position. At least last year we had Lukaku.
Colin Glassar

That's true Denis. It would have to be a season long loan.

CL football makes a big difference Sam. At least we've gone from Asda to M&S but we're still a fair distance from Harrods.

I think Dennis R (8) is right about you cant register for three clubs in a season.

Judging by some of the recent photos it would take three months to get him in shape.

With the amount of time we've had to prepare for Lukaku going it is extremely poor, indeed, that we are scrambling around for a striker. And we actually need 2 in. Not 1.
On Costa, if we are struggling to get anything in long term that Koeman finds acceptable, he will more than do short term. I remember United once bringing in Henrik Larsson for a 3 month loan. Costa can lead the line, he makes runs in behind, occupies center backs, can link and net.

But we really need some out and out pace. A striker that can run the channels and stretch sides. Without that the backs to the wall, soak pressure up performances will be the norm away from home against top sides. We have to possess some threat to get out and break. We have none. We are neat, tidy and inoffensive.

We also badly need a wide player. Not necessarily a winger. We lack a wide attacking midfielder to add some verve to a very one paced midfield. They tried to get Sissoko. Thankfully we missed that bullet, but I assume Walsh/Koeman had reasons for wanting to take him? Had perhaps identified in him some qualities that we lacked? We need to add legs and goals to our midfield. We need someone who can do that wide in a 4-4-2 and play wide in a 4-3-3, preferably left and right.

And there's also the thorny issue of the left sided centre back who can cover left back.

Sam Hoare

Colin we may have gone to M&S but we've bought a lot of sausage rolls. Solid and dependable perhaps but we need more variety and spice!

As much as I hate his antics, a season long loan would be perfect for us. There isn't anyone on the market at the moment that seems to fit in my view and money for Vardy, Deeney or some other second rate striker with zero sell on value should not be done.
Michael Lynch

Loan til January? No way.

Steve Carse
19 Posted 28/08/2017 at 19:13:51
If Atletico have agreed a fee with Chelsea surely they would want Costa wrapped in cotton wool for the next 4 months, and certainly not playing as a right side wing half!
Bill Gienapp
20 Posted 28/08/2017 at 19:18:25
Let's put aside the fact that I absolutely detest Diego Costa. A season-long loan would at least have some semblance of logic.

But a half-season loan? You've got to be kidding. Come January, we'd be in the exact same position we are now, only with even more limited options. Costa will be completely checked out, just killing time until he gets his move to Atletico, and will, in all likelihood, miss our toughest run of matches anyway. Gylfi missed almost the entire preseason, but at least kept himself hyper-fit. Costa, by all accounts, is lying on a beach in Brazil somewhere, sucking down pina coladas.

Steavey Buckley
21 Posted 28/08/2017 at 19:21:36
The thing about Costa he has had a strong enough will than most, to not only score but win matches, who very rarely takes prisoners on the field. Can be a beast of a player when his head is right.

Friends and fellow Blues - - wasn't sure where to put this post so I am trying here.

My name is George Mc Kane and I contribute regularly to TW and I also get
the media calling me for comments.

At last season's Man City Game - - French sports Channel FSF made a film of me going to The Dark House and onto Goodison - - I posted the link on TW - - FSF filmed me again for The Stoke Game - - regarding Rooney - - I had known his briefly as a young man.

They have just contacted me and would like to make a a short film of a fan walking across Stanley Park from Anfield towards Goodison - - I said maybe I should ask someone else and they have agreed - - so the point is would any local Evertonian be free this Thursday 31st August late morning'ish or early afternoon - - the camera guy has to fly back to Paris at 4.40ish - - it is a good opportunity for someone (they ask) who has been watching Everton for some time and has memories of Goodison to share - - they are decent - - the films they have shown of me are pretty good with no silliness - - anyone up for it - - I will meet you of course and introduce you - - you can call me any reasonable time on 07972611052 - - or email me on theyellowhouse - or via TW - - would be really nice to meet a "name".

Come on -- be nice to meet up.

Is the rule play for 3 clubs in a season, or be attached to 3?

Unless I'm mistaken he hasn't played pre-season for Chelsea, so if its play for... then a loan until Jan would be possible?

If true, this is utterly daft on so many levels.

First of all, he's sitting on a beach in Brazil. He's classic pantomime villain and not the type we should be touching with a barge pole.

Secondly, nothing says "small time club" more than being the beard in a deal to get him back to Athletico.

If this is truly what our club thinks is a suitable way of replacing Lukaku, then we truly are in the shit.

Where we thinking of playing him at the back, as that would be his only chance of getting a touch of the ball in a game, going off Sunday's terrible negative, slow, no ideas style of play. He would end up getting frustrated to death and probably end up going Awol on us until he's due to go to Atletico in January once he realises how shit we are.

Worst football I've seen us play Sunday tbh. Worst I've seen us play from preseason to date. We need shape, organisation and some ideas.

Steve 23, you're right. It's the FIFA 2 Rule: Players may be registered for a maximum of three clubs during the period from 1 July until 30 June of the following year. During this period, the player is only eligible to play in Official Matches for two clubs. Looks like it would bee a six month loan.

I have been a loyal and devoted blue for 62 years. I have enjoyed the glory years in the sixties and eighties and the roller-coaster rides in between and since.

Always proud to be an Evertonian and to support a club that so many others admire. We are the Peoples Club. We have been The School of Science. Our values and morals are second to none.

We do not want this snivelling, cheating, diving, snarling and vicious prima donna to be associated with our club. We all want success but not at any price and certainly not by abandoning our true values.

I may be slaughtered by many, but I would rather have another mediocre season with the usual exciting ups and the regular disappointing downs than be shouting for a team led by a cheat. If he comes, my support for my team will be suspended until he has gone. That is how strongly I feel.

We had Landon Donovan on loan for two months and no one complained.

I would have Costa until January no problem at all. I would prefer a season long loan obviously but imagine what he could do for us in those 6 months, we have 18 League games, six Europa League games as well as three rounds of the Milk err, Rumbelows err, Coca Cola err, Mickey Mouse Cup...
The lad is class, he's a nark and knows where the back of the net is. Ticks all the boxes are far as I can see.

31 Cheers, Barry

Costa - I think he has that competitive streak in him even if he's only here for a few months, he wants to get one over on his opponent/opposite CB's.

I think that just intrinsic in some players.

If he does come we won't have to worry about him causing long-term disharmony in the dressing room as he'll be off in Jan.

Kieran Kinsella
49 Posted 28/08/2017 at 23:12:50
Don't see the point. He's not match fit and would be off in a few months anyway. In terms of personality I'm thinking Eto 2.0. In terms of fitness I'm thinking Traore and Atsu. Chelsea have conned us twice already with these deals I'd rather get someone in who's more than a short term publicity stunt.

We're the chippies open today?

If someone had seen Costa ordering Chicken Fried Rice, I would have put a little more credence to the rumour, is he still on the Copacabana, with Barry Manilow, serving him Pena Coladas?

Still a few days to go, let's see what transpires!

James Stewart

I don't see the point in a half season loan, that is the old Everton.

With all the money we have I refuse to believe there isn't a quality striker who wants to join us for the long haul.

Nitesh Kanchan
52 Posted 29/08/2017 at 06:36:56
It's too late for that, James, not just for us but also for any club who want to sell their best players.

Diego Costa is the best option right now. I know how good he is, being an Atletico fan as well.

Bolasie, Coleman, McCarthy, Funes Mori and maybe Barkley will be back by the time he leaves and all we will need is a half-decent striker in January who can score 10 to 12 goals for 5 month with Sandro in support. Goals will be shared all around those players.

Going to Anfield with Costa and Rooney might actually make a difference in mentality for a change!

Roberto Birquet
55 Posted 29/08/2017 at 10:23:31
Of course it is frustrating and nervous for fans. But the fact we have not got a striker in yet tells me one of two things. Either there's no one out there – but I would not have allowed him to go then; or more likely, we are in the hunt for someone who thinks highly of himself.

The reason so many deals take until the final hour is that players are waiting around for better offers. By the time, deadline day evening comes, players know all the offers that they are gonna get, and only then decide which offer to take. It is likely we are in for more than one striker, but have to wait to see who is the best of those that would choose us come Thursday evening.

And as for left sided defenders, Ben Gibson hasn't gone anywhere yet. I bet he has a few offers, and will be waiting to see if a Champions League club makes an offer, or else Everton, if not Southampton, if not, bloody Brighton then.

Phil Walling

Nothing has changed. We're still hanging round until the eleventh hour to pick up what no-one else wants!

Not a penny of the TV money spent – just what's come in on sales. Moshiri's millions? Not coming in our direction, apparently .

James Marshall
57 Posted 29/08/2017 at 10:49:06
Costa can play for us until January because he hasn't played for Chelsea since the FA Cup final last season. He could then move to Madrid in January.
James Marshall
58 Posted 29/08/2017 at 10:51:30
It's also great idea. He's class, a born winner. Unlike some of the jokers we've had at our club in recent years. Evertonians would love him riling up the opposition. I'm a massive fan of Diego Costa. He winds people up and scores goals.
Rob Halligan
59 Posted 29/08/2017 at 11:09:01
According to the Mirror, Chelsea are close to selling Costa to Atletico Madrid for £30M. The report says Madrid can sign him but cannot play him until January, so the obvious solution is to loan him out.

For about 15 -16 league games and a few league cup games, I'd take a chance on him. Not sure if he would be eligible for Europe though?

Personally I can't see this happening though.

Agree with Some if the posters in that 6 month loan. No way. He hasn't had any preseason so it isn't like the Donovan loan. We'd probably get 6 weeks out of him.

Season loan however is a different matter.

Barry Sherlock
63 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:09:45
Would Costa be able to play in Europa League? I think not. He would have to go to Atletico in January without being cup-tied for Champions League. That means he would be able to play in 18 matches in total!

A good deal for Chelsea if you consider we would take points off their title rivals!!

David Barks
64 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:15:24
I hope to God this is nothing but pure speculation. If we were to take this guy on a half season loan just so he could go to Atletico it would be a disgrace and embarrassment to this club. He's not fit, would take him weeks to get fit, so we'd have three months of him. The Everton "Project" would be a complete joke if this happens.
Brian Harrison
65 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:36:48
I think it looks far too complicated to see how this deal could be put together in a couple of days. The only way would be if Chelsea agreed to sell Costa at the price they want to pay to Athletico but he can only sign for Athletico in the summer. Then they loan him to Everton and charge us a fee for the rest of the season.

I cant see any other option as he wants to play for Athletico and as many have said for it to be worthwhile for us it would have to be a loan till the end of the season. Although I am sure Chelsea or their fans wouldn't relish the sight of Costa scoring for Everton on a regular basis.

Fran Mitchell
66 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:38:15
Costa may not be able to play for Atlético dependent on the registration rule (max 2 clubs per season), and as it is a World Cup year he needs football.

Also, If was only to January, he could still play in the Champions League as the Europa League doesn't make him cup-tied for Champions League (although Champions League makes you cup-tied for the Europa League.

If itwas short term, It would still be better than most options available, and may give us a chance for someone like Dembele or Dolberg in January.

Steve Jenkins
67 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:44:28
Costa on loan or Lorente are short term solutions, which give us more time to find an a long-term solution.

Costa could see it as just a place to get fit but I think his competitive nature means he always wants to get the better of his opponent.

I have to agree with many of the comments, a main striker that can hold the ball up, with pace should have been a transfer priority from when Lukaku turned down his contract.

We brought in Klaassen (jury's out) & then brought in Sigurdsson.

Why bring in Klaassen & Sigurdsson as priorities, but leave if so late for the striker we badly need.

They're not identical but are similar.

We then messed around & took so long over Sigurdsson & quibbled over ٣M (which Kenwright will see as a victory).

It now looks like since the board went to sleep over a striker.

Yes, we have Rooney (not an out-and-out striker), Sandro I think can be a quality player given time but is young & learning & is not a striker to play up top on his own, he's a horses for courses striker depending on teams you play, tactics etc.

Calvert-Lewin – young and learning.

A real statement of intent would be to offer Celtic money they can't turn down for Dembele.

Pace, power and can finish.

Sandro could play off him or Dembele could play up top on his own.

This would round off what had otherwise been an excellent transfer window.

The striker however is vital & if we don't get it right it'll be the difference between 7th-10th, or a higher finish than last year closing down he gap on the top 4.

Nicholas Ryan
68 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:53:54
A short-term Costa loan, would be sensible, as it gives us time to set up a proper deal for a long-term striker in January; rather than making a panic buy now.
Steve Jenkins
69 Posted 29/08/2017 at 15:56:35
Also, a young player to develop to come through like DCL did, that Walsh has already identified, is George Hirst.

He looks the business to me & we previously bid for himim January.

I''m surprised that we haven't bid for him this summer and would like to see us bring him in and put him in the Un23s.

Give him 2/3 years and he'd be knocking on the first team door.

If anyone like myself was wondering what happened with Zirkzee apparently he's signed with Bayern.

RS backers know no bounds to their financing. They won't sell Coutinho and yet still splash out millions. They are going all out for Euro glory and to recoup most of it. Klopp better deliver this season.

Anyway enough of that crap as I am sure there will be plenty of activity between now and Thursday. Hopefully Everton will be all the better for it after the mediocrity at the Bridge.

Costa is not a likeable sort but is very dangerous and I for one would take him for the short term; failing that, Llorente wouldn't be to bad but I still prefer Josh King even if he comes over-priced.

I'd go for him.

Costa would be a great short term fix,

We're really lacking pace at the min , I've said all summer that we should try and sign Luan (rave reviews in Brazil and is very exciting) and Julian Brandt from Leverkusen (one of Germany's many kids who looks set for greatness).

If Chelsea can influence this I hope Bill us saying "Deliver us Costa on loan and Barkley is yours". If it's Atletico we need to deal with, it's a case of "we'll pay some of the transfer fee and keep him next season". It can't be beyond impresario Bill to pull this off, it's deals like this he does for a living.

Costa is worth paying a shed-load for even if it's for 3 or 4 months. If he gets us 6 points extra, that could be the difference. I'm sure the lad would jump at the opportunity to show Chelsea what they're missing and rub their noses in it before going to Atletico.

Could be an ideal signing from the perspective of the board. It would allow them to slip a few more out the exit door while everybody's attention is focused on our latest 'superstar' signing. After a clearly past it Wayne Rooney. I don't expect a net spend of more than 20 to 30 million come the close of the window myself. Maybe less.

That said, as Koeman doesn't appear to have a clue as far as the players he's bringing in or the approach on the pitch, who really gives a fuck anyway? Here's to champions of 7th place again and maybe the 4th round of one of the cup competitions. Happy days.

Just checked updates from that Spanish twitter account cited in the above story.

The latest tweet says: "intimate friend of Diego has confirmed to me that Costa has signed for Atletico, and will go to Everton until January (only)."

How real this guy is I do not know. Many outlets claim he is close to the club (Atletico).

We keep him ticking over, pay his wages, he won't be cup tied for the 'Champs league', makes sense all round. Only problem would be his fitness, can't see him doing to much training in Rio, or wherever his partying is taking place, if rumours are to be true.

£41m to Atletico with him coming to us on a 6 month loan is the latest from the Spanish guy on Twitter. Could equally be bollocks of course.

You can register for 3 clubs in any one season July to June but only play for 2.

Chelsea hold his registration, but he hasn't played for them.

If he comes to Everton that's his 2nd registration, but 1st team to play for.

Come January he can go to Atletico and register for his 3rd registration and play for them.

That's my understanding.

Nicky Shorey got away with it several years ago when he was a Villa player. He went out on an 'emergency loan' to Forest for 9 games and later in the season transferred to Fulham. The FA/Premier League got around it, by claiming emergency loans didn't count. Which in turn further soured the relationship with FIFA.

Looking at the odds for strikers likely to join us, Costa is the shortest price at 1/2. It seems this thread is getting the least amount of interest on TW, but to my mind this is THE deal that matters!

Costa is class, and if we get half a season out of him, albeit not match fit initially, he could still play around 18 games for us before he goes to Atletico so it's a no-brainer for me.

If the Atletico deal doesn't happen, then what for Costa? He is simply NOT going to sit on his arse doing nothing for a year, and will never play for Chelsea again so what are his options? They loan him to us for a year, he can't play against Chelsea, then in a year they sell him to Madrid? There are more definitely some twists & turns in this one before the end of the window, and I'd be fucking made up if he signed for us, long or short deal.

Is it too simplistic to think that there must be good value, quality strikers in German/Italian mid to high ranking teams who would have their head turned by a bumper contract with Everton?
