If Arteta does sign....

If Mr Mikel Arteta does sign the much mooted contract extension, I would suggest that that would make him the Matthew Le Tissier of Everton — i.e. a legend and a hero for all of us true believers.

C'mon, be a legend for us Mikey!!

I hope that you are right – on all counts i.e. that he does sign the new contract and that he does enhance his hero status. When I first heard that we had signed him – during the loan period in 2004-05 û I must confess I was not looking at it as being a signing of note – "just a pretty boy fancy dan midfielder" was what I thought. How wrong can you be!!!

Yes he has all the skill but as I found out he is very much a team player and as well as being one of the most skilful midfielders in the league – he also does a lot of work. When he has been given the captain's armband – it's not just been for show. I would think he would be an ideal sucessor to Phil Neville as Everton captain.

I think Arteta will sign a new deal. And I agree that he will become a legend. As good as a captain Neville is I think there are better players than him so Captain next year will be Arteta if he stays. And hopefully he can get us a trophy.

Good comparison. I've no doubt Arteta would walk into a better side but I think he will stay.

Hopefully. That would really send a message to other members of the squad.

I don't disagree that he would make a good captain, but I'd prefer not to put the responsibility on him. Let him lead by example and just play his game and let someone else do the leading, organising and talking.

Jags would be my choice.

If Arteta signs and the new Everton home shirt is good, I'll be getting Arteta's name and squad number on the back!

The only worry with Jags as captain is that if Coleman is trying to pass to (Defensive-mid) Neville and it gets intercepted, Arteta would shouted Coleman him for not passing to him while Jags would shout at Coleman for not hoofing it.

Unfortunately the captain would be the man to listen to.

(BTW I say this while at the same time acknowledging Jags is incredible and is our best defender for easily 10 years, he just hoofs too much, it's something Capello looked like he was trying to get him to stop doing....)

Arteta signed and Skipper. Nothing against the other names mentioned here. But we're going to be very good next season. With Mikey as Captain, he'll come up on TV more. Photogenic, handsome fellow and MY GOD, who's that woman on his arm???????

Wow, if you play for EFC, that's the kind of woman you attract? What is this Everton anyway? Oh and let's make sure to get him and his wife giving interviews on Spanish TV in America and its 10s of millions of daily viewers and soccer being A#1 in sports coverage on those stations. Lots of free EFC adverts in America.

Yes, like all the players mentioned but Arteta brings the most on and off the pitch.

James, Mrs Arteta is the former Miss Spain, Lorena Bornal, and an absolute honey, they have a little boy now too... can imagine how good that little lad is going to look like growing up!

Gavin - Agreed. By the way, a NYC newspaper had photos of all the hot wives/girlfriends of soccer players. LD's, Arteta's, and Bily's wife/girl photos had EFC well-represented. Of course, Ronaldo alone had more exes in there than any team had.

Anyway, aside from thinking Arteta would make a great Skipper, just suggesting another way for EFC to wave the colors internationally. In America, certainly.
