Personality and character

By Jim Hourigan :  16/06/2007 :  Comments (37) :
We all look at players, the opposition as well as our own and comment on their character, their personality, their attitude in the game and their desire, particularly when things are not going too well.

Well, I have to admit that being a reluctant Champ Man player, I am now getting more than a little concerned at the obvious lack of progress on the new personnel front. This leads me to look at DM and BK and their character and personality and compare them to the opposition. Whilst it is wrong to stereotype DM as a dour Scottish spendthrift, I think the evidence to date suggests he is quite frugal with his (Bill's) money. He clearly will not be held to ransom with wage demands and transfer fees. He appears to set a limit and no matter what, will not budge. But how does this character set us up in the present climate?

Clearly, old 'egg head' at WHU has raised the stakes. He is offering silly money and silly wages and let's be honest no one will turn round and say "No thanks I'm not really worth that much", and "I don't want that much money". So what happens to the rest of us? We are now in a game with different rules Chelski, ManU, WHU, Newcastle etc all have money and will adapt and change, they might not like it, they might actually wish they never started it, but they damn well won't lose out.

What price our leaders then? DM, who shows all the flexibility and adaptability in his tactics and selection of dinosaur. BK has the financial clout of an out-of-work actor. But, far more importantly, there are other characteristics in both that do not paint a positive picture for the immediate future. Moyes is stubborn, defensive in mindset and belligerent in attitude. He will not be taken for a ride and thinks he is right to take that stance. In reality, he may be right on an ethical level, but sticking to your principles when all the better players are at other clubs, and we're left in November with half a side, wishing we had bought 3 or 4 more players, will be no good at all. Have the two of them learnt from the debacle after CL qualification? Have they adapted their strategy and recognised what needs to be done? Have they actually got a plan?

Well I hope I'm wrong, but the silence is deafening. We have little money and BK will not pay over the odds and we don't look like were going to get anyone of any quality. Fernandes has obviously decided to go home, but how hard did DM try and how supportive was BK financially? Who are we going to get in the present climate when these two won't play within the new rules?

Unless I'm very much mistaken, these 2 have the character and personality of the playground sulks who bring the football for the match but because they are losing decide they have to go home early and take their ball with them. I hope I'm wrong and they have a plan and lots of new players are all going to arrive before pre-season training starts in two weeks time!

Apart from Doddy, is anyone feeling comfortable and relaxed?

Personally, Jim, I think your being a little hard on David Moyes. I once heard a quoute from him and he said if you can't afford Armani then you have to shop at Marks and Spencer. It may be a simplistic view but also very true, Moyes knows his hands are tied in terms of the money available, the ceiling on wage demands and the pay structure that exists. Do you honestly believe that, if Moyes was offered a warchest then he would refuse it, until we find a sugar daddy, Jim ? then we can only trust our manager to wheel and deal.

Peter, I understand what you mean but the problem is that M&S is the ’new armani’ and both of these 2 are stuck in a mind set of shopping at M&S. The goods there are over priced and just moved up from TKMax. If you want quality you have to pay for it and if the price has gone up do you sit back and complain or go and earn some more money and pay the going rate? - no matter how much it galls.

Jim, where will the money come from? Are you suggesting the ticket prices go up to 1000 pounds for a cheap seat? Or is there 50 million lying around in the sofa at Bill’s or David’s house?

It’s easy to say David should buy five or six of players for 15-20 million each. That way we would certainly be challenging for everything. This is an obvious statement. However, if you only have 10-15 million (optimistically) then five or six players will have to avarage out at 2-3 million each.

I, too, am worried about our apparent lack of transfer activity , but if you consider the major targets a) play for Sheff Utd.b) could be involved in the under 21 tournament, then perhaps we should have faith! The manager told us things would not happen quickly and he’s kept his word there.
What I find more disappointing is no apparent inward investment. My god , are West Ham, Blackburn and Man City better investment prospects than Everton??? Or is the real money waiting for the outcome of negotiations on the site of the new ground?
We really need to take full advantage of our entry to Europe this season and no way will we do that without additions to the squad.
But for one more week I will try to stay calm and reflect on the statement "in Moyes we trust".
Don’t let us down Davey!

Really good post Jim and I think you have Moyes character spot on.

He is a stubborn man, absurdly so at times, and I think this love-in that he has with his own image will cost us yet again.

The game is evolving all the time and there are those who move with the times, Allardyce, Redknapp etc, and those who are seemingly stuck in their ways...like Moyes.

A month ago I was full of optimism that Moyes had finally learnt his lesson and that we were in for a summer of good business and a season full of promise lay ahead.

With every passing day without movement though that optimism is further drained and negativity takes its place. You can’t help but think to yourself ’i’ve seen this all before’. That is what I would say to the ’wait and see’ brigade...I will do, I have no choice..I have seen it all before though.

With every quality player we either pass up(Fernandes) or who goes elsewhere(Parker,Barton) our chances of recruiting genuine quality get ever slimmer.

As Jim is astute enough to realise with the market moving as it is and Moyes seemingly unwilling to pay what I would call ’the going rate’ for players it’s getting tougher and tougher to see anything other than tears before bedtime!!

I hope to be proven wrong but i’m not holding my breath.

Unless there’s a sea change in football in England or Sir Macca takes me up on my suggestion (give EFC 500 million to stop the soon to be ex-missus getting it)all we can do is try to increase the team quality each year, within our limited budget, and produce our own Premiership-standard players.
This latter either through the ranks or by taking promising foreign/lower-division players and moulding them.
I reckon that’s what Moysesy has done and will have to keep doing. I know it’s painful for us arlies but reality hurts.

Sorry Jim but I can’t quite follow your train of thought on this one at all. Firstly you blame Moyes for being tight with the cash and not spending more when he doesn’t have any more to spend. Then you use Newcastle and West ham as examples of how it should be done when they both finished a country mile behind us last year and probably will next year too. Newcastle have signed Viduka but look set to lose Owen..signed Barton but lost Parker. West ham have signed Parker but look set to lose Reo Coker. That is just about all the business that has been done apart from Man Utd even Liverpool with thier Billionaire owners havn’t bought anyone yet.
We already have a good team from last year and a half decent squad. What is important is that the players Moyes brings in this summer improve the team or squad and move us on a bit further. It would seem we have £10m - £15m to spend this summer and we probably need 4 - 5 players if we are to compete in the Uefa and maintain our league form so yes Moyes is going to have to shop around and wheel and deal but I would rather have him in charge than Rednapp or Allardyce any day of any season. I am relaxed and hopeful for next season and sure that he will get the job done within budget.

Well said Barry Bragg, I agree with everything you posted.

I’m sick of people making out that other teams’ dealings in the transfer market are so wonderful, or that they are somehow going to overtake us next season. As you posted, the two teams doing all the dealings seem to be swapping like for like. We have a stability, which is a very underrated factor. There is no point buying just for the sake of buying.

He is offering silly money and silly wages and let’s be honest no one will turn round and say "No thanks I’m not really worth that much", and "I don’t want that much money".

Darren Bent has just done so. Okay, he didn’t say he wasn’t worth that much, just simply turned them down. Money’s not everything and I don’t mean the usual romantic concepts, I mean the very real and material advantages of a stable workplace with a stable concept ("We don’t have a team and we were nearly relegated but we have loads of money and buy whoever we can and try to push for Europe" is not a real concept.) and having normal colleagues.

One sure way to lose your existing quality players is to pay someone new coming in twice what they?re on. There?ll be immediate wage increase demands from their agents and even the ?lesser? players in the team will be asking for more (like McFadden did last season)

There?s got to be a transition into a new wage structure for all or a rewards system of bonus payments for acheivement.

As we all suspect though BK doesn?t have the money for the expensive new players so it?s a bit of a moot point.

12   Posted 18/06/2007 at 06:33:36

I assume that when it is stated that Everton have only 10-15M to spend on players that this is above and beyond wages. And why is it assumed that if we have this much and we need five new players that they must cost 2-3M each? Chelsea (this is not an error) have just spent 2.5M on four new players. Don?t tell me, they are attracted to Chelsea because they will play in European competition. Isn?t this now, and wasn?t it the last time we qualified for the early stages of European competition, the reason we need more and hopefully, better players?
Until the financial position is made clear it is very difficult to second guess what, if anything, is happening at Goodison.

13   Posted 18/06/2007 at 08:02:24

Where has this figure of 10-15M come from?
As far as I am aware EFC have not stated how much money Moyes has for the silly season.
I have also seen that WHU are interested in Fernandes. Just goes to show that we always miss out during the tranfer window because of our inability to close deals or accept the market position.
Steve Syder
14   Posted 18/06/2007 at 08:49:20

Moyes had money to spend the season we qualified for the early stages of the Champions’ League and he failed to spend it because he will not accept the market rate for players.

Think about the last time you bought a car - you have an idea of what you want to pay for the car you want, but it is invariably more expensive, and you have to decide whether or not to pay the going rate.

Moyes chose not to, and cost us dear, then suddenly the money was gone - not to mention the appeal of Everton to quality players as we were unceremoniously dumped out of Europe.

I really, really hope that Moyes has learned from this and will change his ways - just as I hope he learned from the crowd’s booing (rightly) his cowardly tactics at the Spurs game - but unfortunatley the evidence suggests not.

15   Posted 18/06/2007 at 09:17:23

I think you’re unfair in your assessment of Moyes’ character Jim. Yes he is stubborn and refuses to be taken for a ride but these are not necessarily bad qualities. They mean Everton are not exploited by other clubs eager to make that little bit extra on their players. Incidentally, note Everton also have a pretty good record for sales, were Davies, Bent and Kilbane really worth the price we got for them?

More pertinent, are the prices and wages being paid to those we’ve ’missed out on’ like Barton and Parker really what the players would be worth to Everton. Bear in mind that if one of them were receiving £60k+ a week there’d be little way we could justify not paying the same to Arteta, Cahill and Johnson.

WHU and Newcastle are throwing the transfer market up in the air somewhat at the moment but they’re doing it in an unsustainable way promoting instability within their own dressing rooms and compelling overspending in others. The reality however is that the majority of teams can’t afford to spend like that and they simply won’t, I thoroughly expect to see some more sensibly priced deals occurring over the next two weeks now the Spanish League is finished, the U21s are coming to a close and the WHU/Sheff Utd situtation is coming to a head. Whether the big spenders have bought themselves success will become apparent in time but my money certainly isn’t being placed on that.

16   Posted 18/06/2007 at 09:49:24

All this jumping up and down over the lack of transfer activity makes me laugh, for the following reasons:

1) Most players are on holidat at the moment,

2) The U21 side that has 2 of our alleged targets wont be back from Europe unitl end of June.

3) Other leauges are just finishing.

This means that most of the serious tranfer business wont happen for another week atleast.

Another point is that most of the negotiations take place behined closed doors, we dont know who BK and DM are talking to, and probably wont until any deal has been progressed.

If you look at most of the other clubs they are in the same position as us.

I know I’ll never get the seconds back it took me to read and digest this article and the comment but comparing Moyes unfavourably to Rednapp & Alledyce I can only presume you are mental. (The game is evolving all the time and there are those who move with the times, Allardyce, Redknapp etc,)

"Clearly, old ’egg head’ at WHU has raised the stakes."

This is just silly, Jim. West Ham have signed nobody, as yet; you’ve "clearly" been reading too many tabloids.

David Moyes is one of the best in the business, as recognised by his two (so far) Manager of the Year awards. Stereotyping him as some kind of ’stingy’ Scot is a nonsense; it seems to me that he’s simply refusing to spend money we haven’t got, and what money we have got he spends wisely, paying just £2m for Tim Cahill, for example, who’s now worth six times that, or Mikel Arteta, also £2m, also now worth considerably more than that. He’s doing fine, in my book.

I see you’ve cited Newcastle United in your list of teams to aspire to? A prime example, if ever there was one one, of how throwing money around is no guarantee of success.

Altogether, a poor article. Some good, sensible responses, though.

The transfer window doesnt officially open until July 1st anyway does it??

Dont panic at the lack of signings..clubs such as Villa, Blackburn, Derby, Fulham and Man City have yet to make any new additions, with Arsenal, Reading, Spurs, West Ham, Sunderland and Liverpool making only one new signing so far.

There is still a whole 10 weeks until August 31 so have faith. Maybe have a rant if we dont have a new player through the door by the end of July.

I think we should lay off Moyes as he has been the best thing for Everton since HK. As for Bill Kenwright, who would you rather have (Redshite) in charge who sold our star player behind the managers back. The only player Moyes has sold who he didn’t want to was Shrek and that was down to his love for McDonalds (so he needed the extra revenue).
Moyes will sign players who are hungry for the club, he has tried big name players like shandy and this has backed fired on the club as the guy couldn’t even get himself motivated enough to be fit enough to train and play for 90 minutes.
Nugent, Jakelgia and possibly Reo-Coker - hold off and we will get his players at the right price.

at least 8o percent of dm buys have turned out good players and the ones he’s sold on he’s made money on,also stewart downing not convinced he’s even worth 5 million what about mcsheffery scores more goals than downing another 4 plus points off the darkside i’ll be well pleased c’mon you blues

I think that DM has learnt his lesson from 2 seasons ago on spending on the correct players.

Some of you guys had made some valid points about how other clubs are doing their business in the transfer market i.e. either not making any moves or switching like for like. I didn;t really thought about that from that angle and somehow I feel a bit more comforted.

I just hope that DM will sign players who play for with their heart for their clubs... Please get Nugent, Jag and Grella!!!!

I think it?s all about the players wages and trying to keep a cap on them..DM will prob pay most of the transfer fees but will not upset the apple cart by having one or two players on double the others are on..we will miss out on a few decent players but it?s good to see him take a stance on it..just hope other managers will have the bottle to do so as well.

As one who remembers many wet and miserable Walter Smith away days (it always rained in those days), I am happy with progress so far. As for Moyes and BK, cast your mind back to the Tim Cahill transfer. Jordan stuck to his principles on agent fees (and good on him), and we played the modern game and got the man. We finished fourth, Palace got relegated. Sorry Jim, but I feel that this one example shows that your arguement is flawed. Cautious yes, but there is nothing wrong with that. Wish they had been a little more cautious over VDM!

Didn?t Leeds United try to keep up with Man Utd & Co in their transfer dealings a few years back ? It didn?t exactly work out well for them did it ? I would rather we tried to keep within our means than try and splash out 50 or 60 million backed by loans set against future season ticket sales. After all DM didn?t do too badly last year with Lescott as one of his signings. I don?t recall that move being the main football news of the day. I?d rather he spent wisely and within his budget or perhaps you would like him to spend say 17 million on Darren Bent from Charlton ?

Can't we just at least sign Fernandes!? He's a class act! We're going backwards if we don't get him! Anyone see his goal the other night? Awesome! Type his name in on YouTube and a video will come up with all his goals and skills! Just the type of player we need!

I would like to take this chance to say that i am really fed up with the lack of buying going on at EVERTON. For the last few years we have made last minute panick buys (Van der mayde just one of the few)I think its about time that Kenwright admits that he does not have the money or backing to take us further and go..Everton have been and can still be a major force in football. But why are every other club in the land being linked with big money take overs and we still sit there going backwards. We now have European football to look forward to but if we do not replace the players we have let go and buy at least another 4-5 we will be the joke of England again when we get knocked out in the early rounds of the Euro cup. Please can we take Everton back to where we belong. I’m sure we all want to see a trophy next season, but with the squad we have I can’t see us making the top ten.

I agree with most of what you say Jim But until Kenwright either gets investment or sells up I think we stuck in the shite the silly money bandied around now is way above the scope of Kenwright and as far as Moyes is concerned I’m not his greatest fan but feel the lack of activity is down to our beloved by some chairman

I find it so difficult to believe that blackburn are a better prospect to invest in than Everton. We have the fanbase, the manager and the players to progress and what do Blackburn have other than a newer stadium that they can’t fill? something is smelling fishy and i think its BK again.

am not getting too worried yet about the lack of transfers. Have worked in the sports section of a newspaper and know that most of the time transfer links are just made up to get fans excited and buy the paper. Also, remember a couple of years ago with sissoko? Moyes made it known that he was after him then the shite swooped in. any transfer dealings will be kept as secret as possible until the last min methinks. Would love manny back though.

We need to remain calm lads. I think the way in which west ham are doing their business is unprofessional. They just bid big to land a player but they need to keep in mind that they are a club that stayed in the prem by the skin of their teeth, not exactly an attractive proposition if the players are ambitious and not completely money motivated like say Lucas Neill. I’m keeping calm, I renewed my season ticket in the hope that we can hang on to Mikel, Johnson, Cahill etc but also that we add a couple of good players. Who knows what might already be in place on the transfer front.

I am surprised that the quality of a player is always judged by the price tag attached. I can recall some of the major ricketts EFC has made by paying too much for poor quality. Billic, Nyarko, Bakayoko, Kroldrup, Beattie, Barmby. Who are these players that we must buy to progress. Sometimes it pays to wait. Tuncay, Viduka, Distin were all free transfers. Splashing out millions is not the be all and end all.

Whilst I do share some of the fears and troubles that Jim expressses, I feel strongly that we are moving in the right direction. We have nearly always been a club which has evolved. I would hate to see a bid from unknown money men suddenly change the nature of Everton.

The only real frustration I have is that we cannot seem to bid on Fernandes now. Benfica are not a giant of Europe; rather, a good team in Portugal. They have seen a lot of money go into their main rivals from inflated price sales. They seem to want a slice of the action from the Premiership?s super bank of world football. However, we do need to use next year?s EXTRA Sky money as the bank. And take from that sufficient fund to develop the playing staff by bringing in Fernandes.

One player of real quality, a ball player each year added to the team, plus another good but slightly aged Scholes in part payment of debt or swap, plus a trawl from the Championship would be considerably better than throwing a huge sum on a Bent or semi-knackered VDM-type so-called super-star of European football.

DM has 5 years of experience, his buys improve with age and his experience of top flight has shown him that mangement is about buying carefully within a limited budget. Within two weeks we will know whether Jags is available. Although there will be a few other clubs hunting for utility players, we are in Europe, can afford decent wages and we are always behind the team at every game. We are worth moving to, the shite waste huge sums every year, we cannot afford that luxury. Careful purchases of players that improve the squad does not mean we need a revolution. We need to keep evolving.
