1985 all over again

Well, the official site is in overdrive celebrating the 1985 League success. I was 9 back then and it meant the world to me, just like the Cup Winners Cup just after and the 1987 League Trophy did. I can still remember the pain from the Cup Finals of '85, '86 and '89 plus the league in '86 but anyway...

It seems to me that after 89 we nosedived as a club and have only recently started to recover

My Question is: Will we ever see times like 85 again, ever??

My 2 boys are growing up and my oldest Charlie (4!) is already a keen blue "We are blue boys NOT RED" he keeps saying...

I just hope that by the time he is 9 or 10 we will have won a trophy again, rather than runners up in a devalued Cup Final or getting covered in Champagne for finishing 4th!!

1985 seems such a long, long time ago...

Remember that 4-1 win over Sunderland at Goodison, where no less than 3 of our goals were shortlisted for Goal of the Season? Andy Gray's two diving headers, and Tricky's Exocet into the Park End... Good days!!

Great times had by all. If only Heysel hadn't happened.

One disappointing thing about the EFC website QPR match report... Whoever wrote should be fired for getting Tricky Trev's name wrong!

Official site states that 50,000 attended the 1985 QPR match. I'm sure those who attended this game laughed at this figure. I was sat in Upper Bullens and not only was every seat full, but many, many fans were stood up or sat on the steps between seats or squeezed onto rows.

I don't remember the goals, but I remember Bobby Robson being booed by the faithful when he came on to the pitch.

It wasn't all-seated in 1985 was it?

I know I was STANDING in the paddock (Bullens Rd) for that game. I'm not disputing there were more than 50.000 in the stadium because I couldn't breathe in the crush but there was no way it could be measured by looking around the stadium as we can nowadays.

Sorry Ellen I see what you mean now! There were fans in Upper Bullens who did not have seats!

The proverbial fiver over the turnstile I imagine! (Done it a few times myself)

At the Cup Final that year (just after Rotterdam) I got in for a tenner and did not see anybody in front of me using a ticket to get in Wembley that day! I went for a pee at half time and couldn't get back to my mates in our end. There must have been 120,000 in Wembley that day. For the whole game the concourses were full and fans down there were watching the game on old 17 inch CRT TVs. Pity we lost.

Favourite memory from '85 was from the Ipswich FA Cup game, think it was the 5th round, when Sheedy put a free kick in the top right hand corner of the Park End net. Ref blew and said he wasnt ready and to take it again. Sheedy, cool as fuck, curled it into the top left.

Fuckin beautiful left foot.

My first Everton game was that season, I was 7. It was v Man Utd 5-0. I was sick outside the ground after eating a hot dog.

My second game was then 4-0 v Newcastle. I remember it was in the winter sometime cos it was freezing. After that, My dad always took me as he thought I brought us luck. I didn't see us lose; we played the RS at Goodison in a League Cup, rush scored the winner 1-0 and he must've been off to Juventus soon after. I really hope we have some times like that again.

I remember the Sheedy free kick well from my vantage point in Goodison Road. It is one of my favourite Goodison memories. If you recall, their goalie started on one side of the goal and after the first attempt moved across to the opposite post. So Sheedy then put the ball right where the goalie had been. Classic. I couldn’t be bothered looking it up but didn’t we draw that game 2-2 and didn’t Eric Gates score?

More generally, I always wondered why we never sued a certain party around that time on the basis of lost revenue.

My worst memories of that season all involve Man Utd. We beat them 5-0 at home and 2-1 at Old Trafford in the League Cup. We then drew 1-1 at Old Trafford in the away league game. I was making my way towards the coach we went in which was parked by some warehouses and got jumped by four or five of their supporters.

I got over the bruises no problem... but the bastards robbed my EFC bobble-hat!

The other bad memory of course was the Cup Final... but we were knavkered by then... including the fans!

Great days.

Colin - My favourite too! I still shout for Sheedy when we get a free kick On a more sombre note, Harry Catterick died that day.

Does anyone remember Tottenham away? That was a crush too, they had to open the spaces used for segregation. 13,500 of us there that night!
