In a week’s time, on September 1, the summer transfer window will slam shut (it always has to slam shut, it can never just close gradually).

And while Everton have addressed some of their needs, they are still lacking in some key areas, and they still have plenty of work to do.

Angus Kinnear claimed 70% of the Premier League’s deals get done in the final week of the transfer window. I’m not particularly sure on the accuracy of his claim, but it will certainly be a busy time for lots of clubs.

Everton need to be busy too, so with a week to go, here’s what still needs to happen.

BUY A RIGHT-BACK

This can’t get any more obvious. It’s already dragged on far too long — Kinnear can dress it up how he likes, it’s a failure that a right-back is not already through the door.

David Moyes, in his post-match press conference after the win over Crystal Palace, said Everton want to ensure they get a quality option in that position, but it simply should not have taken so long.

They cannot allow this situation to drag on into deadline day, either. Kinnear has said a right-back will come in, and the club must get it done.

MOVE ON SOME FRINGE PLAYERS

Tim Iroegbunam seemed as if he could be on his way to Hull City, but the Tigers are keen to structure a deal heavily in their favour, and have used a minor injury to the midfielder to support that negotiation target.

Everton are open to moving Iroegbunam on for the right fee, and the correct structure of a deal, and I still see this as one that’s likely to get done, whether it’s to Hull or another team.

Carlos Alcaraz is also up for grabs. I like Charly, he’s got plenty of talent and drive, but Moyes just does not seem to trust him. There has, however, been a significant lack of interest in the playmaker so far, but I would not be at all surprised if a loan move, perhaps with an obligation or option to buy, comes to fruition late in the day.

Nathan Patterson simply must be sold. I don’t know what Everton are waiting for. Moyes isn’t going to play him, so what’s the point? Let the lad move on.

That trio are the main fringe players who could move on without impacting the squad too much.

LOAN OUT AZNOU

Adam Aznou was a notable absentee from Everton’s squad against Palace. No reason was given for his absence, either.

It’s a huge shame, as Aznou has impressed in pre-season and, in my book, should have made the bench ahead of Patterson, given the Scot is so clearly up for sale.

But it goes to prove the point that Aznou, right now, is not seen as ready for Premier League football, fairly or unfairly.

And if he isn’t going to get some minutes, then he needs to be out on loan and playing regularly, which means Everton making a call and getting a temporary switch sorted in the coming days.

They’ll then need to go and bolster their left-back options, but that needs to happen anyway, as this should be Vitaliy Mykolenko’s final season at the club.

SHIFT BETO IF POSSIBLE

Beto will never get any criticism from me for his effort or endeavour, or his desire to do well for Everton.

However, he is 28 and has just a year left on his deal, though Everton do reportedly hold an option to extend his contract by a further season.

But really, Everton should be looking to cash in on Beto now, and that could open the door to bring in a forward who actually plays like they have the experience of a 28- or 29-year-old, which Beto simply does not do more often than not.

Beto is a good finisher and between February and May, he seems to turn into a different beast, but his all-round game is lacking and that can really hamper Everton’s build-up play.

If a good offer comes in, say in the £17-20M region, then Everton should cash in, albeit they will have to ensure a quality replacement is lined up.

MAKE A CALL ON GREALISH AND NDIAYE

I’m of the view that if Jack Grealish is to come back, then it will not necessarily mean that Iliman Ndiaye leaves the club.

However, if Ndiaye is to leave, then let’s put it this way — I don’t see another winger coming in on top of Grealish.

Grealish featured as Manchester City came from 1-0 down to beat Bournemouth 2-1 on Sunday, but the feeling is he is still very much up for grabs.

Perhaps City will change their tune, but if Everton want him, which they clearly do, at least on loan, then the deal is probably there to be done right up until the end.

I’d be all for Grealish coming back, but the points about a potential move then blocking the pathway of Tyrique George or Tyler Dibling are fair.

If it is a case of Ndiaye out, Grealish in, then there would be no pathways being blocked, because really, George and Dibling should not be starting every game anyway.

But, losing Ndiaye at this point would seem a bit of a sickener, especially to a Premier League rival, which would likely be the case.

City have been credited with interest, and you’d imagine Ndiaye’s name may be brought up in relation to talks over Grealish, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also fans of the Senegal international. Aston Villa, too, could be ones to watch, albeit the same could be said when it comes to Grealish.

What Everton must do when it comes to Ndiaye is set a clear deadline and a high benchmark.

As Moyes has said, it would take an “outrageous” offer for Everton to come to the table. Well, Kinnear and Co. must make sure that it really is an outrageous fee — nothing less than £70M should be considered at this stage of the summer.

What are you thinking with that clear deadline with regard to Ndiaye, Patric? What would be your cutoff, mate?

He is our best player, a player who could definitely be a match-winner if we are going to try and compete and win a trophy this season.

If we loan out Aznou that gives us even less cover at LB than we have now.

Tony, whilst Ndiaye is undoubtedly our most skillful player (IMO, Jordan Pickford is our best player), do you think he has what it takes to move to one of the big clubs? The two chances he made too easy for Henderson on Saturday tell me he's at his level right now.

Patric... you state: "Everton need to be busy too, so with a week to go, here's what still needs to happen."

Is that "your" opinion or the opinion of the club? Because what happens at Everton is a riddle, wrapped up in a mystery, inside an enigma. [To quote Churchill.]

I wouldn't be surprised if nothing happened and I wouldn't be surprised if we signed 3 world class left-backs all at once.\

Me... I'm at a total loss and quite frankly don't care anymore.

You say Everton need to add principally a right-back, then given we already have a thin squad, you have us loaning out Aznou (our only left-back cover) and selling Alcaraz, Beto, Patterson and Iroegbunam. A further 5 going out then?

Plus possibly Ndiaye…

I think in an ideal world we should move on some of these players (not Ndiaye) but we have to have a squad and, as things stand, everyone we have been linked with is going somewhere else.

I'm all for exacting value, but at the expense of missing targets, it can be a bit foolhardy.

Such a high bar with regards those chances, Andrew, but I would find it intriguing watching Ndiaye playing for a team who manipulated the ball.

Pickford is a great shot-stopper, I'm not sure his overall game is completely A-Grade though, but like Ndiaye, he's another player that I look at and think to myself “We have definitely got enough good players to try and compete in the cups."
Andrew Ellams
7 Posted 25/08/2026 at 12:36:43
None of our players are completely A grade, Tony. Hence we are where we are.

With Ndiaye, I just feel he lacks a little bit of end product to play for a team at the top of the league.

I just can't read my more of our transfer reports.

1. We know we need a right-back. Then there are reports we have shown interest in a particular right-back. We have been “interested” in about 8 right-backs. Just go choose one and sign one. Any one. We don't have a right-back.

2. I'm not sure Grealish is needed. George was beating defenders with his pace on the weekend. Grealish slows the whole movement down.

3. Why Aznou would be loaned out is beyond me. In my opinion, he should start at left-back.

4. Ndiaye shouldn't be sold... full stop. He has a contract. We need him to get to Europe.

5. We need another centre-back, and a midfielder.

6. Most importantly, we need a striker. If not, we'll be the team that has the least goals scored against us, and the least goals for. We have to score goals and so we need a proper striker. Come on!

I said it would intrigue me watching him play for one of the best teams Andrew, but I would much prefer to see him stay though mate.

It was only one game but if we can get a fullback, a forward and another central defender, especially if O’Brien leaves, then I genuinely believe we could beat any team on our day, so hopefully we get a few surprises in the final week of this transfer window🤞

1# Tony

I think for a deadline it would seriously have to be close of play Friday, and any offer would now have to be £70m+ add ons.

I guess the thing is, Everton technically don't need to spend the money on a replacement as such, if we go off the basis that Grealish would be a likely replacement should he return.

But it would make little sense to suddenly have £80m to play with on deadline day, and not spend it.

Sorry to hear that.

I appreciate that we are treading over the same ground but we do try to mix up our reporting and features as much as possible.

Ultimately it's the transfer window, and the final week of it, and ins and outs will dominate the agenda.

Hopefully there'll be enough coming up with the Preston and Bournemouth matches that we can mix things up even more!

If Aznou is loaned out some championship team will have one cracking young player in their side.
But personally I think he’s more a wing back than a full back and we can’t play that system, especially if JoB goes.
Andrew Merrick
14 Posted 25/08/2026 at 13:59:21
There is a possible scenario for a back 3, it depends on the choice of full backs, and this managers willingness to change.
Rohl and Aznou could make decent wing backs given time in that role, but neither should be first choice in our back four.
So the need for new fullbacks remains as strong as ever, as does a true goal scoring finisher.
Mark Murphy
15 Posted 25/08/2026 at 14:04:09
I know Andrew, but the only back three we have that would work includes JoB and Branthwaite and I personally think we’d need an upgrade on Tarks to go with them.
It also means taking one out of midfield and bringing George and Ndiaye inside rather than wings.
I’m not sure we could adapt to that style.
Mike Allison

Normally I love a ‘football manager’ style thread, but Moyes’ tactics and team selections, plus the signing of Norgaard mean that half the job is trying to guess what Moyes wants as opposed to what makes sense.

Given Moyes just won’t play him, Patterson should be sold. That really means we need 2 right backs, not 1 - unless we’re just going to say that Röhl is the second RB option.

Iroegbunam has a good chance of developing into a physically dominant Premier League midfielder. I’d much rather use him than Norgaard, so do we give up and sell him? Do we loan him? Norgaard has 2 years, tops, by which time Iroegbunam will be a much better option.

Likewise, Alcaraz is a good player and needs to play. In some circumstances, Dewsbury-Hall should be alongside Garner with Alcaraz behind the striker.

We don’t need to sell anyone, Aznou should be in the squad every game and an option as an attacking substitution if we’re chasing a goal.

Moyes’ failure to use players, and especially use substitutes well, makes it not totally clear what we ‘should’ do.

The only thing we ‘need’ is a right back, but every other position except central midfield could be improved. O’Brien and Branthwaite should be the centre backs and we need at least one new one, probably two, at some point in the next 12 months.
Mike Allison
17 Posted 25/08/2026 at 15:13:58
Andrew we’d need about 3-4 new centre backs to play a back 3. It’s not really an option unless we’re going to play full backs or midfielders in that back 3.
Brian Harrison

Kinnear in his interviews a couple of days ago assured us that we would have a new right back before the window closed, well Angus the clock is ticking. Also despite Moyes being keen on Delap it looks like he is destined to be at Forest who are rumoured to tying up the deal. I think we need to buy a striker before we sell Beto, otherwise we would be left with Barry as our only striking option unless he converts Jonson or George and I cant see Moyes doing that. On X over the weekend although he only played for a short time the City fans were saying just get Grealish to Everton. Despite him having an impact last season the age and the salary he would want for me makes it a non starter.
I am sure Dibbling and Johnson will get a run out tomorrow and probably Keane or O,Brien will start in defence, also I would imagine Beto gets a start.

It really is hard to believe that the fullback and striker that were needed last season and probably more so this season, with days left neither position has been filled. The problem when you leave everything so late you end up with 3rd or 4th choices for those positions.

Brian #18 spot on,
We cant score enough from open play and we leak too many goals.

2 quality full backs and a "proper" goalscorer who can also control the ball has been a glaring need for too long now.

There are no excuses Angus. Just get it done. At 3m a place and the chance of Europe and a cup its a no brainer. Pay the money and get them in.

Munoz as a possible RB?Not for me, George skinned him on Saturday.
Norton-Cuffy? All seems to have gone quiet on that front!
No doubt we’ll end up with Johnston if we can get his wheelchair through the door!
Delap looking like a done deal at Forest although talk is of a loan agreement.Fair enough,he’s not worth £40M in my opinion.
Ndiaye is going nowhere. Can’t see any potential CL club paying north of £70M for him.I agree with Andrew@2&7 above.
Grealish may still happen but only if the sums are right for us.
He is better than anything we have got and you can’t have enough skilful players in the squad.
Seems to be some interest in Beto from Italy,I’d let him go given his contract circumstances
Regards moving on Patterson,Alcaraz etc easy to say but the reality is nobody wants them.
Jake O’Brien moving on seems unlikely to me. I’m not convinced he is a great centre back but we cannot afford to be without cover in this area.
I’d be looking at Jackson from Chelsea on loan if possible, but wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t sign anyone this week!!
Still that’s the Everton way,
Christy Ring

To be honest, it’s a total farce, heading into the last week of the window, still searching for a full back, and hoping we can get in a striker and then offload Beto. I sincerely hope that Ndiaye stays, Grealish is definitely not a replacement, and why would Moyes be so pigheaded to sell O’Brien and cause more problems.

Don't wish injuries on any player, however, the injury sustained by Alistair Johnston the Celtic RB has hopefully ended the nonsense of any interest in him.

In my opinion, we don't have the money for new players. We probably need to sell first. But we need Jake O'Brien for the future!

As for Grealish: AC Milan is interested in him. I don't think he's coming back. With the transfer window about to close, we're missing a right-back and a striker. Plus, potentially a left-back if Aznou leaves.

We've signed three midfielders. I just don't get it.

Really these positions should have been filled much earlier in the window.

If Ndiaye goes, I won't be attending a game this season. He's the only match winner we have.

It's a disgrace no right-back has been signed. Although Rohl has done a quality job there, to be fair. We need more.

Not signing a striker and relying on a donkey like Beto and a fumbler like Barry is also unforgivable.

Delap deal to Forest now finalised. That looks like our No 1 striking target gone west in the final week of the window.

If we end up spending over £20M to bring back Richarlison, that is going to feel quite underwhelming.

If he still possesses enough hunger for the game, then I'd much prefer Jesus, Kevin.

Agree, Mike, I'd sooner be underwhelmed with Richarlison than pay that amount of money for Delap.

If we are going to improve. we have definitely got to get rid of Beto and bring in another centre-forward, along with that right-back that our Angus has promised us!
Christy Ring

Kevin #28,

I'd say Forest blew us out of the water, £45M + £5M add-ons, we probably offered £15M, which is our figure for every signing this season.

I will say he's definitely not worth it, 2 goals in 41 games and they make a £20M profit in one season. I'd take Jesus, but could we afford his wages?

I seem to be at loggerheads with the Club's Transfer Policy. If I understand it properly:

1. I don't agree we should get rid of Jake O'Brien.
2. I think Aznou should get more game time.
3. I don't want Grealish.
4. I didn't want Delap\.
5. I don't want Richarlison back.
6. I want to keep Ndiaye, but if he goes, he goes for no less than £80M.

And that's only for starters!!!

Tony, I would not support selling Beto even if we bring in another striker.

Another season. Another failure. Another shameful embarrassing transfer window. A CEO who looks like a cheap rug. A manager at odds with the hierarchy and a good number of what players we have in an inadequate depleted squad.

We are crying out for some decent players to bolster the new additions. Just a couple more would be a major improvement. We aren't hamstrung by rules and regulations. How can it be so fucked up?

Oh I know... It's Everton.

Forest have had their pants pulled down by Chelsea over Delap. On one deal for a failed striker, they have made enough profit to comfortably pay their fine for years of cheating.

The only silver lining is that it priced us out of the picture.

Robert 32 I agree on all points except Delap, I haven't read this thread but many on here don't seem to rate him. Personally I think he would have thrived here and resurrected his career. I\\\\m from Ipswich originally and saw him play a few times, kept a close eye on him as I liked what I saw. Strong, powerful and a direct runner, he is far more than the thug that many on here seem to deem him. He is better than our two put together, he just struggled to adapt there, agree with others that £45M is too much. Not sure where that leaves us in our striker search? Jesus? No way is he a Moyes player.

I just don't get the reason for the apparent lack of a coherent plan as to transfers as it seems like a shotgun approach. For instance, being linked to any number of right-backs while other clubs seem to move on signing specific targets.

Maybe you all on this thread can help educate me because I don't know where the disconnect is, I just know it's apparent. Is it Moyes vs Kinnear? Owners (ie, $$$$s) vs Moyes and/or Kinnear?

If funds are tight, why did we spend on Norgaard when everyone knows we need a right-back? Did Moyes push for him? Are we still in bad financial straits or are owners cheap?

Lots of questions, I know, but I guess all of us fans of the club are looking for some answers. Thanks for letting me share my confusion.

I had genuinely thought that putting together an expensively assembled ace recruitment team and the dosh invested in crack diagnostics was precisely to put an end to the need we have had for so long to go shopping - somewhat desperately - in the last week/day of the window,

Silly me, I thought that we would now be doing some relatively long-term planning and research over the near year since the middle of September 2025, that we would be isolating and selecting targets based on super recruiting and diagnostics. It could well be us, I thought, who would unearth a couple of gems on the cheap from South America or in the lower half of some European league. I dared to dream: we might be Brighton, Bournemouth, or Brentford.

And here we are, 71 days since the window opened, and we have not bought a single player who was not already based in England. No one from over the channel, sea, or water. As I have said before, we at Everton do not do water.

Not one of the five deals that we have made had needed to involve any ace recruitment or crack diagnostics at all. Not one of them. Mr Hammond climbed into his Ford Anglia and chug-chugged all the way to Middlesborough. Phew, that Norgaard deal involved some wonderwall recruting and diagnostics.

What exactly have this expensively assembled recruitment team achieved so far? What stunning creative signing have we made of the sort we have come to associate with say Bournemouth?

So here we are again once more, scrambling in the last week for a couple of loans and a Delap type (although thank Sheedy he is now somewhere else).

Where is the right-back that we so sorely need, a left-back, a centre-half, a centre-forward? 163 hours to go until the window slams shut. 163. People can no longer say be 'patient' it's still only mid-July, late-July, early-August. I am sick and tired of being told to be 'patient', not least by people with zero knowledge of what is going on behind closed doors, apart from, apparently, Moyes is bickering with everyone else. Sounds great and just what we need right?

If we end up with a couple of late loans and a Norgaard type buy, then this window, in my opinion, will have been at best dryly mediocre and at worst a failure. Is this what our ace recruiters and diagnostics have given us this window?

Is this what you meant, Saint Angus-soon to-be-silent-again, when you told us that we would see 'Part B' in operation this summer window? Permit me to call you a bit of a charlatan who thinks that we -- us, the fans -- are dumb enough to accept your twisted and porous words that are not worth the keyboard secretary Doris typed them up for you on.

What is 'Plan B'? Are we living through it now? What is it? Define and describe it? And, while you're at it, what the fuck was Plan A? And I can't wait for the next time you speak to grateful us in December when you dampen expectations for the January window and announce the implementation of Plan C in summer 2027.

Where is the financial backing, Saint Daniel-the-Absent? Why, unlike Roma, did high-ranking TFG officials not come to Liverpool (it's on the north-west coast, Dan lad, next to Leicester, but, alas, it's 385 km from Turnberry, clearly a bridge too far for you) to have high-level recruitment meetings?

A squalid summer so far. Three players who were not with us at the end of last season and one of them fell in our lap and took zilch recruitment.

The only Premier League team, I believe, not to have bought someone from over the channel, sea, and ocean (No, Rohl doesn't count).

Everton don't do water.

It's beginning to look like we have no money and we are waiting for big offers to come in for our star player(s).

I can't believe that we are looking to sell O'Brien. If they let Ndiaye go, we know our owners are in it purely for the money and not for building a winning team.

The noise regarding possible outgoings and lack of possible incomings kind of smacks of issues in the changing room.

Has Moyes got issues and are we going to see an uninspired, under-performing Everton to force the owners into taking action?

I sincerely hope that the words of Angus Kinnear come to fruition but I can't help thinking he is already working on his next interview to say how hard we tried but, due to x, y and z, we couldn't get a deal over the line for a right-back and striker that we need so much.

Apologies to the fans, owners committed, much improved squad due to deals done... I look forward to being proved wrong.

Watching one of the fans podcasts yesterday and one of the lads said he's heard Moyes wants at least 5 players in before the window closes.

Now given that it's taken this so-called transfer committee about 25 years to get a right-back in, I'd say that's wishful thinking from Moyes.

There's something about that Kinnear that sticks in my craw, as I find him quite smug, 70% of our business etc. I'll be shocked if we even get 2 in never mind 5... and I'll guarantee there won't be a right-back.

The window closes on Monday night, I think, so Angus, you'd better get moving.

Celtic knocked out, youd expect Johnston to come on a cheap fee. Cant be enthused by that.

It/s funny how people think we're going up the top of the league but that's not happening, so calm down.

We won 2-0 Saturday and suddenly you're all saying "Buy this, buy that" -- well these things cost big money and we don't spend big money, simple.

For example, Jackson £70M, Delap £45M -- do you believe they're twice as good as Barry and Beto? I don't think so... but we will have to wait till the end of the season for the result of that one.

Everton are building slowly and have picked a few good players up for not so much money (Hackney, Rhol, George, Johnson, and Norgard). Surely that makes us much stronger than last season with Dad's Army recruits, Coleman, Gana and McNiel going finally.

The age of the squad is very young. so that's promising. Only Tarkowski, Keane and Norgaard are over 30. No doubt they could be replaced next season -- Tarkowski and Keane owe Everton nothing.

So let's not panic and hope TFG can pull in 2 quality players and we will be Top 8 easily, I have no doubt. Let's go and enjoy Preston tonight.

Andrew @50,

According to Mike Gaynes at the end of last season, Kinnear had plenty. He was adamant this was the case and we could look forward to a summer window.

Despite my observations from comments this False Idol CEO had disguised, hinting at a frugal spend. Some count the permanent signings of George and Rohl as new. They are not. They were with our squad last season.

I think Christy points out we always start by offering a ridiculous £15M first bid for players who we would demand more than double that for if they were ours. Then invariably and unsurprisingly other clubs come in and pay the asking price.

Seems we cannot move on from the previous decades of shabby and insulting transfer dealing that this new lot were supposed to put an end to. My cautious optimism of them from the start of their tenure has been swiftly eroded.

Martin.

Everton Football Club are the owners of the driest powder in the UK. We've been keeping it dry for 3 windows now....

I don't think it's a lack of money but more about why spend big.

Looking at what has happened to Villa and Newcastle after they dared to challenge the status quo is probably a warning to all owners outside the Super League 6.

Not often I say this but... What PG said! (@ 49).

I'm fairly sure we'll get a couple in on deadline day but they'll be whoever is left when other clubs have made their moves. Not carefully identified and selected pieces of a genius masterplan.

Paul, yes, indeed. I thought he was a total bullshitter right from the off.

I remember his 'world class recruitment' shite a year ago which just felt like unearned self-praise -- he appointed them all after all.

But it was actually when he went on to say about Moyes 'and we like to think we have a world class manager'. I realised he was just full of piss and wind.

Not even Davy's Mum would describe him that way, so why say it? You say it, if you're just bullshitting all day long, and you forget what's true and what isn't.

What I think we need to progress is starting right-back, left-back and centre-back (ideally one who can play left or right) along with a striker. On that basis, we can afford to lose one of Tarkowski or Keane, plus Iroegbunam, Patterson and Aznou out on loan.

What I think we will get is Nidiaye replaced by Grealish and a right-back but possibly not of starter quality. Even Kinnear knows he must sign somebody in that position; otherwise, his reputation is shredded, so someone will come in and be announced as the solution.

With this, we'll get another midtable finish. For all the talk, I think this suits the owners fine. I hope I'm wrong.

Given increasing rumours of N'Diaye to City, my fantasy football end of transfer window goes like this:

OUT
Ndiaye — £80m+
O'Brien — potentially another £15–20m
Iroegbunam — £15m
Patterson — £10m
Alcaraz - £20m
IN
Rico Lewis — RB/CM as part of the N'Diaye deal
Guéla Doué — RB
Gabriel Jesus — CF/attacker
Assane Diao — attacker
Jack Grealish — improved loan
??? — A young central defender

That's not too much to ask is it, has anyone got the phone number for the transfer committee?

Seems we are now being linked with Sunderland right back Trai Hume and the Sunderland supporters are not happy. Be a strange one if he ditched them now with a European campaign coming up.
