Here's Collina explaining his decision to rule out Ferguson's goal in '05. Apparently someone other than Ferguson caused an infringement but I can't find any footage online ? Conspiracy!

It was Marcus Bent who was the "alleged" offender at the time but i've never heard from anyone who saw anything untoward at all.

Awful decision that cost us a goal, that would've take the tie towards extra time, but we still had to win the game.

We didn't lose the tie on that decision, we lost it by not investing in the squad and then losing the home leg 2-1.

He was paid off, we all know it, everyone in football with a brain knows it.

Uefa could not possibly have 5 teams from one country in the Champions League, so let's make sure little old Everton are unseeded, get the hardest possible draw (against a team that got all the way to the semi-finals that year) and just to make sure control the ref.

As you may have guessed it still pisses me off 6 years later!

In fairness to Collina didn't he let Kilbane stay on the field after a wild challenge when he was on a yellow card? And Moyes hauled him off?

Then again, it was Kilbane...

I wouldn't mind but it was Bent who was actually getting fouled.

He says Bent committed a foul against (can't remember or clearly hear the name in your footage Nick but it is at 3:20) and that was his assertion at the time, or at least soon after the match. The fact was every replay from every angle shows Bent was in actual fact wrestled to the floor from behind ? la Carragher on the far post.

Absolute travesty of justice and would at least be a little more palatable if he had the decency to say "I believed this to be the case but, after review and TV replays have given me better information, I got it the wrong way around and I apologise."

A ref who was seen as the best of his generation. Do we think he would of been payed off? At the end of his career. tarnishing his reputation.
Id like to think so, but perhaps just a bad decision?

Referee gets split decision wrong. I know it cost us possible champions league football, but seriously, is it worth carrying on getting ourselves so worked up on our shared sense of injustice?

Every fan of every team can point to criminal refereeing decisions, what's the point of dragging it up? What good can come from it? Let's focus on the positives, or us that not allowed in this site?

Another in a long line of piss poor decisions go against us in big games. It's what makes us so pessimistic.

My 12 year old daughter told me that it was not fair that her 10 year old brother had not had to wait as long as she had to see Everton in the European Cup - I told her that I had waited nearly 42 years.

We had tickets right behind the goal, about 5 rows from the back thanks to Charlie who lives in Madrid. We saw no foul at the time and no foul in the subsequent replays which it took me 5 years to bring myself to watch.

My summer holiday was planned around that game - my wife eventually worked out the late decision as to where we where holidaying thanks to her more savvy friends!

As Liam said, it didn't cost us the game but it cost us a chance of making a game of it.

My kids crowded around a local TV reporter after the game and I couldn't argue nor chastise her when my daughter pronounced to camera that Collina was a 'Bastardo'! (Fluent eh!)

And boy was it hot that night - still 25 degrees at the end of the game (midnight locally).

We all, well some of us, well just me. believe that the rs in 1969 sold their Shankly red souls to himself.

It was to late to stop our march to the title as we had too much momentum. But they got their first break with the Sandy Brown own goal a few days later and on and on it goes.

How many times have they spawned an incident ( and no decision ) a decision, a goal, a game, etc etc. I mean 0-3 down in the CL final, nobody gets out of that legally.

The list is too immense to post, even if I could remember them all.

But for every good luck there must be bad luck ( The Teela Brown effect )

No wonder they call us bitter, well I / we am / are...

But with damn good reason.

We all know something wasn't right about that match. UEFA certainly didn't want 5 English teams in the Champs league. The fact he resigned straight after the match was very strange indeed. Surely you would retire at the end of a season rather than the begining. One thing is for sure though, it could only happen to Everton.

Jamie #6....couldn't have put it better myself.

If you actually study the video Marcus Bent is the one being FOULED...not the other way round.

Liam I hear what you say but on the night if that CHEATING BALDY BASTARD had not denied us then I still believe to this day we would have won that game and gone thro....they were on the ropes and I truely believe that we would have scored again before the 90 minutes were up....they only scored their second cos we had pushed so many players forward looking for a goal to keep us in it..(those were the days eh)...probably shouldn't have bothered because that bent bastard would have disallowed ANY second goal we may have scored...as instructed by UEFA !!

If I recall correctly, at the time he officiated our match he was not allowed to referee Serie A games due his affiliation with General Motors. The suggestion was that he may show undue favouritism to the Italian team that they sponsored.

Says it all really!

Best referee? Ridiculous, he was just the most highly visible and played up to the hype. He may have made a mistake as all of us do. It's just his arrogance afterwards that made it all the harder to deal with. The man still won't admit he made a mistake and although we probably lost the tie at Goodison, he denied us the chance to take it to make a go of it at least
