Samba Star

Well, not exactly... but believe we must sign another defender – even if Yobo stays. Not only do we need more bodies in the squad in this position but we need somebody challenging to start next to Jags. Perhaps Duffy but probably too inexperienced at present. I don’t rate Distin highly and I think we have a gaping hole in central defence when he plays.
I would like us to sign someone who takes no prisoners, i.e. a Vidic / Carvalleo type player.
A realistic target would be Samba and he would compliment our team and this would also assist in having cover for Baines, as we only have Neville at present. The signing would free up Distin to play there if Baines got injured.

Given how he appeared to play for large parts of last season, maybe offer £2 or £3 mill for Lescott!!

I can't disagree more on Distin. In the second half of last season he was immense. By far our best defender last year.
Distin really did get better as the season wore on after a shaky start that had me questioning the wisdom of slashing £6M out on a 31-year-old defender.
I'm comfortable enough with him in central defence now and am not convinced that a Heitinga-Jagielka partnership will have enough height to be a long-term solution.
If Yobo goes — I've always liked him but he seems to have lost the faith of his manager and the fans — we should be looking at a top class replacement or hot young prospect, though.
Samba!?! A Neanderthal hoofballer? For ANY position in the team, I want solely proper footballers. Someone who won't just kick the ball into Row Z or hoof it to hell every chance he gets.
He is a piss poor ale house defender!!
I still think Heitinga and Jagielka could work as a partnership. Distin has 2 or 3 seasons left in him at the top level and Yobo maybe 4 seasons.
We will have had Duffy come through by then, so I am not sure we NEED a replacement. It would be nice to add in that area, but what money we do have is needed to add pace down the flanks and goals up front.
I had high hopes for Distin but he has proved me wrong on every occasion. Terrible player and a liability. The error against Wolves I cant forget or forgive. A player of his age and experience should read the game a hell of a lot better. Get rid.
We are all entitled to our opinions but I would be horrified if we were to be even linked with a big oaf like Samba.
Distin did improve — but for me he always looked one wrong decision away from catastrophe... It's a pity because he's a player I always rated highly.
Certainly don't think replacing him with a worse player is the answer though. I'd like to see Heitinga and Jags given a go there despite the height reservations... Fellaini can take the big boys at set pieces.
I rated Distin too. Prior to watching him for us; shame. We have plenty of quality there though. Yobo provides decent cover. Duffy 4th choice.
I don't think Distin is all that bad. If nothing else, he is a physical presence in central defence. His distribution is pretty bush league, I think sometimes he forgets the midfield exists and he just hoofs it to the forward. He isn't perfect and we could probably do better but I don't see him as a liability. Jags and Heitinga to start in central midfield.
I think Samba is the sort of player we would have looked at years ago but not if we want to challenge for a Euro place, he's just a big yard dog with no passing range.
A lot of people I know don't rate Distin and I hear neagtive comments at the match, but I think he's not too bad at all. But it would be nice to have the luxury of having good solid players like Distin on the bench as cover.
As for Yobo, he's one of the most underrated players in our squad. He seems to have a reputation for having heart-in-mouth moment every so often but in the last couple of seasons they've been few and far between. Yobo is a solid, classy defender, who has the international experience which will aid us in any future European competition.
I agree on Yobo, Alex. I would be sad to see him leave. He is top class cover.
Sorry are we talking about the Blackburn Samba?
If so, good defender, plenty of height, scores a few goals.
You lot who want players who don't hoof it into Row Z... how about Per Krøldrup?
Jags and Johnny are two top class central defenders and definitely worth trying to see if they work as a partnership. If Distin and Yobo stay, they are both adequate back-ups. If Yobo leaves, then Duffy looks promising enough to step up as fourth choice. I don't think we need any more cover, there are more urgent positions needed.
What about Jack the Lad. I have seen many comments suggesting he will end up at the back , why not sooner rather than later. I think he can be a better Rio Ferdinand. We have enough quality for defensive midfield with Fellaini and JH, so groom Jack for centre half.
