Oz: Wrong choice

I am really not getting our marketing department. We bring in THE biggest football name the USA has, and what do we do —- ignore it!
Why are we going to Australia this summer? Surely it makes so much more sense to visit the States and optimise the connection with Landon rather than start all over again in Oz, where, with respect, I can't see the commercial opportunities being any way near as beneficial.
We should be organising a tournament with us and three MLS sides (including the likes of LA and NY) that will firmly put us on the map. I know we have been to the States before but never have we been on the back of such a positive press from our tie in with their star player.
I honestly can't understand this decision to ignore a potentially money-spinning trip. If we are going to leave Europe during pre-season it has to be for the best of the club and from where I am, Australia over USA just doesn't quite stack up.
To summarise — I think we are missing a big opportunity that could:
- Help us get Landon back
- Increase the awareness of EFC in a country where football is really starting to take off
- God forbid, maybe help us find a potential investor!

The expected gates for Everton are in the 30-thousand mark and the fact that they are speaking to Brisbane Roar to set up an footy school here is a great thing, bringing our brand worldwide.

It's not always about money, it's showing your loyalty to the whole world and we've been to the USA a few times, I don't see any changes it's made for us. Landon Donovan, if he comes or not, will always have good things to say about us.
Anyways, I just can't wait to see the greatest football team on earth who are willing to travel anywhere to show their loyalty to the world.
If we wanted to take advantage of timmy's status we should have had a tour of Oz after the last World Cup when he really was at the height of his powers.
Fly back from Oz into LA or San Fran and play a game there before returning to England.
I suppose it depends what we have planned at home, but if it's more Rochdale and Oldham type games then why not?
ps: I know it's probably too late, but just a thought...
And as I said on a previous post some time ago, of all the commercially popular sports in the US, football ranks just behind tractor pulling and drive by shooting.
And where are these 'extra US based contributors'? They went a little quiet once the man left.

But we have a long way to go and our commercial department needs a rocket up its arse; I checked out a US sitehttp://www.worldsoccershop.com/shop-by-team.html and the Sky3 + RS is there with the shirts selling at $69-100, so was Villa & Spurs, and the Everton section you could buy a baseball cap, a ball and a bottle cooler. And this is with Tim Howard & Donovan playing for us. Rocket up their arse? No.... sack the them all and start again.
I'm not surprised we've not taken the opportunity to continue the work we've put in in the States over the last few years developing our name. Is it any wonder we don't make any money?0 "Soccer" will be higher profile in the States this year because of the World Cup, We already have one of their top stars and a connection with their biggest.

It's a pre-season tour and about a bit of PR and getting fitness levels back. But no, it's not good enough for the Toffeewebbers who like to moan and groan about everything the Club does. In some people's eyes, whatever EFC does they're never happy.

No offence to Oz by the way, I'm sure you would agree, USA has the greater potential for us.
US or Oz, these things take a lot of scheduling... A lot. Without being in on EFC meetings, I'd guess that DM only announced the trip after all the arrangements were completed and signed off on by all parties. I'd bet the talks for a tour down under were already under way when Landon came aboard a few months ago.
Plus, who knew at the time how successful Landon's stay would be? EFC's success against the top team's during that time... DM's hope to extend the loan, etc? A lot of things broke right for the team at once. All while the Oz trip was being worked on.
The magic cash wand to wave is winning. Let's:
a. Get Donovan. He doesn't have to leave LA Galaxy to make his money. Makes a nice salary, very nice endorsement deals in US and Mexico... He WANTS to come back to EFC. He's said it enough times.
b. Be here this time next year discussing EFC and 3 other teams regarding the CL.
c. Set up that US tour.
Look, I'm an American. That EFC didn't/hasn't tried to take advantage of its profile increase over here is a little surprising. Merchandising is synonymous with sports team success... certainly with generating revenue streams. All top teams do it. I'm only in here for these few months so far.
Is the front office really incompetent? DM has built the club without much money. That certainly speaks to managerial ability and competence. However, if the marketing end is second-rate, there's no telling how much revenue is being lost. At its core, marketing is finding ways to scream EFC at the top of your lungs year-round. We're not talking open-heart surgery techniques here...
COYB on the trip to Oz. Let's get Landon back and schedule that trip to the US next year. Oh, and buy Charlie Davies from his French club. He'll come cheap and you all will love him.
40 years ago, passers by and Sunday drivers would pause to wonder what kind of game we were playing. Since then, the game's popularity has exploded. As any football loving Aussie would tell you, this is a land of opportunity and the future is ours.
The reason us Americans have grown quiet is really very simple: Americans are flatly, on the whole, glory hunters.
Man U and Chelsea jerseys everywhere, yet 99% of those wearing them couldn't name 2 players on the the respective squads.
If Everton signed Donovan and actually won the EPL you'd see an insane explosion of fans. And if we dropped down to 8th the numbers of US fans would shrink to bare minimums.
And ToffeeWeb would be back to just me and James Flynn being the only 2 Americans who log onto this site. :0)
Winning will produce American fans, and frankly that's your formula for US exposure. Win.
Sign Donovan and win the damn Premier League! Either way, I'll be here the rest of my life until God rings the bell.

But can't wait for next season to start, sadly that will be Jan 2011 as is always the case under Moyes.
Ship him out and get Hodgson in, at least we'll win something under the man.
There is an issue, one we could do without, such as pointless long distance tours that do NOT benefit us in any way shape or form.
We get fuck all money from going to the US or Australia, instead we get the bad season starts as the boys still think they are on their holidays.
We need to be playing the likes of European competition such as Inter, Juventus, Milan, Madrid or Atletico etc, not some no-mark Euro teams.
Instead, we'll be playing Malaga before the season starts no doubt, or someone of their shit standing, while beforehand we'll be playing some no-mark bottom division teams. No wonder no-one is ready for the season.
Moyes needs to wake the fuck up, get Everton into some Euro mini pre season competitions or take us to Asia where we have financial interests. Asia is the only overseas market we should care about, it's where the fans are, it's where the money is, it's where our sponsors are.
The marketing of this club is a disaster! Until the wankers in charge are removed, we'll be the forever excuse team, who are always on the periphery but too shite to compete with the best where it matters!
Everyone in Oz knows who Cahill is and they know he plays for Everton. This tour is crucial to raising our profile and raising some much needed funds.

You make a good point Brian but as a Melbournian I'm just really lookin forward to seeing the boys rack up a cricket score against the Heart!
