So we finally have a signing in this window! He's a 17 year old centre half. On loan...
Although I'm sure the lad is a great prospect I fail to see any point behind this move. There's currently no mention of an option to buy and he's unlikely to challenge for a first team slot. Can anybody shed any light on this one?

Of particular concern is the comment about not hoofing it. I'm hopeful Jags will take him under his wing and have the lad hoofing in the first team reall soon!!
That's three promising young centre halves. Will one get a chance instead of Hibbo if the worst happens (injury). Does this mean Heitinga is on his bike to Barca (or insert club here).

Its a strange one. If this lad is class, there is no way Sporting would want to get rid of him, considering he has been with them since he was 8 as well, and if they did want shut, they will probalby want decent money.

It says "Academy signing" on the OS so I would not expect to see him in the first team anytime this season. There's got to be something in it for us though ... perhaps first refusal and an agreed price for loan-to-perm?
This line is slightly cryptic, no? (Or am I reading too much into the wording?)

One could interpret that to mean he'll be using his time on Merseyside to get in front of the eyes of the England setup rather than play any meaningful part for us.

Of course, if he gets bitten by the "Everton bug" and he's good enough then he might get to stay long term.

Just what we need... a young center half! Mind you if Rodwell can play on the right, Moyes could always stick him on the left? NOT!!!
if he is not brought in with no intention to be in and around the 1st team squad why the fuck have we got him on loan for 6 months?? no one gets a loanee for the reserves or youth team! I would imagine its a 6 month trial so to speak with an option to buy if the player impresses Moyes.

Moyes needs to find a loan who can go straight into the first team and help (like Landon Donovan did last year) not waste time loaning a teenager who will sit in the reserves and then eventually return to Portugal.
Surely this loan deal is just temporary and a permanent move is just around the corner?

I cannot see the point unless it is hoped that he will be persuaded to sign a permanent deal for the future.
Remember Rodwell was a great prospect for centre back also and we have Duffy but it appears Moyes would sooner have Heitinga or Hibbert as the cover for Jags (or Distin).
Don't know why we made no bid for Wheater at the price -what a bargain Bolton got.

I heard that he'd been taken to Portugal as a small child by his British parents who have recently returned to the UK. Maybe he will want to return himself and this could be an opportunity for us to get ahead of the pack,so to speak.
Maybe Moyes has given up on this season, and i thinking of more long term signings, rather than a short term fix. I dont think Donovan would be good enough to get us into the European places. In Moyes I Trust!

One thing I can tell you: if we're skint, Sporting Lisbon are a UN relief case. I doubt it will take a lot of money to sign him on permanently if he's good enough.

A great move by Moyes. Dier is reportedly a hot prospect, we cannot lose on this one, the fact he has come on loan to US at not some other Premiership team is a coup, and he cannot fail to be impressed with Finch Farm. I know alot of posters are saying he wont help our situation now, but if we sign him and he becomes a future cente half, then it been a great move. We have some great youth potential at Everton, more than can be said for Chelsea and Liverpool who have aging squads and no real youth of any quality coming through. So come on boys lets not put a negative spin on this one !

Mountains and molehills. What's everyone so excited about. No cost involved, if he's great we get a foot in the door, if he's not goodbye in six months. No downside and potential upside, what's to worry about.
Obviously we are concentrating on the FA youth cup.

Regarding Moutinho he moved to Porto last season,but we should still be interested though as his goal tally so far this season is 0 !
There's not a hope in hell that we'll sign this fella permanently. With how highly rated he is, he'll cost more than our net spend in the next 20 transfer windows. He's got all the top clubs sniffing around him and already said he doesn't want to leave Lisbon.

There must be some point to it, but I just cant see what it is. A 17 year old centre half loaned to the academy? Are we even thread bare at that level? Even if we had signed him proper it would hardly be great news. Where the hel has that Mustafi lad gone, that was supposedly getting first team games in the german bundesliga before coming to us? Moyes puts Duffy on the bench, but then sticks Hibbert at centre back before him! Baxter doesnt seem to be progressing, so where are our young talented players?
Richard's got it spot on for me. Reading more into this lad, he is hot property at the moment, and would probalby command big money for Sporting.
Also, Man u, Arsenal and Spurs have all shown interest in the lad, so its not as if he's an unknown commodity.

Joao Moutinho joined Porto from Sporting Lisbon in the summer for something like £ 8,000. Porto are not known for selling their top players cheaply, so we might just as well forget about that one - that is, if we were still thinking about it.
Moutinho hasn't scored a single League goal for Porto all season, as pointed out above, but that's not really the point, as he's a good playmaker and has apparently been having a fine season.
