Everton will step up their long-held interest in signing Sheffield Wednesday striker George Hirst as David Henen looks to be leaving the club as a free agent.

The Blues have been linked with 19-year-old Hirst for the past 18 months or so and failed with a bid to sign him for around £1m in January last year.

Since then, Hirst has made his senior debut for the Owls but remains one of the most promising young strikers on the Blues' radar. Son of former Wednesday goalscorer David Hirst, George has been progressing through England's youth ranks averaging a goal every two games from U16 to U20 level.

Henen, meanwhile, looks to have said his goodbyes to his Everton U23 team-mates and bade Everton farewell judging by his latest tweet.

In it he thanked the club for everything after almost four years at Finch Farm. His contract, which expires this summer, has not been renewed and he is free to join a new club, with a few French outfits said to be interested over the past 12 months.
