Our new Right Winger

Comments (37)

Well after reading the deserved praise for Bily's goal, and the expectations for his future, I should point out that he was only on the pitch for about 20 minutes.

So I thought I would point out the outstanding performance of the match from our new right winger.

Stand up and applaud... Tony Hibbert — who had probably the best game of his career yesterday and even found his way into the opposition penalty box with a chance to score on three occassions.

'Chance to score on three occassions'

Who gives a fuck how many chances he has. Did he score? No. How many times has he scored for us? Sweet fuck all.

So he has a great game against a relegated team resting their better players for the weekend. I think it's medication time, Eric.

Eric, I agree he had a decent game... but Winger?! Ha ha ha... like saying Howard could play upfront because he's tall!! However, praise where praise is due — he was good yesterday!

Tony Hibbert has always been one of Everton's most reliable players.

He's defensively sound and appears to be getting better at moving forward.

He would be more liked if he was a fashionable foreigner.

Looking for goals?

Looks like (according to a pissed Ken Bates) we might have young Mr Beckford.

Beckford an underacheiveing player who at the age of 26-27 found his level in Div 1.

Not exactly going to get excited about that one.

I thought Hibbo was outstanding yesterday, and has been all season when he played. But as always, very little mention of him post match. Now had it been Coleman put that kind of performance in yesterday, no doubt people would be voting him in as next Prime Minister.

Well, either Hibbert has upped his game several notches or tactically astute foreign managers, such as Avram Grant, are happy to allow him possession (knowing that he’s VERY unlikely to do anything worthwhile with it) so that they can put extra pressure on more dangerous players. Know what my money’s on.

Eugene - Bates excels as one of the most, if not the most odious man in football. Dennis Wise ran him close for a while. I have a few chums who support Leeds. Having the pair of them at the helm of their club was apparently akin to feeling like chundering and then cleaning your teeth after kissing your missus.

It's a big step up for Beckford, but goal scorers often have it in their genes. Only time will tell, but as a free it has to be good business. Most players work out under Moyes, so worst case scenario is we sell him on for £5m or so.

Off on a tangent here, sorry: but if ever you needed a reminder why we all hate Leeds so much, do watch the link above.

Revie and Bremner may have passed away and they're no more than a second division club - but the fans and Ken Bates epitomise why they are possibly the most loathed club in the country.

What an ignorant, unsporting, foul-mouthed, uncouth, despicable football club chairman he is.

They both deserve each other.

So

After three draws Moyes brings back Hibbo, He plays against Blackburn and Fulham and is considered MOTM by many knowledgeable Evertonians . .and guess what ? we win both games.

Then . . . For reasons Known only to himself, Moyse leaves him out at Stoke, Jags plays RB and has a complete Weston - he didnt half kick it far though - the winning run ends.

Then . . . Hibbo comes back, again he puts in a MOTM performance and warraya Know ? we win again . . .but thats not enough for some people, apparently there`s a new tactic "astute" managers are using against Everton, it entails letting Hibbert play better than everyone else . . because he can hurt them.

The only problem with this tactic is that every "astute manager"who employs it ends up losing the game

You couldnt make it up

Dave, your not reading the script. Your common sense and logic doesn't apply. BK, Moyes, Hibbo, Cahill and Ossie are all anti-christs who are holding this club back. It doesn't matter what they do, this rule is set in stone. Coleman on the other hand, is the saviour being stifled by the anti-christs. He has even been exiled for his sins...

And BK shot JFK. Fact. The evidence is locked in a vault in Kirkby, which was the real reason why he wanted to go there, as CTU were onto him...

Your naiveté is endearing Mr Wilson.

Imagine that you were an opposing manager coming to Goodison with a game plan of A) holding out for a draw and, ideally, B) a smash and grab win.

Your first job is to nullify Everton’s threats - and there are a lot of them: Saha and the Yak aren’t exactly on fire, but you wouldn’t want to be giving them too many chances. You’ve got Cahill arriving late for set-pieces and crosses. You’ll have to stamp out Arteta’s artistry, not to mention dealing with Pienaar and Baines linking up on the left. Bilyaletdinov is still settling in but, on his day, can be devastating. Fellaini & Rodwell can burst through the middle, whilst Osman buzzes around the edge of the box linking play.

Hibbert? He’s made well over 200 first team appearances, has never scored a goal and over the course of his career has probably contributed to more goalscoring opportunities in our box than he has at the other end. Compared to the other guys, the threat that he poses is negligible. Any smart manager would quite happily allow him possession if it gave them the opportunity to, for example, mark Arteta out of the game.

The fact that he’s a liability that the opposition have recently allowed more time on the ball doesn’t hide the fact that he’s a liability.

Dave, your support for Hibbert is admirable but your logic is selective. Hibbert is not selected for the Arsenal away match and we win 10 and draw 4 of the next 18 games? What does that prove? No, exactly .... nothing.

Most of us want desperately for Tony to succeed but making out, despite his much improved performances, that he was the difference is a bit rich! I DO believe that teams concentrate their resources down our left hand side and leave Hibbert more space as a consequence, knowing that he is never going to be as effective or dangerous as Baines.

Given our over-reliance on the left wing to attack, we do need to counter-balance this with a marauding right full back. Sadly, Tony, for all his defensive qualities, has neither the ball control nor confidence to effectively take up the mantle.

Calm down, calm down... remember just what it was... end of term; party time.

We couldn't go up a place, we couldn't go down a place... so the £500k per place prize money was a done deal.

Don't you think that Mr Cautious dependable dour defensive Moyes (also it seems to me a bit old fashioned in the nicest way) did what he wouldn't usually do (as it is his end of term as well) and said go out and enjoy yourselves.

So, deep down, as most defenders want to be forwards (especially big centre forwards eh Mr Southall?)... All Hibbo did was take his desk out into the sunny playground and do his work there and probably had a plate, knife fork and spoon with his name on for the cakes and jelly after as well.

END OF TERM, a one-off, get over it.

"Your naiveté is endearing, Mr Wilson."

And you`re stupidity is staggering Mr Doyle.

If you knew the game, you`d know how difficult it is to get your own players on the ball, never mind select which of the opposition you want to have it. If that was the case they`d all want Neville and Jagielka in possession all the time. Not just because they are the chief hoofball culprits, but because they have proven on more than one occasion that they are more of a threat to our goal than they have ever been to the oppositions.

The Yak, Fellaini, Bily and Cahill didn't start yesterday, so trust me when I tell you, Pompey did not line up worrying about any of them

Ray; I`m not blinded by loyalty, I know Hibbo's limitations, I`ve been driven mad by him enough times.

But I dislike... no, I fucken hate the reluctance even refusal of a section of Evertonians who see penalties he didnt give away, and red cards he never recieved, to give him a little credit when he plays well.

I don't make out that Hibbo's presence is the reason we win, I just present the facts and let people who say we are a worse side when he plays draw their own conclusions.

One more thing, Ray, if you watched yesterday's game, Big Vic and Pienaar swapped places a few times, something Moyes's teams do on a regular basis, which kinda blows your theory about which wing to concentrate on out of the window.

Baines does have a few assists but how many are from dead ball situations taken from the RIGHT hand side?

Still guys, You`ve at least shown how to beat Man U, or Liverpool . . . . we just make sure Gary Neville or Lucas get the ball all the time.

Like I said, you could not make it up.

No that's not what I`m saying — although defensively it would be far more effective.

What I`m saying is if Pienaar swaps wings regularly — which he does, virtually every match — why would the opposition concentrate only on the left as you suggest?

Besides costing us the game by showing Stoke too much respect.

Let's see...

“If you knew the game you`d know how difficult it is to get your own players on the ball, never mind select which of the opposition you want to have it”

My shifts meant that I couldn’t get to the game yesterday, so I listened to the game on (Portsmouth based Quay) radio then watched extended highlights later. Even the heavily biased radio commentators noticed how much space Hibbert was ALLOWED.

“If that was the case they`d all want Neville and Jagielka in possession all the time. Not just because they are the chief hoofball culprits”

Jagielka had a 100% pass completion rate against Portsmouth (35/35). So did Distin & Rodwell for that matter. Hibbert, not so much.

“The Yak, Fellaini, Bily and Cahill didnt start yesterday, so trust me when I tell you, Pompey did not line up worrying about any of them”

Obviously Fellaini was never going to be an issue yesterday and, as it happened, none of the other players started either (not that Portsmouth would have known when then submitted their teamsheet or worked on their tactics) but the point’s still valid: the likes of Saha, Yakubu, Fellaini, Arteta, Baines, Pienaar etc. will scare the hell out of the opposition managers, who will instruct their sides on how to minimise the risk that they pose. There’s not a manager on the planet who fears Hibbert. If they discuss him, it’s only to highlight how to exploit his weaknesses.

“If you watched yesterday's game, Big Vic and Pienaar swapped places a few times, something Moyes's teams do on a regular basis, which kinda blows your theory about which wing to concentrate on out of the window”

Not really, no. Our play down the left-hand side has been highly productive all season, and last. Our play down the right has paled by comparison, which is why so may fans see a right winger (or right sided midfielder) and / or a new right back as a priority in the summer.

Aiden, you answered the point for me. Irrespective of which side Pienaar is playing on, Baines would never be given as much space as Hibbert was. Managers realise where the threat comes from.

Hibbo's a trier, but football left him behind. He's still pretty useful for negating a left winger / wide midfielder but any fullback playing for a team with Champion's League aspirations needs to have more to their game than that.
Dave Wilson

Oh I seeeee... that explains it.

When Baines goes down the flank he's created space; when Hibbert goes down his side, it's because he's been ALLOWED too... and when he beat a man, the man was only PRETENDING to break his neck to get back, it was part of the tactic... That explains the recent performances against Fulham, Blackburn too, when many people (including the TW columnist) saw what I saw, MotM performances from TH.

Big Sam tactically astute, eh? Who`d have thought it? And here's me thinking there was a reluctance by certain sections of our crowd to give TH any credit at all

I'm out, this is just about as stupid as it gets.

And I forgot to mention the one time that he ran at the opposition defenders too!! OK I was a bit tongue in cheek when I touted Hibbo as our new winger. BUT he has shown potential and can only get better with more confidence in those sort of positions. I think I'd limit him though to only doing it against lower opposition and not trying to run at the likes of Vidic.

As another poster mentioned, if it was one of our Academy players that had put that performance in, there'd have been demands that he instantly be first choice starter but because it was Hibbert nobody wants to give the lad any praise.

Sorry to be so late in responding to this thread but have to agree that Hibbert played really well and certainly showed better than Neville has done for months. The reason he got forward was that he skinned his marker a few times and on other occasions he had space to advance. In both cases he can only play against what Average Grant put out.

I'd personally love him to have scored more for his own sake as he's been a good defender let down back lack of decent cover in front of him so many times. I still rate his defensive abilities above Neville's too. Give the lad the credit he deserves.
