Season 2011-12

Current Squad

 22 Comments: First  |  Last

In view of a number of comments regarding what a new manager would have to work with if David Moyes decided enough was enough, the current squad members and their contracts (based on the information gathered from ToffeeWeb) offer some interesting reading.

Of the current squad of 33 players assigned shirt numbers, the following have contracts that finish by the end of this season:

Hahnemann, Duffy, Distin, Neville, Saha, Drenthe, Cahill, Donovan, Stracqualursi, McFadden, McAleny, Foreshaw, Baxter, Wallace, Bidwell

This will leave us with a playing squad of: Howard, Mucha, Hibbert, Baines, Heitinga, Jagielka, Coleman, Gibson, Bilyaletdinov, Barkley, Osman, Fellaini, Rodwell, Gueye, Vellios, Anichebe, Silva, Yobo, Garbutt

In a sensible world, it would be difficult to see many of the players whose contracts finish the end of this season being offered new contracts (Distin & Duffy being the possible exceptions) and we may even see a few of the longer term contracted players moving on in this window or the next in order to raise much needed funds (hopefully for team building not bank payments).

I do hope that the board and David Moyes do not take the easy way out by offering contract extensions to most of the players out of contract but it is difficult to see what other options they will have.

Whoever is in charge at the start of next season will have a serious problem on their hands.

I thought Cahill signed a five year "deal for life" last year http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/may/18/everton-tim-cahill-marouane-fellaini and Fellaini has a deal until 2016 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/nov/17/everton-marouane-fellaini-signs-contract So you may want to revise your article. Oh and Bily is leaving.

Sorry to disappoint you but Neville signed another contract extension in August. His deal runs out in 2013.

Letting all those players leave at the end of their contracts means that we will get no money for them.

Imagine the outcry if that happens after the Gosling and Pienaar affairs.

Drenthe, Stracq and Donovan won't be here next season.
The kids don't get a look in so might as well count them out. That leaves Duffy and Saha. I'd be amazed if Saha is still an Everton player next summer.

On a side note I asked a colleague of mine who's a Brighton fan about swaping Poyet for Moyes. His two words were NO THANKS!

Not sure how accurate your facts are.

Bet you saha goes to Blackburn scores some goals and everyone starts saying how typical of moyes and how much they loved Saha! Ha.

As I said in my original post, the information I used was from the current squad list in Toffeeweb. Even though a couple of players may have signed extensions already, we are still in trouble.

McAleny, Bidwell, Duffy and Distin I'm sure will all be offered new deals.

Forshaw, Baxter, Wallace will more than likely be offered deals to at least see if they can make the grade. Neville and Cahill have long term contracts I believe.

Would be great for Drenthe to get a contract as well, as frustrating as he is he could be worth £8-9 million and we shouldn't pass that up.

Hopefully Saha will go and Donovan, Stracq and McFadden will go from their loans/contracts.

Wallace and Forshaw have had long enough. If you are 20 and you can't get near the first team when there is an injury crisis then I can't see why you would get a new deal. I'd kind of like to see our sell Jages, Fell, Bain etc because if our debt is manageable as BK claims then by selling them we will have zero debt and we can then fire Moyes, bring in Paul Lambert and rebuild in the championship. Alternatively, BK could be lying in which case we would still be bleeding money even if we sold every player. Notice how many kids we loaned out this year? Guess we can't even afford their meagre pay packages. Also, now that Duffy has had a few good games how long will it take newcastle or someone else to offer him a pre-contract while we dither?

Frustrating article this. The facts are all wrong. Any chance anyone can provide an accurate list of who is out of contract at the end of the season - also Billy is a goner.

Interesting thoughts Kieran, but I think that, just because a player is not ready for the premiership by the age of ~20, doesn't mean they will never be. Look at players like Tim Cahill, Jags and Lescott who made names for themselves in the championship before moving into the premiership in their mid twenties. And how long was Osman in the reserves for? Of course you may well be right about those particular players, but I wouldn't write someone off just because they aren't in the premiership at the ago of 20. Incidentally, unless Baxter is in the managers thoughts for a call up to the first team then it seems a shame that he was recalled as he was having a good season with Tranmere and developing into a tidy player. Hope he makes it at Everton, ieven if it doesn't happen just yet.

I'm an Everton fan and a Brighton season ticket holder ( not Kunal's mate). Poyet 'aint all he's cracked up to be. I think Moyes is the better manager.

Mike Manchester, good to see you're giving your money to Brighton; with all the American Express cash and bright new stadium they obviously need it more than Everton

Mark Stone,

You are right. I wouldn't necessarily condemn 20 year olds in general but if you are further from this particular team at 20 then you were at 16 then it is safe to say that you have no future at the club. Sorry Forshaw and Wallace but your time is up.

John #329, they'd not be worth very much, but neither was Gosling and look at the outcry over the loss of a transfer fee with him.

Maybe if we could get a couple of million for the lot it'll at least pay for the half time jaffas.
