A man has tragically died following an incident at the construction site of Everton’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock today it has now been confirmed.
Workers at the site were asked to leave following what was described as a ‘major incident’ that saw 26-year-old Michael Jones, a lifelong Evertonian from Kirkby, taken to Aintree hospital where it appears he succumbed to serious head injuries.
A report in the Liverpool Echo said that construction workers were informed of an incident and then asked to leave the site when police and “scientific support vehicles” arrived at the entrance to the site, but could not initially share further details.
However, it has since been revealed that the incident, that took place around lunchtime this afternoon, involved a piece of “heavy machinery”. Work at the site has been suspended until further notice.
“We can confirm that a man has died following an incident at Bramley Moore Dock this afternoon, Monday 14 August,” read a statement from Merseyside Police. “At around 1pm it was reported that a 26-year-old man had been injured and emergency services attended the scene.
“The man was taken to hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead. His next of kin have been informed. Officers remain at the scene as we continue with the early stages of the investigation alongside the Health and Safety Executive.”
