Middlesbrough U21s 2 - 2 Everton U21s

Everton U21s travel to Teeside tonight to take on Middlesbrough in their second game of the new Premier League 2 season: kick-off at 7 pm.

A substantial number of U21 players listed by the club did not participate in last week's heavy defeat by Liverpool, which saw a relatively young squad put to the sword. It is possible that a number of these are being lined up for loan moves that will further deplete the resources available to Paul Tait.

Chelsea triallist Malik Mothersille is once again in the squad but only starts on the bench again after coming on as a sub in the mini-derby to defeat to Liverpool on Monday evening.

After going behind to two goals in the first half, Everton fought to get back into the match, pulling a goal back when Metcalfe found Okoronkwo who glanced home his header.

Mothersille replaced Jack Butler before Mackenzie Hunt equalized for Everton in added time.

Everton: Barrett, Dixon, Hunt, Astley, Moonan, Metcalfe, Djankpata [Y:56'] (58' Heath), Apter [Y:23'], Okoronkwo, Kouyate, Butler (74' Mothersille).

Subs not Used: Graham, O Samuels-Smith, J Patterson.

I'm still puzzled what has happened to a lot of the regular U21s from last season? I know some of them are injured… but surely not all of them?

These are the players who I think are still on the books but have played no part in the two games played so far:

Sean McAllister – injured
Kyle John – injured?
Charlie Whitaker – injured?
Mathew Mallon
Luke Butterfield – injured?
Eli Campbell
Ed Jones
Jack Tierney
Liam Higgins *
Charlie Wilson *
Harry Wright *

That's a whole team! Although the last three I think may have departed earlier in the summer. And I'm excluding the obvious ones who appear to have progressed along that perilous path to the first team:

Billy Crellin
Tom Cannon
Lewis Dobbin
Tyler Onyango

We do have five young players out on loan so far:

Zan-Luk Leban
Harry Tryer
Reece Welch
Stan Mills
Lewis Warrington

I guess more may be destined for the loan pathway in the next 2 weeks…

A bit more scratching around shows that I should have included Liam Higgins in that second group as he signed a new contract back in May and featured in a couple of the pre-season games.

Harry Wright left in June after his contract expired:

"Fleetwood Town have also announced the signing of Harry Wright after he left Everton following the end of his contract. The Blues confirmed in June that the full-back would leave the club once his deal expired.

The Cods say they beat off a host of EFL clubs for the 18-year-old's signature. Wright, who has signed a one-year deal at Highbury, will join up with Matthew Lawlor's Development Squad after featuring on 34 occasions for the Blues during his two-year scholarship."

And Charlie Wilson is showing on Norwich City's books, so he's also a goner. TransferMarkt list him as joining Norwich on a free transfer in July, but some betting sites show he played for them at the end of last season, presumably on trial?
