Dithering Idiot, Maybe?
26 May 2006

Like most Evertonians, I read lots of articles on many of the websites, some I agree with, others I do not. I also find my views change on some very important matters from day to day. So, does this make me a dithering idiot who cannot form his own opinions? Yes... no... maybe.

Do we need a new striker or two at the club? Yes of course, no dithering there. Who is available? Will they come to Goodison? Will they fit in? Can we afford them? Lots of things to dither on but all point to one thing, THE MONEY.

Do we need a new stadium? Maybe, what about renovating Goodison? Would a new stadium be in the city limits? What will it cost? Can we afford it? Again lots to dither on but all require THE MONEY.

Are the current playing staff of the right quality? Some yes, some maybe and too many no! Where do we need to strengthen? Goalkeeper, defence, midfield or strikers? Probably all of them but who? Where from? Will they want to come to Everton? Will we be outbid by other Northwest giants like Wigan and Bolton? There is weeks and weeks worth of dithering here but we will definitely need THE MONEY.

Is David Moyes the right man for the job? Yes, no, maybe. But who would we get to replace him? Would they want to come to Goodison? Would they have the same financial constraints? One thing is for sure a new manager would need THE MONEY.

Is Bill Kenwright the right man to be running the club? Yes, he is one of us he loves the club. No, we are going nowhere fast and regarded as a club alongside Wigan and Charlton. Maybe, what if he gets us some much needed investment through his vast business network? One thing is certain he has NOT GOT THE MONEY.

Confusing, isn’t it? However, the summary is pretty obvious: everything we would all like for Everton costs MONEY... and we have NO MONEY.

As Evertonians, how do we console ourselves then? Personally I remember the glorious times of the mid 80’s and constantly tell my 19-year-old son about the Bayern game, Rotterdam, championships, cup finals, that we did once have full backs and goal scorers. Do you know what really worries me more than THE MONEY? What is my son going to tell his son about Everton?

We need Blue Bill and the Everton board to back the manager with THE MONEY even if we have to gamble. We all envy Bill; as an Evertonian, he has got the next best thing to playing for the club but it is not a toy to keep and not let anybody else play with. It means too much to too many people. Find THE MONEY, let us shed our bitterness and leave us with tales to tell in years to come.
