Peter Reid, about time you came home

 54 Comments: First  |  Last

Anyone else think that Peter Reid has had some shocking jobs but has plodded on manfully because of his love for football? If Blue Bill has a heart he should offer this man a backroom job as this top bloke deserves better than the unenviable tasks of managing teams in administration all the time.

Bring him home Bill and lets see if he can do a job somewhere whether it be in a youth capacity or reserves. The man had a heart of a lion and a winning mentality and I'm sure he can fetch some of the young guns through, and if they turn out as outstanding as him I'm for it!

We should have signed him as manager in the 90s when we were stuck and he was out of a job.

But he went to Sunderland and gave them their best years since the war - I think they finished seventh twice - Sunderland!. But that wasn't enough so they sacked him, Mackies know they are a big club. Ha ha.

He certainly needs cheering up after being sacked at Plymouth with all he has tried for them.

He's about as good as Alan Ball was as a manager. Or Tony Cottee. He might bleed blue but so what? We don't accept that as qualification for Bill to run the club so why should we accept that as a reason for Reidy to come back?

romantic thought but we need some new blood and ideas, look to Europe, my own view on international coaching is to take a look at the U21s and below and look at the footballing sides, the ones that genuinely entertain, cant remember any reports of a dazzling display from any of the "home" nations

We should be looking to the future not constantly reminscing about the past players / managers and thinking all who were associated with us deserve a place in the club.

I've read numerous articles on all sites stating we should bring back the likes of Reidy,Southall, Parkinson etc - for goodness sake none of them not one of them have demonstrated that they are winners post Everton.

I've always thought that a team was getting all the bases covered , ie man manager, tatician, coach etc etc etc , i can't see what Reidy [ who i loved as a player] could bring to the table.
I'd rather see us getting an up and coming [ possibly foreign ] coach in to complement Moyes, ie someone with a bit of tatical nous and attacking flair.

"He's about as good as Alan Ball was as a manager. Or Tony Cottee"

Bit harsh. Reid did well at both City and Sunderland. His last job is certainly no reflection on his abilities. He battled on manfully at Plymouth in impossible circumstances, dipping into his own pocket to pay bills and staff and convincing players to play for months without pay.

I agree with Ian#9 re. a foreign coach to assist Moyes. I have been saying this for years especially after the negative tactics Moyes used v Wigan ( they had not scored away from home all sesaon) - playing a midfielder upfront on his own who has not scored in 2011 and you had other options on the bench or not even required ie Saha. Thankfully in the end it worked out with the subs but come on we are at home and should be putting teams like Wigan away.

Back to Reid - it was only a few weeks ago people were going on about getting Weir back! Reidy would be great to have around. He is a winner and I am sure Stubbs, Irvine or Sheedy would welcome his input as you would not want to break-up the winning Moyes/Round partnership.

Reidy also done well at Leeds and they should have kept him, considering what's happened since. This garbage about foreign coaches pisses me right off. All the foreigners in this league of ours have been given gazillions to fritter away while British managers get the tough jobs, like Everton, Stoke, WBA etc. Would Mourhinio have got Stoke into Europe on freebies and loanees? I doubt it. Alex Ferguson is a shining example of giving British managers a go. 26 years and no desire to go elsewhere for more money. The same people on here crying out for foreigners to work at our club would probably go ballistic if an immigrant took THEIR job

Mick #18. You miss my point. I am not advocating replacing Moyes with some foreign, continental coach/tactician. I would just like to see a foreign " technical, tactical" coach come in to assist Moyes. How many foreign players do we have? We all know Moyes is the boss and you cross his path at your peril but I think he is open-minded and is still learning as a manager. At times I question his style of football and tactics. I just feel another point of view could make Moyes consider another method of play. At the end of the day he picks the players and they play to his tactics.

What have these three managers got in common Sir Alex, The special One & Wenger? Answer they are the three most successful managers in the EPL and none of them played or supported the clubs they managed. Occasionally a Kendall situation does come up but the two roles (playing & managing) are mutually exclusive.
To get back to Moyes, I don?t think he?s cautious rather than negative, just like Mourinio and the vast majority of foreign coaches that a lot of posters are suggesting we should hire (to make us even more cautious perhaps?)
Granted the most successful manager is SAF, whose philosophy has always been attacking (or counter attacking, but he invariably comes undone in Europe, largely as a result of gung-ho football and always remember that world class forwards will always be the most expensive footballers to buy, and he has always had the luxury of being able to afford to buy them, and pay them top dollar

Well said Mick,

The amount of people shouting for foreign(uzbekistan???) coaches is daft. Ask for an attack minded fella by all means.

What does it matter where he's from? I'd like to see us looking for someone from our area first and if there not up to scratch, then look further and so on.

There are hundreds, if not more in this country with the ability to coach good attacking football, whether the managers have the bottle to go for it, opposed to the old Moyes Circa 2004-2009/10.Howtosetateamupnottolose.doc is another matter.

Stephen and Mick, my point about foreign coaches ties in with the current FA badged coaches schooled in the dross of Howard Wilkinson mindtrain, its piss poor to watch and when they come up against a footballing side they invariably get torn a new hoop. Not all foreign coaches are the same but they also don't all go through the Wilkinson method as they do here.

When was the last manager of a title winning Chelsea or Arsenal side British?

Eugene Ruane #26 I gather from your ridiculous post (and probably the clue is in your name) you have an inherent paranoia over questions of nationality. The policy of bringing in foreigners to play and work in our PL is just as scandalous as the ruling elite doing the same to our workforce while millions are on the dole. There is nothing malicious about complaining over injustice and people like you bringing up questions of xenophobia only confirm the widely held view that the people in this country deserve what they get. Maybe Reidy should change his name to Petr Redovski and contact BK, who seems to be easily deceived by foreign influence.

One of the great things about the EU is that from Galway Bay to the Ural Mountains we don't have to call people foreigners anymore. Unless we are just a little Xenophobic. We can go to live and work there as well as they can come to live and work here if we wish.

Besides, after Saturday I don't relish the idea of sending Vellios and Drenthe back home! And though he's gone now we had 5 great years from a Spaniard!

Reid does not have a good track record as a manager and come to think of it neither does Moyes although Moyes has had a lot more to draw on over the years with Everton until lately.
Personally I think Reid would make a good assistant much like Pat Rice or Brian Kidd.

It's easy to recall Reid being part of that impressive team of the mid 1980s with Sheedy, Sharp, Gray etc, didn't get as recognized as some of the other players at the time but still a fine club servant. I'd like to see him back at GP in some capacity in the future. The £50,000 we paid for him 29 years ago could well be the biggest steal since the Great Train Robbery.

Maybe not on such grand a scale, but that does in retrospect, seem a very good deal for what he gave in subsequent years for this club.

I thought about this the other day. The red shite seem to churn out old players into managers whereas us blues don't seem to fancy the hot seat. I was trying to think of ex Everton players who have managed clubs with some limited success. I came up with the following:
Howard Kendall
Joe Royle
Dave Jones
Peter Reid
Gary Speed

I know Sharpy, Inchy and Rats had a go but I think it is fair to say they bombed. Andy Gray choked when put on the spot (bet he would jump at it now rather than droning on at Talksport). That is all I can think of, can anyone think of any others?
