Match Summary

The original Everton won the historic first meeting with their Chilean namesakes to lift the inaugural Brotherhood Cup at Goodison Park.

After a goalless first half, Magaye Gueye's peach of a cross was headed into the top corner by Jermaine Beckford to hand Everton of Merseyside the lead.

And not long past the hour mark, Marouane Fellaini nodded down for Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and he rapped a low left-footed volley home to make it 2-0. The Blues looked sharp and confident and dominated proceedings to keep their 100% record in senior pre-season friendlies going.

David Moyes welcomed back Phil Jagielka who put rumours of a recurrence of his knee injury to bed by coming through 45 minutes unscathed. Also starting were Jan Mucha, Joseph Yobo, Steven Pienaar and striker Jermaine Beckford but while the Blues were dominant in the first half, they missed a handful of chances to take the lead, including when Tim Cahill headed off the crossbar.

The first goal duly arrived, though, after half time following the introduction of, among others, Marouane Fellaini, who made a welcome return to action after recocering from a serious ankle injury, and Magaye Gueye. The latter swung in a beautiful 51st-minute cross and Beckford rose unchallenged to plant a header into the top corner from about 12 yards out. It was a terrific striker's goal and bodes well for the Blues' aerial threat up front when he is in the team.

1-0 became 2-0 with 25 minutes to go when Fellaini nodded a corner back to Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and the Russiain did what he does best, planting a left-foot volley low past the 'keeper.

Fellaini appeared to have lost none of his coolness in possession and slick passing ability, offering hope that he can simply pick up the form he was in when Kyrgiakos messed up his ankle in the Anfield derby in February.

Indeed, there were some really pleasing displays all over the pitch. Seamus Coleman was, again, a constant delight bombing down the right, threatening to make something happen almost every time he got forward. He got behind the Chileans' defence on a number of occasions, a couple of times thanks to a lovely give-and-go to the byline.

Gueye might have rounded off a handsome win late when Leighton Baines turned his marker smartly in the area and laid the ball back to the Frenchman but Dalsasso in the CD Everton goal beat his left-footer away superbly.

Overall, a really satisfying performance that makes it look as though Everton's pre-season preparations are going very nicely indeed. In contrast to the disjointed displays against the MLS sides in America last year, Moyes's side look ready for the real business to start, with an exciting depth of talent in many areas of the team.

A word, in closing, of congratulations to John Shearon and the Ruleteros Society of whose tireless work forging links between the two Evertons over the years this friendly was a deserved culmination. It was no doubt a satisfying moment for "Chile John" to be standing on the pitch for the presentation of the Copa Hermanadad after all the work he and his colleagues put into badgering the Everton hierarchy into seeing this fixture come to fruition.

And credit, of course, goes to Everton FC and CD Everton for ultimately making it a reality and for listening to desires of their respective fans to see the two clubs plays each other for the first time since the Ruleteros' inception 101 years ago.
