Season 2011-12
The Mail Bag

The best fans

 16 Comments: First  |  Last

As we are still coming to terms with the disappointment of Saturday, I am just proud to be a supporter of Everton Football Club. Like the hundreds of Bluenoses who made The Green Man their watering hole on Saturday, some fans came up to me and asked me why I supported Everton when they heard my accent.

A bit like a comparison to Bryan Hamilton's goal from 1977 that never was and explanations afterwards ? it's difficult to explain why. I feel you are are part of a big family. Very masonic like but something other teams would be envious of. We share glories and disappointments but one thing no-one can take away is the true loyalty of our fans. Players come and go, managers and chairman alike... but the fans are the heartbeat of any club.

As someone who has no family connection with Liverpool itself, I will always count myself a true blue.

Here's to happier times in 2012-13.

COYB!

I met members of the Swedish Supporters Club at the Bear pub on Wembley High Street before the game on Saturday and they too have no connection with Merseyside, but are as passionate and loyal as any Bluenose I've ever met.

We were all gutted with the way we played in the 2nd half and result, but I've got to say the fans were awesome and, as long as we the fans stick together, regardless where we hail from, we can overcome anything COYB!

The thing is Lee once a blue always a blue, but we always seem to be the 'nearly men'... nearly against Villarreal, nearly against Fiorentina, nearly against Chelsea, and now nearly against the Shite.

Friends and family always say to me, "Yeah, but you've done well for the club (smallish) that you are with no budget" ... but it's always difficult for people to understand that we should be up there competing will the rest, with what we have achieved in the 80's and being one of the oldest clubs still playing in the highest league.

It's frustrating when people who know nothing about Everton pity us and say "You've done well", not knowing that we should be doing more that just 'well'...

It's all well and good having great fans ? and we are as good as any ? but it doesn't win you anything and Saturday was just yet another example of coming up short in a big game. I'm nowhere near over it yet and probably won't be for a while.

This isn't going to turn in to a "why I'm 50 times the evertonian..." story and a photo that looks like an extra's cast from the village people concert, is it?

Lee what a load of crap. Every fan of every club thinks they have the best fans. If we had the best fans we would be getting shut of these idiots who run us and the dithering dick of a manager. Get real.

No offense, but let's leave the self-styling ' we're the best fans' sort of thing to those jokers from across the park.

Some people on this site make me fucking sick, I spend a small fortune following MY club and I will boast about the club and the fans when ever and wherever I wish so fuck you.

As a bunch, we may be the most passionate fans. But not the best.

Why else do we hear/read stuff like "be careful what you wish for" and "he's got our best interests at heart"?

...2 stadium fuckups
...plunged into a blackhole of ever increasing debt
...no long term plan
...no assets
...a list of botched investment bids
...lies (about transfer targets, about funding, about GP, about Kirkby)
...Keith Wyness
...Rooney

Clearly we aren't the best, but maybe the most blinkered.

Every clubs hardcore fans think they are the best.

With success comes the 'Tag alongs'. You know the type, have every shirt that have ever won the title since Sky re-invented football.

We are shit and have had no success since the prem was instigated, therefore have no ' Tag alongs'.

Mick - calm down , we're all upset over Saturday. No need to have a go at another fan trying to be positive.

Well said Lee. And bollocks to anyone who feels the need to criticize.

I agree with Mick Wrende, although I would say our fans are the best at making up excuses rather than taking responsibility themselves to get things done.

Interesting comment, David.

Look at the limited support given to the Blue Union, and a response from others that ranged from apathy to downright aggression, "kopite behaviour" and all the other shite thrown at fans who tried to take on some responsibility for seeing through a change.

Where are they now, btw? Seems to have gone awful quiet!
