All your worries about Rooney were for nothing. He was totally anonymous. Howard had a really good game though and he'd walk into that England team (if, y'know, he was actually English).

I'm finding the totally biased tv coverage amusing. Hesky was outstanding? Gerrard and Lampard were great in the middle? Rooney was troubling the American defence more and more as the game went on? Plenty of positives to take from the game? Bollocks.

Not a surprise result. We all knew Capello had picked some real poor players and it showed. Green was always gonna let us down — just seeing some of his mistakes for the Hammers last season was enough for me — and the rest, SWP, Heskey, Carragher, Crock King everyone agreed should never have gone.

They are playing an Italian style of play without the class to play their kind of counter-attack. Why can't Lennon or SWP get in good crosses after doing good work? Such a let-down. May have been just as well to have kept Walcott in the squad. They have a lot to prove in the remaining 2 games if we are to accept they will progress in the knockout stages.

Commentary was shite as expected — 1966 was forty odd years ago, Heskey had great game????? Carragher was impressive? Fucker should have got a second yellow for that shove off the ball, keep playing the slow bastard and they won't make it out of the group stage, never mind further.

Some poor defending from USA especially against Lennon but great keeping from Howard as expected, Heskey shot straight at him as did the midget version of Eddie Murphy, a good result which should have been better.

I had to explain to my Mrs and then let the replay show the supposed great save by Green for a certain second goal was more of a case of saved by the upright. A side with better finishing would spank that Engerland team.

Minutes after the final whistle, lo and behold a police car and van come tearing past my house running sirens and blue lights — I bet that was some Engerland knobheads spitting their dummies out somewhere.

4-4-2 we looked predictable and we would probably look a lot more comfortable and keep the ball better with 5 in midfield. Personally I thought that the USA gave a good account of themselves and were well worth the point, and doesn't Donovan deliver a great ball!

Thoroughly enjoyed the game. Classic England, absolutely terrible!!!

Of course you'll take it James, a well deserved point. But the fact that Tim Howard was disappointed that USA didn't win says it all. I reckon they will both still qualify though.

What amazes me is some of the quotes afterwards, such as "you can't criticise the goalkeeper" from DJ Smack, and pundits telling you that they (England) "played very well". Astonishing. I was watching it on RTE and the pundits, including Souness, absolutely slaughtered them.

I listened to most of the match on the radio coming home from the Rocky Horror Show, listening to the commentators saying how crap Heskey was, Chris Waddle was saying how Lennon was putting crosses into good areas but Heskey never got into the right sort of areas for a striker.

I got home for the last ten minutes, and then the 'round up', on ITV — Heskey was brilliant, ran the game, switched to Sky and got more of the same.

Does this mean the BBC actually got something right?

Blimey, I know that the English are blinkered when it comes to reporting on games, but it seems US fans do bias bigger and better!

I'm really not a fanatical nationalist at these events, but let's be realistic, on chances created or any other statistic, England should have won that game by a couple of goals. I think both teams played pretty well in what was easily the most exciting and attack-minded game of the cup so far (bar an Argentinian spell of pressure in the afternoon game most matches have been dire). I think that it's also fair to the say that the first half wasn't far off even and that on balance of play and chances 1-1 was probably not a massively unfair result, although if you look at the quality of chances maybe it should have been just 1-0, the US goal was a standard shot straight at the keeper and a total howler.

In the second half though there was only really one team who should have gone on to win. Maybe I was watching a different match, but what I saw was a succession of England attacks, some pretty incisive, let down by poor finishing and some oddly average set-piece play. Meanwhile the US seemed more content with the draw, soaking up pressure and trying to hit now and then on the break with pace, a tactic which only saw one decent chance, with a shot at the near post that Rob Green made a massive meal of, pushing onto the post (18 out of 20 Premier League keepers, including our own mighty Howard, would have dealt with that comfortably).

Ultimately, the difference between a draw and an England win came down to keepers; Howard was commanding and ever present (the goal he can't be blamed for), meanwhile Rob Green simply isn't good enough for this level of football and pressure, making a massive howler from a routine save and fortunately having precious few other shots to stop.

For me, Heskey was the Man of the Match for England, setting up the first and countless more opportunities and played the target/link-man perfectly with nice touches, power and quick thinking. His achilles heel is his finishing, so I wasn't surprised by the botched finish straight at Howard, but if he had a real eye for goal and a bit more pace then he'd be closer to Drogba class and wouldn't be playing from the bench at Villa. He has a job that he's very good at and he did it as far as I'm concerned, if Rooney (who is a world class player but I thought had a pretty average night) could stop running all over the fucking pitch and just try and stay up front for 5 minutes he might have had more chances too.

Other than the forwards, Stevie G Laa (we can mention his name now as he'll no longer be a RS come August) started really strongly but faded, Lampard wasn't too bad alongside him either (maybe it could work after all?), the attacking full-backs both played very well as I think did Lennon on the right, bar a slight reluctance to get a shot off. Milner was adequate and the centre-backs weren't exactly over-worked through most of the game. Where we really struggled though was on the left, I thought SWP was exceptionally poor with numerous examples of poor control and bad decision-making and ultimately I have no idea why Capello would have brought him on over Joe Cole, but there you go.

Ultimately I thought it was a pretty heartening performance from the boys in white, with some good passing at times and incisive attacks, certainly the most joined-up performance since we qualified and easily one of our better opening games at a tournament (people forget as the 2-4 years roll by, but we're usually awful at the start).

Likewise, the US can be proud of their showing, plenty of heart as you'd expect, some genuine attacking threat with pace, although notably not at the back, (Howard is going to be kept busy if they progress beyond the group stages) and a bit of tactical nous (in terms of sitting back in the second half and absorbing pressure and hitting on the break). I thought Landon was very good again, like an American Beckham with pace (please, please, please can we sign him in the summer) as were Howard, Dempsey and Demerit and no-one really had a stinker.

Obviously we'll need to see what the Slovenians and Algerians have got (I think both have the potential to be uncomfortable matches but should ultimately be beaten), but I wouldn't be surprised to see both of these teams going through if they approach the games in the same way as yesterday.

I found myself urging the Yanks on to get a winner... just can't stand the brainless footy we play - no matter who manages this "team" of individuals. Apart from the goal, Gerrard was shite, and lost the ball on countless occasions... how he can be regarded in the same bracket of world class midfielders such as Xavi, Iniesta etc!!! And he was turned inside out leading up to their goal. Pathetic. Carra was a disgrace, and should've been sent off. Lennon was scared of taking on the full back, Lampard was his usual watered-down version for England, and it was only really the two full backs, and Rooney that did ok.

USA played fairly well, but not great... and despite the howler from Green, the result was fair. Donovan's delivery was outstanding, the bald fella in the middle of the park had some great touches, and the pace and power of Altidore was immense... shame his finishing looks more like Heskey's!!!

I was at the game last night, and to be totally honest, I really really tried to support Ingerlund but found myself not caring at all after about 15 minutes.

In fact, I got some looks off some England nutters when I cheered after Tim got the MOM award. Same thing happened when I just couldn't help myself and screamed "Go on Landon lad" when he got outside the full back one time :-)

The atmosphere was brilliant tho' and there were Blues all over the place.

Anyway, after the usual jibes throughout the game about EFC having no players in the England squad, I ended up cheering the yanks!

One prick, I will even name him — Paul Wilson, stated at full volume that the three Liverpool players on show where the only ones trying!? WTF? Gerrard started ok but kept giving it away; Johnson was his usual headless self and Carragher tried to break someone's leg, should have been sent off, and had every other country laughing at us.

At least Landon was great and Tim was MotM. I was feeling more a yank at the end and proud of it... Come on Australia too!

I'm glad to see the tradition of indifference of Blues to England has [by and large] been maintained. But we were let down by the St George flag with 'EVERTON' across it which has been on various BBC news bulletins today !

I'm OK with England overall having more talent than the US and had the better of play (just barely, but the better). However, you twisted St. George worshipper, in the last few minutes of the game, it was the US stronger. The US!! And you sat watching, knowing it was so, and pleading the clock to tick faster.

If the US doesn't get out of the Group, it won't be the next 2 games. It will be we left 3 points laying on the ground Saturday, when all we had to do was bend over and pick them up.
