Barkley and the poaching of young players
36 Comments: I feel angry that Alec Ferguson is trying to poach young players from teams that are struggling financially. How can these teams possibly grow when the only chance is to develop youth players into teams?
If Moyes and Kenwright sell Ross Barkley then I fear that any possibility of growth we have is finished. We may as well pack it in now. These top clubs are wrecking any faint hope of developing our youth talent both making them sit on the bench for 2 -3 years. This is pure greed and the FA should put a stop to this immediately.
The idea that Ferguson, if this is true, wants to swap Darren Gibson, who has had a serious injury and isnt much good anyhow, for our best talent plus £10 million that will be swallowed up by the bank anyway, makes me feel very angry.
Just 2 minutes into thinking you have a probable fantastic up-and-coming midfielder they close in like hawks to snatch them away. If this continues the gulf between top 4 and the rest will grow exponentially beyond repair.

I agree with Stewart — they're just filling column inches. Now that the transfer window is closed, they're desperately trying to keep speculation alive for January.
As fantastic a prospect as Ross looks, the lad hasn't completed three senior games yet, so I can't see anyone paying £15m for him yet.
And we don't do this?
I can understand why Manure would possibly be interested - and I can also understand why the media wankers push these stories to the limit. They obviously believe in their biased thinking that Ross won't win anything here at Everton, therefore he should join one of only 4? clubs that will have a chance of getting a trophy/CL.
I would just love it if Ross were to come out and state that he has no intention whatsoever of going east, but somehow I don't think he will.

Only what we did in the 80s with Steven et al.
Whether it's paper talk or not I reckon unless we do something special this year and finish in the top 6, we'll lose a loyal and extremely talented young lad. We're not in a position to turn down offers of over £20m for anyone really. And that hurts like hell to say.
There were a lot more teams capable of spreading the trophies around in the 80's. Nowadays there are not - you either have the money, buy the best, pay hugely inflated wages, buy the potential young stars on the cheap - or, be like Everton, and just exist at your own level of coping with what you have.

Dave#5 the reason that Steven et all left in the 80's was NOT financial it was that they wanted to play in the European Cup and as we all know because of our fun lovin red neighbours little 'mishap' we couldn't offer this to them.
Spot on, Ciaran. We do the same thing to clubs smaller than us and quite frankly, if I was the manager of the biggest club in the world I'd try to get Ross Barkley off Everton.
Martin....I suspect that Dave was referring to when we actually bought Steven not when we had to let him go. In those days we were a buying club. These days we are a selling club, none of us like this but there we have it !

We are no saints when it comes to the transfer market, we have taken youngsters from from other teams, Moyes has done it himself. Dan Gosliing is one that springs to mind.
Yet when other teams come sniffing around us, they are the spawn of the devil.
Fucking grow up and accept that not all we do/havedone is right and moralistic.

Robert we finished 17th with Rooney in the side then sold him and we finished 4th. He had to be sacrificed for the team. The money we got for him helped us to build a team that has had us competing for the European places ever since.
He had to go, he no longer wanted to play for Moyes either but has since apologised for his behaviour. We have now sacrificed Arteta so i dont believe we need to sell Barkley, its a diffirent situation now.I think or hope he will be at Everton for a bit longer than Rooney was until stupid money is offered.

There's your choice I'm afraid, now that ALL our physical assets have been sold and the club mortgaged to the hilt, the only thing left is to sell players, and the way it works is that the players other teams want are your best ones, you know the ones you don't want to sell. They won't come knocking on the door offering tens of millions for Osman, Hibbert and Neville, it'll be for Arteta (oops, already done), Rooney (Oops), Lescott (Oops), Fellaini, Baines and Barkley.
Either get used to it very quickly or join in the next march with the Blue Union, otherwise bend over and take it like a man, just don't ever complain when it's all too late if you didn't do something about it when you could.

If Barkley does come through over the next couple of years to become a top player do you think the lad is going to want to stay at our stagnant club? Of course not, the lad's going to want to win trophies.
Unless something changes dramatically over the next couple of years then I think we'll continue to ship out the family silver.
I can't see what the fuss is. Didn't we do the same to Utd when we 'stole' Phil Neville off them?
We poached the young lad from Leeds a few years ago (can't remember his name) and they were going to report us to the FA.

One of the greatest players ever at Everton was pinched at an early age from Blackpool, namely Alan Ball. Howard Kendall from Preston too.
However, I do agree with the sentiment that the big clubs are now stockpiling players and thereby weakening the opposition. How many players have coined it but ruined their careers sitting too long on the bench?

Ray I don't think Ball was poached. If I remember correctly we paid 110k for him. A then British record. Could be wrong but seem to remember it was that.
What I can't understand about the blue union and their claim to represent the "majority of evertonians" is that there were 33 thousand fans at goodison park on Saturday yet I believe only a thousand or so chose to march ? Or do I have my figures wrong ?

We dont have to sell anybody, first no scouse lad should ever want to play for Man Utd and second if we are a progressive Club going places why would anyone want to leave? This lad Barkleys a blue and living the dream.
Karl #24, you're right about the amount. I didn't actually say "poached" but surely the same principle of asset stripping of a poorer club by a richer one still applies? We got Gordon West from there too.

Ian @17. A lot of people felt we could and should have hung on to Rooney and built a team around him. The irony was we didn't have the money to build the team until we sold him. You are right to say that the money did do a lot for us at the time.
Different circumstances with Arteta. Other people posted on here recently that several midfield players could possibly take the chance to come out from under his shadow. If you look at our performance on Saturday we did not seem to miss him at all.

I agreed but it does not bode well with making the premier league more competitive, surely this is needed or we face the prospect of a boring league where the best teams win 4 nill every week, crowds drift away football becomes boring and predictable. I agree we did it and have done it though. Maybe they should all join a superleague and just have all the good players from the league, leave us with osman and hibbert. I agree it is not fair on all the clubs we do it too. It wouldn't be that bad but Gibson was offered in exchange its like being treated like idiots with no money. This of course could be a pack of lies, but AF is that arrogant it has probably got some truth in it.

A quota should be set of young players to stay with the clubs they trained with for a period of time so that proper development can take place.

Is a self confessed United fan, and although I only know as much as the next fan, it could be a little bit of mischief making?
It does not help with our financial problems the way they are, I just hope that we will be able to see Ross
Barklay really shine in the royal blue shirt, unlike Wayne Rooney.
In today's Telegraph sports page, they compared Rooney with the great Pele, his date of birth etc.
How many goals, caps etc, and then clubs!!!
They had Wayne Everton 2002/4. United 2004/to date.

After Rooney saga, no Everton fan in their right mind will let themselves get too attached to Ross.....just enjoy him for as long as he is here!
