So what is the purpose of this thread then?
To once again discuss the good and bad about our Russian winger?
To admire the fantastic goal he scored? or
To have a laugh about his surname which I now find quite easy to pronounce?

it's

Bil-ya-let-din-ov

But I agree with you — it should be easy once you break it down.

While we're at it, hands up who still can't spell Pienaar? [Damn, I gave that one away]

As a pedant who has worked in Russia for 4 years, I can tell you that it's actually pronounced like this:

Bilya-let DEEN ov

with the let being very softly pronounced

Doesn't really matter though, does it...

He was interviewed on Everton TV when he came and said his name was pronounced as Tom Wellings gives it.

I don't suppose it's the only foreign footballer's name that gets pronounced not quite correctly, though.

Christopher, actually, somebody argued that point with me about a year/18 months back. The "living legend" claim of course not the DA v JA argument. It was a sort of side issue on a thread that never really took off but thanks for re-inforcing my memory of Kevin as a great player.

It's spelled "Bilyaletdinov", but it's pronounced "Throat-Warbler Mangrove" ..... I believe.

My wife caught a glimpse of the back of Bily's shirt while I was watching match of the day, and asked me in all seriousness:

"Is his name Ballykissangel?"

She also thinks the one with the big hairdoo is called Felatio.

I've been ok with Bilyaletdinov but I still struggle with Lukas Jutkieftreyuewuwurtwitz.

Played football with a lad of Hungarian decent the other week, when we had to give the goalscoreres names at the end he ended up just writing it down,
HRZCHRZYN, was his name, not a bloody vowel in sight. Pronounced "her-cher-shin" apparently.

My personal favourite "foreign" names are:-
+ Young Swedish player, Pissflapsen (very good around the box apparently)
+ Serbian lad, Onyabakyavic (goes down easily by reports).
