The advice I was given at the start of my career about the need to create stability at the top was to think of a pyramid. When the top stone goes on, there are cheers and celebrations; but in reality, the congratulations should go to the architects who designed the base that provided the top brick to be put in place, meaning you need a solid base to build on.
In running a football club, the architect has to be the owner, who has to provide a solid base, to provide his vision for the future, and not just financially. This has been a problem with Everton FC for a number of years now, with poor ownership allowing incompetent people to try and reach the next level… failing, and leaving one of the founders of both the Football League and the Premier League, and one of the most loyally supported clubs, in a precarious position.
The interest now is what will the new owners bring? Will they start with a new Board of Directors, leading up to a new visionary progressive management team? Or will they continue with the present organization until safety in the Premier League is secured?
The only way we can celebrate putting that final stone in place is with competent ownership, and with their experience in business dealings the Friedkin Group appear competent enough, but running a football club – especially a club with the history of Everton – is far from an easy standard business dealing.
