Carvalho to be allowed to leave Sporting
It's part of the latest fallout from the harrowing incident last month in which the Sporting team was attacked at their training ground by a group of supporters.
Goalkeeper Rui Patricio quit the club today, blaming controversial president Bruno de Carvalho for inciting “psychological violence” against the players and anger among supporters.
While it has been claimed by Portuguese newspaper, Record, that William Carvalho handed in a written request that his contract also be terminated, the club have denied that that is the case.
Carvalho, a Euro 2016 winner with Portugal, is apparently free to leave Sporting if a suitable deal can be done with another club, albeit most likely for around £10m less than the £35m being bandied about in recent media reports.
The 26-year-old's links with Everton go back to before the last European Championships but they have been strengthened recently by the imminent — and now confirmed — appointment of his compatriot, Marco Silva, to the manager's job at Goodison Park.
Silva managed the defensive midfielder at Està¡dio José Alvalade in 2014-15, leading the Lions to the Portuguese cup.
