Get Arteta signed up... then, if Pienaar wants to fuck off, cash in before it's to late. If he can't see the potential and ambition before the wedge, so be it. He isn't worth any more than Rodwell in my books, and I can't believe he is being offered less.

Once Arteta, then make a move with Pienaar. Sign him or end negotiations and let him play out his contract. Do this in the most upbeat manner, "Hate to lose him". "Want only the best for Steven". "God-willing".
That makes next season Pienaar's showcase to European pro football. I have to believe he'll be highly motivated.

I'm sure his girlfriend is down the Bentley shop already. Congratulations, Jack, I hope you can fulfill your potential over the next 5 years with us. Mind you, you've still got a lot to prove even to get into the Everton team the way we are playing, but an axis of Fellaini, Arteta and Rodwell will surely be the future...

Steady on, now... don't get too excited! Didn't Rooney sign a five-year deal just before he wept to Kenwright to let him go? Didn't Lescott sign a deal just before he went to the other end of the M62?
Contracts are next to worthless in this day and age. It may put suitors off for a year or so because it would be asking too much for a player to leave a club at this stage... but don't assume he's here for the next five years yet!

It sets me wondering whether we ever include “sell on” fees in these sorts of contract renewals along the lines of, ‘if someone offers £50 million, the club has to allow them permission to talk to the player.’ You hear about these sorts of clauses with the likes of Moutinho.
Whilst you can never guarantee to keep any player out of the clutches of a huge offer, such a clause might prevent some of the silly, low, trial-balloon offers which do nothing other than unsettle players.

Why would there be a buy out clause? They have them in Spain to fulfill legal requirements, they are made so high as to make them redundant. The press here only use them to try and make juicy headlines '67million rated X '

Great news, utterly delighted he has signed this new deal. Now we can barter an extra four or five million from Chelsea or Man U this summer... (Note: I'm only joking, I'm not THAT cynical...)

The difference between Rooney, Lescott and Rodwell is their behaviour towards the club. Rodwell was keen to stress that he was "made up" and “delighted to sign" a new deal. The difference between this statement and Rooney’s post World Cup silence or Lescott’s "I’m an Everton player until I'm told otherwise" is deafening.

Liam, I am not talking about Rooney or Lescott at the time they were angling for a move.... I am merely suggesting that the pleasure they both expressed at signing contracts (do I remember Rooney saying that playing professionally for Everton was all he ever wanted and that his ambition was to be the club captain?) did not mean a jot in the end did it?
Rodders does seem to be a decent lad and I do get the impression that at least for the moment he means what he says... just as the other two did. I sincerely hope he is still with us in five years but I am just advising caution, that's all!
