Solution to the right-wing problem

 23 Comments: First  |  Last

Tranquilla Barnetta. Available on a free. Newcastle rumoured to be looking at him but surely a no-brainer for our right side? I've always been very impressed whenever I have seen him play.

Some cracking free transfers out there; no need to be blowing our meager stash on transfer fees. Pienaar on the Left. Fellaini pushed forward and Fernandes brought in. Simple! Bring on next August.

You'd think it was a no-brainer wouldn't ya? Him on the right, Fernandes in the middle with Gibbo, Felli playing off Jelly and hopefully we can bring back Pienaar. Maybe bring in Rodagella on a free as a pacy back-up for Jelly. And I'd happily see Rodwell sold to pay for Pienaar and maybe Naismith or the Norweigan lad. But I'm sure Elstone and his gang will come out saying "wages are up... this and that are more expensive," blah blah blah etc. By my crap calculations we're are probably £150k a week better off when it comes to wages than we were this time last year having shipped out, Arteta, Yak, Vaughany etc.

He only managed to play the full 90 minutes on one occasion in the season just gone and is only 5'8 tall which is no good when Jagielka is hoofing them upfield.

I'd love to see Hoilett myself. I think if we are to push Fellaini further forward then Diame on a free from Wigan would be a good shout. There is a good bunch of freebies out there, let's just wait and see.

Would it even be conceivable to think of the frees (consisting of: Rodellaga, Diame, Hoilett, Barnetta and Fernandes) all coming to Everton and the difference it would make to our team...

I said all the freebies, but did my best to avoid mentioning the Legendary Heskey... until now...

Lot of good frees out there. I feel we missed a trick not getting Arouna Kone, who had a great season at Levante in La Liga, a suprise package team, hard working, so it just made sense to me but he signed a one-year deal with them. Be interesting to see how both do next season.

Diame has said he was going across the park until Kenny was sacked though so I'm not so sure I'll be seeing him at Goodison next year but I think Barnetta would be a great shout although I've a feeling he would like to stay in the Bundesliga... yet again, the wages of the EPL might be appealing.

I'd like Pedro Leon from Real, who went out on loan at Getafe last year... Arteta-esque loan with view to permanent move? It is silly season, but a blue can dream!

I've not seen much of Barnetta, but of the other frees I think Hoilett would make a genuine difference to the team, providing pace and creativity down the right.

Rodellega would be good to add a bit of variation to our frontline. Due to his pace he can also be moved to out wide as a makeshift winger (and Mr Moyes likes some versitilty.

Never seen Barnetta play but i'm going to stick my neck out and say he will definitely improve our team seeing as we dont have a single winger on our books.

I will stick my neck and say, pretty much anyone from a top division club around the world who is a free would be at least useful to make numbers, let alone a player who is in an international team.

Speaking of Heskey, anyone who hasn't read this really should! http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/may/25/emile-heskey-aston-villa-released?INTCMP=SRCH

Oh, the irony of Fellaini playing alongside a team mate whose name translates as "peaceful hairdo" !!

It's been said before but I feel the need to remind the hopefuls (of which I am one) that there is no such thing as 'Freebie' these days. Hoilett for example would cost at least £4M in 'compensation' to Blackburn and someone like Barnetta or Diame would probably ask for a £1-2M signing on fee plus a huge bonus to the agent and probably higher wages than they would usually be entitled to.

To summarise, there may be bargains but no-one is free... and, for a club as skint as us, that means we have to pick very carefully where the pennies go. For my money, if we could somehow wangle Pienaar and Hoilett then that would be dreamy...

Agreed Sam but I think Hoilett is too expensive for us. 4-10m compensation depending on what report you read. Plus he played up front most of the season for Blackburn and they went down. Hardly makes me want to throw all our eggs in that basket though I do agree he is a decent prospect.

Barnetta on the other hand is proven quality on the european stage and international. Plus he would be cheaper. Hoilett isn't really a RM anyway.

Diame Fernandes Barnetta Pienaar would probably set you back 10m all in.
I think we will sell someone personally though so we may have more to spend. I agree though for a free transfer your still looking at 2m ish

Hoilett a shining light in a pretty poor side last season. Would have thought he's destined for bigger things than us (or maybe the Shite will sign him for £50m in the process destroying his career...!)

Whats anyone think of Giovanni dos Santos? He's going to be looking for a new club this summer. I'm from the United States and I've seen him do a number on the national team while playing for Mexico. I've always thought he could really help us out on the right side.

Is the feeling that Fellaini is better deployed in an advanced role?

James, granted upwards of 5m is definitely more than we could afford for Hoilett but any less and I do think he represents a bargain. He's had 2 extremely good seasons in the premiership and is still only 21. Am not sure about the lads personality but so long as its not drenthe-esque i'd be very surprised if he's not heading to one of the big clubs for a good double figure sum in 4-5 years time or so.

Barnetta is a great shout though he is has been quite injured of late and unlike Hoilett is not proven in the Premiership but thats not to say that he couldn't make a big impression.

Martin - I think he's capable in all 3 roles.

He's probably a bit wasted in the deepest lying role, and we seem to have Gibson for this position now.

For my money he's absolutely superb in the box to box role, and is beginning to dictate games from here. It's probably his best position.

He's able to play the advanced role - doesn't have the creativity of a natural number 10, but gives us a different kind of threat with his height and pressing and is still capable of linking play.

I think the key though is that it will be easier/cheaper to find a more 'defensive' player if we're looking to add to the squad... and so we may see Fellaini used in a more advanced role more often.

Especially given that Moyes has taken to playing Cahill in a deeper role towards the end of last season. I think it will be interesting to see how Moyes uses Cahill next season.

sadly Fellaini has a a poor scoring rate for someone so tall, you really need your second attacker to get at least 10/12 a season and I just cant see him getting them,

However if the remaining goals were shared round the team then it wouldnt be so critical, but cant see Osman getting 10 or Coleman getting 10 so you need a prolific front two to become a real threat to the the CL positions..

Steve, Fellaini hasn't been consistently played in an attacking role to be able to see if he can get those 10/12 goals a season.

He does seem to have his best games in that position though, whether he likes it or not?

I hate this time of year. Nothing to do but speculate about who we would like to see in a blue shirt whilst knowing full well we'll never see them. What's Racquelme doing these days?
