Crunch Time
25 June 2005

At this time of year, transfer speculation is rife, and Everton Football Club are once again being linked with every Tom, Dick & Harry.  I am one of these people who has a bit of a laugh each day looking at all the speculation that we seem to attract season after season.  It's not all bad though; the Simon Davies rumour has been bounced around for months, and hey presto, he is now officially an Everton player, and a quality one at that!  I have no doubts that some of the current rumours doing the rounds will become fact over the next few weeks, but you have to have a chuckle at a few of them......Edgar Davids??? Luis Figo??? Raul?? Forssell?? Parker?? Emre?? Bellamy??... the list is endless.

Many people are calling us a failure in the transfer market because we seem to show plenty of interest in players, yet actual signings seem to rarely materialise.  Let's be honest though, if we were to sign everyone we were linked with we would be called Chelsea!  Don't get too disheartened when we fail to sign all of these big-name players.  Big-name players are not a quick route to success: Drogba, Veron, Kezman, Crespo, value for money?  I think not!  Tim Cahill and Marcus Bent on the other hand were superb acquisitions for us.  I feel that, if Moysey is as shrewd in the market this time around, it will be difficult for us to fail.

David Moyes has nothing but the long-term future of this club on his mind.  Every single aspect of his approach to managing our club has one goal - to bridge the gap between us and the "Bg Three".  I, like most other fans, can appreciate what he is trying to do and realise that it will take time, and a great deal of effort and hard work to achieve this.  But Moysey can only do so much on his own.  He can only look after the footballing side of things, whilst the backroom staff and boardroom should take care of the rest.  In recent years it's been the latter part of this partnership that has let Everton down, but I finally feel that we have all of Everton's employees singing off the same song sheet.

Moyes is refusing to spend big money on signing "big" players, especially when all they are after is as much money as possible.  Scott Parker and Belozoglu Emre going to Newcastle doesn't disappoint me one bit, because it only for the money, and if somebody would rather collect £55k/wk instead of £40k/wk but be happy with mid-table mediocrity without European competition, do you think they lack desire, ambition and commitment?  We will be better off without them!  Let's face it, Newcastle are falling apart at the seams; they aren't in Europe and they are run by a power-crazed idiot who cant even stop his own players from fighting!  I know which club I would choose...

Moysey will undoubtedly bring in some class signings eventually, and has already retained the services of most of the players that made a difference last season.  Remember how you've felt over the last couple of weeks with all the speculation surrounding our out of contract players?  We didn't need to worry because Moysey has sorted it, and I have a firm belief that will come up trumps again before the start of next campaign.

I know this is a very optimistic point of view, but hey, we're not all miserable bastards.....
