Johnny Heitinga

Comments (69)

I don't know if this was mentioned on here the other day about Heitinga talking about 'big club' Manchester City, but he has gone one further today with the following quote:

"I have no next employer in my head, but I would still like to reach the top. The chance that I could go to Liverpool is certainly very small, but joining another English club seems nice and if Barcelona comes, I'd go on a bicycle with a large flag to get there. There is a return to Ajax also in the planning, but it should be no farewell tour. I would come back to win some more, otherwise it makes no sense."

Seriously, somebody needs to tell this dickhead to shut the fuck up.

I have (had) high hopes for Johnny, I like the way he plays and he looks a real find, potential hero status, future captain.

This type of shit really gets on my fucking nerves, it makes a mockery of the club if you ask me, having its best players trying to engineer moves to all and sundry.

I don't think I'll be cheering his name quite as loudly next season. Shame.

Nothing to add to that, Franny. I think you express reasonable sentiments about Heitinga's rather crass candour. The Dutch are renowned for their candour and matter-of-factness, but young Johnny seems to be pushing the boundaries rather too far.

Yes, shut the fuck up young man, at least while you're here.

Friday 14 May 2010... EFC Official website..."I am really looking forward to next season at Everton"..."I am proud now to be a true Evertonian"...

How things change in a short space of time in football nowadays... Do they think people read what they say or do they care anyway?

Incidentally, Arteta says about the same time: "I would be happy to end my career at Everton"... Don't hold your breath!

As I said in the previous Heitinga thread, I think he should be transfer-listed immediately. Complete disrespect to Everton and the fans.

But my other point: who the fuck does he think he is with talk of Barcelona? Frankly, Johnny, you're not even nearly that good. You'll do well to get in our first team if everyone's fit next season.

Stick him on the transfer list and see who comes along willing to him pay £60k a week. Twat.

Presuming the quote is correct, then I hope Moyes takes action. Would be great if we could immediately transfer list these types but realise that this is unrealistic. He may be all well and good when things are going well, but will be missing the necessary fight — looking for their move to a bigger club — when things get tough.

What constitutues a bigger club is a debate that goes on and on, but his alarming lack of knowledge in defining a fly-by-night rich club as a big club is alarming. Even if these are his true thoughts, he should at least have respect for the club and supporters by not showering us with this shite.

If these comments are true than I for one will wince every time I see the him in a blue shirt. His maverick, mad dog style always had a ring of trouble maker about him... even looks like Bellamy.

In terms of money, we are not a 'big club'; however, as City proved, that can change overnight. In terms of history, there are few bigger and that is set over generations. Johnny who?

He should be immediately transferred. I think it's about time Moyes puts his foot down and states that this club isn't a stepping stone — it's a club to be proud of playing for.

The only people that are more fickle than footballers are the fans!

"Heitinga needs us much more than we need him"

"Johnny, you're not even nearly that good. You'll do well to get in our first team if everyone's fit next season"

And these are from the people who, a couple of weeks ago, were having him as Player of the Season and the next club captain.

All footballers are mercenaries. All of them.

Those quotes were hardly "Come and get me out of this hell hole" are they??

Get over it, whilst he is playing he is good and when the time comes, he will leave us and we'll probably get more than the £6m we paid for him.

I've taken it all with a pinch of salt, I think it's bollox, just some journo stirring. I mean, like Karl as pointed out, he said what he did about Everton and I saw on SSN when he was at some autograph signing thingy he said he's happy at us and thinks we will have a beautiful season next year.

I'm guessing Heitinga never said anything about the City bollocks and, when it came out, City weren't even interested and denied it all, some journo covering his back has brought some more shit out.

Heitinga will be ambitious and want to play at the top level but I'm sure he would give clubs that he's signed for a chance to succeed and not jump ship after one season. I mean if he wanted quick success then why did he leave Atletico Madrid in the first place, they were in the CL and regular contenders for qualifying for it but if he was after winning league titles and things at this stage of his career then why didn't he go to another club than us who do have that chance?

Until I actually see Heitinga say on TV or EvertonTV that he wants to better himself and leave then I won't believe the shite in the papers or on the net, it is probably all made up these supposed quotes.

I mean at this stage of a season, at World Cup time, what player talks about their future? They all want to focus on the job in hand... so, if any journo did ask questions like that, I'm sure they will've been told they will only answer questions concerning the World Cup.

I was incredibly disappointed with Jonny's comments (assuming they're authenticated) but the one thing I think it proves quite how important European football is to players.

Many of us have ridiculed the Europa League and criticised the impact it has on our league position. There was a consensus that we can have a right good go at the Top 4 by improving our squad and not having to stretch it to the limits for little reward next season.

However, I think missing out on our jolly European jaunts could prove disastrous. Heitinga is being paid a handsome sum by EFC so I truly don't believe his motives are totally financial.

Will someone tell me the difference between this and Ronaldo saying he wants to join Real Madrid prior to joining them (over a season before actually).

Every player (employee of any company) wants more money and to be more succesful. I admit he should have kept his big gob shut but I'd rather know these things from players than not.

If he doesn't want to stay and has let me know then when he gets sold this summer it wont be a shock.

Also this is something for Moyes to deal with and I'm sure he will do as a priority.

We all know our club is built on respect for each other, I don't expect him to be with us next season. we have ample cover anyway... look at it this way...

Cover in central defence: Yobo, Distin, Jags, Duffy (Emergency — Neville, Hibbert)... but we do need to sign a centre half if possible (but not a priority).

Cover at Right Back (where he was crap anyway): Neville, Hibbert, Coleman.

Cover in defensive midfield (I don't think he would have started next season anyway): Fellaini, Rodwell, Neville, (Emergency — Arteta, Yobo)

Sell him if its true

Totally agree with Ben - our failure to get into Europe could possibly haunt us as I suspect Heitinga, Pienaar and just possibly Arteta would jump to a club involved in Europe next season.

What we must do if we want to keep these lads (and possibly also a few more) is to get into the CL by the 2011-12 season — note: CL... not the Europa Cup — it won't do.

I understand Everton fans being upset hearing one of our players touting for offers in public – it is unprofessional and demonstrates a lack of respect. But, he did the job he was paid to do he operated like a professional last season with some outstanding performances; although in that time he did not once come out and proclaim his desire to staying saying "OHHH I fucking love this club, the fans and want to stay forever" ..he didn't say it because he doesn't feel it.

The simple truth is he only came because of a payrise and the chance to play Europa League footie while putting himself in the shop windows for “Bigger clubs” – not City.

Sadly for us he doesn't love Everton the way you and I do, so I don't understand why people are surprised why he is trying to attract offers. We won't be playing in the Europe and he wants to do one. This is a consequence of finishing 8th – the mercenaries want out – so let them... just don’t take it personally when their true characters are revealed.

Sounds bollocks to me. What has the journo asked him, would you leave Everton for Barcelona? Well obviously the answer will be yes. I would walk there too if I were him.

Heitinga doesn't owe us anything, the same as Arteta or Pienaar. we haven't saved them and their families from the workhouse or their souls from eternal damnation! They repay us with the football and an inflated sell-on price.

If I were playing for, say Atletico Madrid and I am asked would I fancy a move to Chelsea or Inter then the answer is pretty obvious. Its the same for Heitinga. I don't think he has stated he wants to go, just that hypothetically if a big club come in for him, he would be interested.

Do you think this would be any different were it Milner, Zamora, Darren Bent etc. We know it isn't for Fabregas.

I'm just going to copy and paste what I put in the other thread:

If this quote is actually genuine, Heitinga should be shown the door.

Of course you expect players to want to go to City at the moment, but you don't come out and say it, and you don't refer to them as a bigger club. That kind of disrespect towards a club like Everton cannot be tolerated.

Can you imagine Alex Ferguson putting up with that? Moyes should tell Heitinga that he's transfer listed and he can look forward to playing in the reserves on his return from the World Cup.

Decent player but easily replaceable.

And Johnny, if you see Joleon at the World Cup, ask him how it worked out for him. Oh, what's that?

----------------

And in response to someone:

We're upset because he shouldn't come out and say it. At the risk of repeating myself, a comment like that from Heitinga shows massive disrespect to Everton. Imagine if all our players just openly stated to the press "Yeah I'm contracted at Everton for a few years but I'm just waiting till a big club like Man City come calling and then obviously I'll be straight out the door". I honestly don't see how people are okay with his comments.

-------------------

I appreciate that he is not committed to Everton as we are, but he has a contract with Everton, and if he wants to move he should put in a transfer request, not make cheap little comments to journalists – particularly not mentioning his current team's arch rivals as a possible destination. He has shown no class, and complete disrespect to Everton.

(Also, having never sang his praises on here, I think calls of "fickle" are a little unfair.)

Oh, and by the way, sack Moyes while you're at it too. Hasn't he said he would like to manage Celtic one day...?

In the Voetbalzone article quoted above (which was published in early May) Heitinga is saying that he thinks Everton will catch up with the Premier League elite next year if we can manage to keep our squad together. Doesn't sound like he's planning on leaving to me!

A reliable over reaction. We simply don't know what's happened. If it's exactly as reported, then it's very disappointing, but Heitinga's talking about his next club, not next season. This could be in three years time following a career defining, legendary Everton career encompassing the 2011 title and a couple of FA Cups.

He's 26, and seems to be idly speculating about the next 6-8 years of his career. It would be very surprising if he spent all of it with Everton.

So two bits of advice from me: yes, Johnny, shut the fuck up.

And Everton fans: don't assume the very worst in any situation.

Paul (11); I think it's bollocks mate, cos it just doesn't make sense. Yeah, he is ambitious like any good player is... but why would Heitinga give up what he had at Atletico Madrid to come to us, a club only in the Europa League?

He has to take a pay cut and see that a couple of our key players will be out injured for most parts of the season and that we need to bed in our new, late signings and that that could cause us to start slow, like we did, and then only give us one season, one chance to be a success like he expects, it just doesn't add up. He doesn't seem to be the type of lad that gives up so easily on clubs who don't get instant success, he gave Atletico Madrid the chance so I'm sure he would us too.

Like I said before, until I actually see it from the horse's mouth then I'll take it with a pinch of salt during this silly season.

Charlie (14), the difference with Heitinga and Ronaldo is that Real Madrid were genuinely interested in Ronaldo, came out and said so, and lodged a bid, which lead Ronaldo to say, on camera, that he would like to join Real Madrid, it is his dream to one day play for Real Madrid.

There's been no genuine interest of note thus far in Heitinga, in the papers or on the net or on SSN or whereever else, from clubs. When it was reported City were interested, they denied it outright but my point is, without any interest, where have these questions come from? What has lead these journos to ask him about his future if there's nothing flying around that clubs are looking to prise him away from us this summer?!

How can people ask questions without substance? Fair enough if there asking him who is his dream team and who would he love to play for, who's his dream club... then fine, everyone's got a club they'd give anything to play for... but how can they ask him something that isnt there?

All he's done IMO is he has been asked the question, Who's your dream club? Who would you love to play for if you had the chance? And he's answered Barcelona and that website or paper has twisted it to fuck and made him out to say he would leave us to go to so and so cos he's very ambitious and he wouldn't think twice about leaving us if someone bigger came in.

Let's just all wait to see if he does actually say anything after the World Cup or when he comes back for pre-season to pass judgement.

Translation taken from NSNO post

The dream scenario for the career of Heitinga can thus be written out: the World Cup win with Orange, a European club Everton through and eventually reach again return to Ajax. "I have no next employer in my head, but I would still reach the top," said Heitinga, whose contract at Goodison Park until 2014 runs. "The chance that I go to Liverpool is certainly very small, but an English club seems nice. And when Barcelona comes, I'll go on a bicycle with a large flag past. Then there is a return to Ajax in the planning, but it should be no farewell tour. I just came back to win some more, otherwise it makes no sense. ” Ajax must have a number of years but reported.

He also says earlier in the artcle

"Heitinga knows what he is talking about, because he's after the first year in England with empty hands. The Carling Cup and FA Cup were not for The Toffees paid, the competition was the goal (achieving European football) is not met. This was mainly due to the poor first half of the season.

"We were initially very much problems with injuries that were not used. Sometimes we were but eight or nine men on the field, with some promises. In December, we are still hooked up, but we could not achieve European football," said Heitinga, who this season has not even released in Europe. Because he played for Atletico Madrid all matches in the preliminary round of the Champions League, he was at the Europa League campaign at Everton not.

His former employer Atlético reached the final of the tournament. "A remarkable achievement," says Heitinga. "I think they have a total of fourteen European games and won only two, but they are well in the final. Sorry if I ever got from my departure? Absolutely not, because I'm really enjoying myself at Everton. In hindsight, I might be better for Britain right to choose, but I had the experience in Spain do not want to miss. The coach who took me (Javier Aguirre, ed) was quickly dismissed and his successor (Abel Resino) just put me on the right back position. ” I certainly was not going to the rest of my life right back to play, so I left for Everton. "
. At Goodison Park Heitinga was recruited to replace Joleon Lescott, who the big money from Manchester City chose, but after the winter break, the Dutchman played mainly in midfield. "I like to play in central defense, left or right I do not care, or the item back in the midfield," said Heitinga about.

"I have no preference between these two positions and not find it annoying that I must switch between these positions, you develop yourself as a football through. For next season, I think Everton to catch up with the teams from the second tier, where we managed to keep team together. Louis Saha hear in my mind is still home with Manchester United, Steven Pienaar, the level of a top club and guys like Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta are also very good players. How big is the difference between Ajax and Everton? I do not know, then we should play against each other."

And to think some fans were suggesting that Heitinga was a future Everton Captain. That's laughable now.

I suggest Heitinga gets on that bike with his flag and pisses off to Barcelona.

I'll never cheer this mercenary again.

Thanks for that, Bradley, gives it a much rounder context.

Dick, had you read Bradley's post before you wrote that? I ask because, in that whole context it certainly doesn't seem so bad, and he is far more positive about being an Everton player than the 'headline' quotations suggest.

Where is he disloyal? Well, when he says he wants to reach the top. We'll just have to make sure we reach the top with him.

Sounds like he's laughing off speculation of a move to either Barcelona or Liverpool. My interpretation is that he is happy at Everton and thinks the team can go places. The interview is mostly about why he chose England over Spain.

It is also an interview from 6 May, being rehashed to fill space in the papers before the World Cup. Most World Cup managers won't allow their players to talk about their clubs... the sooner the tournament starts, the better.

What a prick. I'd sell him if he's going to disrespect us like that, it's not as if we'd miss him now Jags is back... and we were doing fine before he came along...

Firstly, without doubt he claimed he would get on a bike with a flag to join Barcelona.

Then, even worse, he confirmed he would be interested in a move to Liverpool.

I don't need to read anymore and I dont' care about the context. These comments are unforgiveable.

Get this player out of Everton. I'll buy him his bike and flag.

Dick - where does it say he is interested in going to the RS?

The 'loose' Google translation says that the chance of going to Liverpool is small.

Which probably in Dutch was 'there is no chance of me going to Liverpool'

Much ado about nothing, me thinks.

Christ, why not take what you've written on here, put it into Google or Yahoo, translate it into Dutch, then back to English in the other... Does it make complete sense?

Look at the translated article... Most of the negatives are written for him by the author. The bits in quotes, what he actually is supposed to have said himself in Dutch, aren't really bad. He wants to win things and play European football... He believes that that can be done here, and points to injuries at the beginning of the season.

if you're really going to take translated text literally, do you think Saha is spitting venom because JH said his mind is in Manchester?! What, Saha wants to go back there? He took too many drugs there and left his mind somewhere in Manchester? Or presumably he means Saha has a winning mentality, gained from playing at Man U.

And just in case, I'm not fucking saying Saha (Simon, take four) has ever taken drugs... Just in case that becomes the next thing for us fans to leap on and beaten our own players...

I can read Dutch and really this is blown out of all proportions.

The interview is quite long and only in the last three or four lines, his future as a club player is discussed. At that time he has already stated that he's looking forward to next season as Everton will be pushing for Europe with the class of Saha, Pienaar, Cahill and Arteta. That's not really a statement from someone looking to make a move. NOWHERE in the article is there any speculation about an imminent move, they are just discussing his distant future.

Dick Anderson, if you're serious than sorry to say so, but you're a twat. Heitinga is actually pointing out that he WON'T go to Liverpool. And like someone says above, he is just jokingly reacting on the Barcelona matter, I read it as "Barcelona, hah, I wish but I'm not good enough". Just tongue in cheek small talk.

I do understand that most of you can't read Dutch but I read the whole article and really I do not get the feeling he is looking to make a move, he is actually just looking forward to the WC AND next season AT EVERTON. At the end he just reacts to questions from the journalist and he is obviously answering jokingly.

Thanks to Erik for providing the word of sanity to this crazy thread.

Dick Anderson, I know it's going to be hard for you to backtrack, but perhaps you should step away from the keyboard for a minute and consider the possibility that you really have got the wrong end of this particular stick.

Let me know when you want me to remove your ridiculous posts. You are not alone, so that offer is open to anyone who thinks they may have over-reacted just a tad.

Suspect, judging by all the so-called big clubs mentioned and knowing the Dutch sense of humour — plus the fact that he's currentlly locked away in a training camp... he's taking the piss... out of the media.

THIS IS A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS!

Michael Kenrick - you're really telling someone else to step away from the keyboard for a minute? That's classic.

Now I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I am prepared to believe that these quotes are taken out of context, or are not authentic. But currently I have no reason to believe that is the case.

And just to clarify, this is the quote I am annoyed with:

"City have ambitions and I am always looking to move to a bigger club".

That quote can be found here:

http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/10/05/29/manual_163135.html&TEAMHD=soccer

or similar here:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1282520/Everton-defender-John-Heitinga-summers-Lescott-Manchester-City-make-approach.html?ITO=1490

So Mr Kenrick (particularly), and others, are you happy with this quote?

Or should we run the quote through Google translator until it looks like its harmless?

You're seriously happy that Heitinga has publicly said that City are a bigger club and that he is always looking to move to a bigger club?

Max; you're another who's made some very strong statements on here and so I can understand it is going to be hard for you to backtrack. I would just advise you to read Erik's post very slowly and think about exactly what he is saying.

I've worked with Dutch people, and they do have a rather odd way of expressing themselves. And Dutch is a weird language that I suspect is not so easy to translate, at least not with all its cultural subtleties intact.

So, unless Dutch is your mother tongue (which I doubt ) and unless you are able to understand every nuance of the original interview (which I also doubt), I merely suggest a little bit of circumspection before jumping off the deep end and hanging out to dry one of our better players.

So Eric and Michael providing genuine perspective; we're in agreement — Moyes's retaining the lot because they don't want to go.

We all want to agree with MIchael Lynch's declaration. "If we can keep hold of our best players, we are going to roll some fucking heads next season. COYB".

Lynch has got it!! EFC (expect Donovan back) rolls next season. At last! The other team has a problem.

Max, the quotes from Daily Mail and Sporting Life will be taken from the same interview Eric read? However, the difference is these media outlets want to make a story, take quotes out of perspective and context.

Erik provod a decent (one assumes, I did not learn much Dutch during my time in Amsterdam) summary of the article.

Why overreact and demand that Heitinga go? Don't you want him to stay? He's bloody good, I do.

Remember, if someone says 'If city was an option and offered for you to sign a massive contract with them?' a response of "Well they are a big club, I would always consider moving to a big club and winning things" isn't exactly saying "Yes, where's my agent, pack my bags, I'm off!"

Don't believe anything you read in the papers.

I used to work beside a load of Dutch (for Shell) and, while this is a bit of a sweeping generalisation, they believe in calling a spade a spade. None of our Anglo-Saxon equivocation, beating around the bush or engaging in politeness for reasons of diplomacy.

Therefore, I'm not in the least bit surprised to see this type of quote attributed to Johnny. I voted for him as my player of last season — he's tough, can play a bit and always seems to give 100%

All the folks talking about "binning this mercenary" really must be living in cloud cuckoo land! What sort of Corinthian utopia do you mistake the modern Premier League for??!

As long as Heitinga keeps on producing the goods as well as he did every time he took the field last season, he can dream of getting chauffeured to sign for Barca in a limo driven by Davie Moyes for all I care......

I don't think people should get so annoyed by this stuff. I mean, the sort of sentiments he is expressing now were probably in his mind throughout last season... yet he still performed very well. Similarly, Pienaar battled like hell in every game but clearly had his contract and next move working away in the background.

As long as they're on the pitch giving 100% then I'll support them. I'm not so naive as to think they will only play well if they are besotted with the club; and it's been a long time that I've believed the player/supporter relationship means anything to these guys.

One last question... who, in their current job, would tell their boss that they loved the place and would never leave? I certainly wouldn't (even if I did) - I want them to think I am open to possibilities elsewhere so they have to pay me market value to stay.
