COLUMNIST JOHN HOLMES
Submitting to the Silly Season
I keep telling myself I won't contribute to the transfer debates, I'll sit and wait then pass judgement when the season gets underway. As the week goes by I generally get more and more frustrated (and I'll confess that I'm starting to get a little itchy for signings now) and eventually something sparks me into response. This time it's Jim Hourigan's claims we need to adapt to the new rules of silly money.
I'm still not convinced by this argument that we have to play by WHU?s and Newcastle's silly money rules. Yes we are always going to be outbid on wages and often on transfer fees if they're about but I still don't think that necessarily means they get to dictate the market or, more importantly, the outcomes. I've said many times on these pages that Newcastle's league placing can be more accurately predicted by throwing a dart blindfolded than looking at the money spent.
Take a look at some of the players with silly money attached to them. Does anyone really believe Scott Parker is worth £90k/wk? He's a very good player but not in that wage bracket by any stretch of the imagination. Would you not be disgusted if Everton agreed to pay him that? If Eggie wants to pay him that much, good luck, but that means every chancer who WHU approach will expect the same treatment. I can?t imagine Tevez saying ?Yep, I?ll stick around but don?t pay me as much as Scott, just give me £20k and I?ll be happy?. The same goes for the clubs WHU approach for transfers; everyone they bid for now is going to have a silly money pricetag slapped on them now matter how much Eggie says they won't be taken for a ride. £17m for Bent? £20m for Johnson? Nonsense. They've been had and now everyone wants a trip. Abramovich tried the same 'won't pay over the odds' trick but little seems to have changed at Chelsea.
What about the outcomes? Newcastle also paid silly wages to Parker (£70k) and yet most fans seem to agree he's no massive loss. Ashley Cole threw his toys out of his pram for a bigger wage but he's come out of it looking a far worse player at Chelsea than the world's best left-back he was at Arsenal. Ballack and Schevchenko have experienced similar downfalls. I would argue throwing silly money at players can be as corrosive as signing poor players. The same affect is achieved just it comes from excess complacency rather than lack of ability. A star player isn?t the one you spunked the most money on it?s the one who excels the most within the structures he?s asked to operate. In Everton?s relatively static game it?s Arteta but put him in the pacey, flying Arsenal structure and he?d flounder on the wing with his lack of pace. Where Davies struggled in Everton?s tight, workmanlike approach he?s flourished in Fulham?s more spacious (or perhaps, more accurately, porous) style.
So what's the solution. Well for me it's to do what Moyes has largely done since he's come here. Buy the players who fit into the team and his approach to football. Yes he's a pragmatist who expects hard work but that means he should sign effective rather than flashy players and players who want to work hard for their money not just cash in their chips. The mentality of the club has to be the same through and through to make the unit work as a whole. Yes we need Artetas to add some flair and a Fernandes would have been nice for some unpredictability but the ultimate aim is not to bring in star signings but to produce an effective team. They interact as concepts but they are not one and the same. There is little point in Moyes and Kenwright being held to ransom by Benfica (or unnamed third-parties) if Moyes is not convinced that Fernandes can adapt to the times style. It looks great to say we have a £12m Portuguese star midfielder but if said star goes missing in the winter when the going gets tough and the results need to be ground out then that?s £12m that could have been spent better elsewhere.
So, should Kenwright get his hands out of his pockets, should Moyes stop playing by his rules and adopt new one's as Jim Hourigan has argued. Frankly no. He should ADAPT to the climate but not ADOPT it. In practice that means the fees will most likely be higher than a couple of years ago but it means if we bid £8m and get told the player will cost £15m then we say "sod off and find another mug". It's been well-documented that there are a host of players available who openly speak of a desire to play for Everton and that's just the ones that speak out. Moyes is clearly not targetting any specific players as must-buys, (or if he is he?s playing an odd game) thus he has the freedom to shop around for the best buys. That's a great advantage in the current market and one we should make best use of. We set a price the player is WORTH TO US, and if they won?t meet us there then, just like when buying a car, you get up and walk out of the showroom. In the limited market of football you can always come back later if no one else has bought and see if the seller?s had a change of heart. You don?t keep bidding higher until the seller gets what the player is worth to them. Nugent can moan that we haven't come in for him but the pricetag is one clear reason why. Maybe that will serve as a warning to other clubs and players, if you want to move to Everton, Everton will not be taken for a ride. For those criticising Kenwright, who's the better businessman - the one who pays whatever is asked or the one who gets the desired outcome at the best price?

My point was there’s no point over-spending our budget on a player like Fernandes UNLESS Moyes feels he can do what Moyes will want him to do. Otherwise, like those who say Beattie isn’t helped by Everton’s style, he will simply end up looking like he’s underachieving.
Whether the whole style of football at Everton is wrong is a different question and comes down to whether you think Moyes is the right man. But there is no point in us buying players to play in a team that wants to play a different kind of football to the manager.

I guess the only question left hanging is: where do we find these honest team players better than those we currently have at prices that aren’t silly. Moyes is never going to have Wenger-like ability to spot an unknown bargain - the players he is looking at are players everyone else has run the rule over.

Maybe because he doesn?t accept the approuches of dodgy Middle-East consortia or corrupt Thai ex-PMs?
Let?s be honest: with the sole exception of the Eggman the only people who invest nowadays in Premiership football are American sports bilionaires and high-profile bandits from countries where corruption is the normal way of social interaction.
Many say we need massive investment. After all, what damage could loads of transfer money do?
Actually, quite a lot. Look at Newcastle. They have the money but don?t have the sense to use it effectively. They spend big but think little.
Starting with a well-balanced budget makes matters only worse. If we pay silly wages, it poisons the atmosphere unless we pay silly money for our current squad as well.
So if we want more money (which is basically okay) we should also look for people who can handle that amount of money. Can Moyes do that? I don?t think anyone knows the answer.

Surely they’re either in persuit of a plaything or it’s a business deal for them? Whilst I’m not against anyone making money from Everton, as long as they’re in it to develop the club at the same time, I sincerely believe that it’s much better for the long term stability of the club that Everton means so much to Kenwright.
What happens to Chelsea if Abramovich pulls out? Look at Blackburn post Jack Walker- they still trade on a budget, but for a long time they had no money at all.
Prudent dealings in the transfer market have brought Cahill, Arteta and Lescott in particular to the club. This proves that there are bargains out there and, as we all know, money doesn’t guarantee success anyway.
In Moyes and Kenwright we trust. Let’s hope that tomorrow’s hearing means that we can finally sign up Jagielka, who would be another bargain at £4 mill!
16 Posted 18/06/2007 at 00:50:04
If we want to move up another level then this is what we should be doing. We already have a decent team. Johnson, Vaughan, Arteta, Cahill, Lescott, Yobo and Howard are all talented players who are going to help the club progress. A few signings added to this would see us progressing even more. The thing that annoys me is Moyes’s lack of knowledge of foreign players. All his signings are of people who have already played in england or are british themselves.
I personally would like to see a bit of flair and skill and places like portugal, spain and italy are where you find this. I love to see homegrown and british players in the everton team but it just makes us to predictable. 11 workhorses running around trying to grind out results every game is not going to work.
We have obvoiusly passed on Fernandes. We have let go a gem in my opinion. Not a rough diamond a gem. He had the creative instincts of Arteta but the strength of british player. The way he held of opponents at his size was quite amazing to see. The only flaw I could see in his game was his workrate and It was exactly the same when Arteta first arrived.
I would not be happy if we replaced Fernandes with Jagielka. People still seem to think he is a midfielder but ask any sheff utd fan his is a defender. He can do a job in midfield like Phil Neville yet like Neville he is limited.
I cant believe I am actually praying that someone like Van Der Meyde or Osman will come good next season. Football is all about money these days. If we are not going to pay over 5 million for a player then we will never progress into a regular top 6 side.
17 Posted 18/06/2007 at 01:11:12
It is imperative that we not only consolidate our league position but allow the club to enjoy a fruitful European campaign by increasing the quality AND quantity of players on the books. I?d love to believe that will happen but I suspect it won?t.
Some of the football we have played in the last 10 years or more has been an embarrassment to me, I grew up with EFC playing proper footie.
We seem to have some £15m to spend.. how desperate would our situation be if we?d finished 10th, some £4 million less in prize money. Why isn?t there more available when there is supposedly a massive boost to TV revenue? Not as if, like Arsenal have done, we are trying to save funds to build a stadium - we want a retail-park freebie.
There is silly money being thrown around at the moment and we can?t really compete with that. West Ham, like Chelsea before them, are a small club in a large city with plenty to offer the foreign investor... cheap to buy, property in the capital and top flight status. All good stuff for the rich man?s plaything. Walton is not quite so glamourous but we cannot afford not to strengthen and if we don?t we will yo-yo once again and to do that we HAVE to spend, inflated market or not. We don?t need to compete when we have identified our own targets, we just need some imagination a la Wenger
No matter how much they spend Newcastle are unlikely to ever win anything, whoever throws money at Man City or Birmingham will similarly be pissing into the wind. But I genuinely think Everton could be different..
I am disappointed and disgusted by the complacency and (IHMO) fawning ignorance of contributors like Mr Dodd. I am sure he cares just as much as me about the club - he just doesn?t seem to understand what Everton is.
18 Posted 18/06/2007 at 05:35:44
You are simply rehashing what many Evertonians have said on numerous occassions since the transfer window opened and could easily have made the point in a few sentences.
For the record, I disagree with you in that I would prefer Moyes to spend his limited budget on a few highly technical, skilful players rather than investing in 5 or 6 Kilbanes and having to endure a sixth season of mainly sterile football.
19 Posted 18/06/2007 at 08:26:39
Like you I don’t think we need to be throwing massive sums at players, rather we need to identify the players who are right for us irrespective of how big a star they are. You mention Wenger and he’s the one to aspire to in these stakes. Stars can be bought but they can also be made.
On a more personal note I’m not too keen on us touting ourselves to foreign investors for the simple reason that I don’t want to see Everton sell their soul for the hope of quickfire success. As Peter said, do we really want corrupt Thai politicians, Russian billionaires with equally dubious connections and the massive debts that Liverpool and United are saddled with. Do you not see something slightly soulless in Chelsea’s success? Wow you spent £100m+ and won the league... aren’t you clever? I would feel little pride or joy in Everton achieving success on such terms.
Yes we need SOME money and that figure has increased but silly money? Nah, I like Moyes approach, we work with what we have, don’t moan and see just how far his team-building exercise can take us.

21 Posted 18/06/2007 at 10:06:59
Simple really, you are a small, insginificant club who nobody outside of your tiny fanbase is interested in.
I mean, look at it from the point of view of a potential foreign investor.
He would obviously never have heard of everton until someone explained that you are the 2nd club in the city of Liverpool, he would look at your wooden, delapidated stadium, he would notice you never fill this stadium unless you play LFC, he would no doubt investigate your on field results and see that you have not come within a million miles of winning a trophy for over 12 years, then he would find out that you are skint and he would have to pay off your debts, and what for?
Most of your players are crap, your ground is a hole, and you haven’t got a hope in hell of winning anything for the forseeable future. The potential for earning money at your club is minimal, most of the people in the city you are based support the main club (LFC), and you are virtually unheard of outside of the UK.
Overall then, you make a pretty unattractive investment propostition, who can blame people for steering well clear?
22 Posted 18/06/2007 at 09:50:57
To those who believe that Kenwright should sell up to a foriegn investor.......well here’s a thought. Do you all want a club that is taken over by a ’billionare’ investor who’s sole purpose is to make money for himself and really doesn’t have the fans interests at heart. Do you want a new owner who views our great club as nothing but a plaything for the rich and famous. I myself would rather have an owner who is blue through and through and will do things for the greater good of the club.
My opinion is that billionaire foreign investors will inevitably lead to the following:
Raised ticket prices (end of the day their investment will all be about profit)
Ridiculous wages
An influx of overpriced, overrated players that are chasing money rather than the prestige of pulling on the royal blue, what I call mercenary players.
Lets get our thoughts in check, just because teams such as Birmingham, Man City and even Blackburn are being touted a potential targets for foriegn investment does not mean we should follow suit. It also does not mean that we are less attractive as a potential investment, these investors would invest in any team that allows them to as long as they are in the Premiership.
One last thought.......do you think these investors will stick around if success is not acheived within their own set timescales..........do you think investors will keep ploughing money into their investment if they don’t see any returns???????

That is a good word to describe the best way EFC should be practising.
Firstly, we are all a little frustrated and ancy with the amount of transfre activity at the club so far, but we must still show a little patience, at least for the next few weeks. If it get’s to mid july and we still have not signed anybody then PANIC!
Everybody who comments on this site with regards to transfer activity all have valid points and we all want the best for our mighty club. YES, we do need to buy at least 2 qulaity players who will play a significant part in the club moving forward, playing good football and winning trophies and YES we do need to add to the squad size as the demands of next season will be too much for our current squad, that much is clear.
But the key word is risk management, Moyes and Big Ken will know that we need quality and quantity to move forward but they will also realise as should we, that we should NOT get into bidding wars, throwing silly money around, paying over inflated prices because the likes of eggheadson fancies himself as the big i am.
However, they must still show the fans and the players at EFC that they do mean business and within reason will go all out to land great players at Everton, which in the end i trust they will do.
With regards to the transfer kitty, nobody really knows how much moyes has 10m, 15m or 25m, but i do know that he is no mug and will get the best players possible for the right money at the right time.
Finally i have 2 words of warning to put things into perspective and to give us all patience,
LEEDS UTD

I feel we need to invest money in quality players for the coming season. If that means 5m + then so be it.
We can’t expect to compete again as we did this year with a squad full of average players.
I agree with most posts saying no to a foreign investor/buyer just look at the crap going on at Chelski (manager doesn’t talk to owner) and the Shite (Biternez future in doubt).
29 Posted 18/06/2007 at 12:03:11
To those people who think John Holmes is saying Moyes should spend money on "average, hard working players" should re-read his article.
John is saying Moyes should spend money on BETTER players who are also hard-working. There is no mention of "average" anywhere I have read!
Moyes doesn’t have the money to gamble too much on players and needs to find players who fit and move the team on a stage.

34 Posted 18/06/2007 at 13:17:29
You have to look at the bigger picture do you think you would fill your stadium if you had faced a decade of relegation. No chance. And how can you talk about are onfield performances. If we had half your money then we would be in a better position than LfC. Imagine Benitez in Moyes’s shoes. He would not be able to cope because he is a priveleged manager. He has never had to worry about money or wage structure. This to me is because of his background. You have and upper class spanish manager who got to be a manager because of his rich mummy and daddy.
I cant belive that you think that most people in Liverpool support LFC. How many of your so called scouser fans go the match every week? Why do I continually see German, swedish, Norweigen and Irish flags around your stadium. Take it from me I have lived in inner city liverpool my entire life. You maybe able to the fool some people but not me.
You see to think we are bitter but you continually come on an evertonian website and compare your club to ours. Maybe a little bit of jealousy?
You are also not the first team in Liverpool. 1878 read the badge mother fucker. Thats history you will never have. Why dont you come on the site and talk fairly with us instead of being a sad little bastard.
35 Posted 18/06/2007 at 13:58:33
As for the question of local support, I too have lived in Liverpool all my life (31 years), and there is no doubt the vast majority of people in the city support LFC. Whether they all go to every home game is a different matter, as we have a huge waiting lists for season tickets at Anfield, and, being a global club, are bound to attract a large international fanbase.
This doesn’t mean the majority of scousers aren’t Reds though, as proven by the hundreds of thousands who lined the streets in 2005, and by the fact that everton cannot fill their ground. If you’ve got so many scouse fans, why don’t they go the game? It’s easy to get tickets for the woodyard ,unlike at Anfield, where it is nigh on impossible.
As for being the first club in the city, well, I think we all know that LFC are by far the leading club in the city, which is what I meant, ask most people around the world and they won’t even know what ’everton’ is, nevermind where you are from.

Of course he has made mistakes (Kroldrup/Van Der mayde) and also been unlucky with one or two moves not coming off as they should (Davies/ Ferrari). But, on the whole, he has found decent players with a work ethic, that has steadily improved Evertons league placings to a point where we now expect to be challenging for Europe each season.
(never thought we would be saying that after Smith did we?)
I have faith in Moyes judgement now, leave the transfers to him and just get behind the team.
As for Kenwright, he needs to listen to the fans more though! I feel he has lost too much credability now and needs a miracle to make people believe in him again.
44 Posted 24/06/2007 at 11:04:21
You have a wide of the mark assesment of Everton at the moment.
Yes, the club is in debt, like most of the others in the same league! Are you acting all cocky now because some yanks have pulled you out of the shit? (wasn’t it your fans taking great delight at chanting USA, USA at the Mancs 2 seasons ago?).
But, Everton are no less an attractive proposition than the other clubs who have been subject to recent outside investment, so dont be a silly little man with these comments.
As for the comments on the team, and the players being crap, I think you will find the only difference in our league placings last season was down to us drawing a few more than you, with the wins being roughly the same. But you won’t notice that I suppose, as you do not come across as very bright in your rantings.
And, the standard of players we have now is much higher than it has been for a long while.
You keep playing for 3rd or 4th every year as that is all you can manage these days!
What a sad state of affairs for a once great club.
I think you have your own problems to worry about...along with being the "official worst fans in Europe".
Unless you have anything sensible to say pal, stay on your own sites, we are trying to have a sensible debate here!
45 Posted 25/06/2007 at 06:30:12
I’m from Australia and EVERYONE here who knows football knows who Everton are... " they are the team that twatted LFC 3-0 aren’t they?"
Nuff Said.

No wonder you can’t get tickets for anfield, coachloads of germans and norwegians will ALWAYS get priority over liverpool-based REDSHITE fans...
Unlike at the PEOPLES CLUB.
And "only 46 mill in 3 years" plus massive pay rises to Gerrard etc for LOYALTY what a joke!
Yank owned, Spanish run, supported by Germans and Norwiegians...no wonder you’re so proud of your once-great club!
And i wonder...is it because you can’t speak German that you come to this site rather than your own soulless foreign Shite Site to be with other scousers? Wunderbar!

Smart Evertonians put him in his place and generally make him look like the assclown he is and show why people have such a horrible opinion of Liverpools fans.
The End.
