The beautiful game?
2 May 2006

Ive been following the debate about Rooney for the last couple of days with great interest and it is confirmed a suspicion Ive had for quite a while now and that is: a very large number of so-called football fans care little for football as a spectacle they are too busy wrapping themselves in their own petty inadequacies. They express their failings in witless parochialism and their gutless revelling in other peoples misfortunes. (And I say that in reference to them as people and football fans in general and not as fellow Evertonians.)

To me, Rooney is the best English player of his generation and I feel gut-wrenchingly deprived that I wont be allowed to appreciate his silky skills at the coming World Cup. Dont get me wrong; my loyalties are Football, Everton, England and in that order. England without Rooney is the equivalent of Brazil 1970 without Pele, Argentina 1982 without Maradona, France 1998 without Zidane... I feel as if my life has been enriched with the experience of watching these master exponents of beautiful football at thier respective tournaments and Im crushed beyond belief that 2006 Germany will be without Rooney. I love Everton but I love beautiful football more, wherever it is played.

A few comments on what Ive read so far in no particular order:

1. Mick Wrende: 'The fact that Rooney looked only to himself is what everyone hates about him especially as he left us when we needed him most typical of the dreadful decline in our current society'

So Mike, when Alex Young left Hearts for Everton he did it for love of our club and he wasnt looking out for himself or his family? When Bob Latchford left Birmingham? Trevor Steven left Burnley? Peter Reid left Bolton? etc etc etc

2. Gavin Ramejkis: 'the matter to hand is simply a dirty footballer getting their just deserts'

Right Gavin, when Cahill breaks his leg after one sly ankle tap too many youll be overwhelmed with joy and positively glowing with a sense of justice having been done? Ill bet Oh, and the council quip 'we may have been born in the gutter (mate), but some of us are looking up to the stars'

3.Tony Marsh. I pity you I really do Your opinions on just about anything reveal to me that you are incapable of finding a vestige of enjoyment in anything other than your own persecution complex; you keep decrying the dearth of good football at Everton FC judging by your incessantly negative posts and your infatuation with parochialism, you wouldnt know good football if you fell over it and if you accidentally did you wouldnt appreciate it. You encapsulate your postage stamp sized encyclopaedic knowledge of football with one phrase you use about Rooney: 'No class'.

That lad has more footballing class lying under his finger nails than you and your ilk could possibly achieve in a 1000 years, grow up for fucks sake and try a bit of rationality instead of this constant diet of bile.

Shite, Tony, I hated the fact that Rooney left Everton and I really do think that if hed have come onto the scene in 1992 and not 2002, hed have had a good 5-10 years out of him at the club. We were skint, we needed the money, he was an asset, he was sold end of.

Finally, Id just like to express my good wishes to Wayne Rooney on his recovery and I look forward to enjoying watching your sublime skills next season just wish it was for us.
