Redmond has just gone to Norwich.

It's annoying Redmond has gone but, if only to Norwich, I wonder how good was he?

A good player... and it looks like they have strengthened in a few areas. It will be tough down there for the opening game.

Chris Hughton gave him his debut at Birmingham, not surprising that he wants to work with him again. He was never going to start for us so no problem with him going somewhere else.

Just another bigged up overrated English youngster. I would also point out that besides the usual back page rubbish that links us with Uncle Tom Cobbley and all there was no actual evidence that Martinez was the least bit interested in him at all.

I see your point Patrick, but RM must have a plan of action and targeted transfers. Just because someone is English and young and relatively cheap, doesn't automatically mean we should buy them. The players need to be aligned with Martinez's proposed ethos/strategy.

We haven't put in a bid for Kone either so perhaps that shouldn't have it's own place either. But I do get your point Jack, it was only the fact that the player himself stated he would like to come to Goodison which funnily enough is exactly what Kone has reportedly said as well. If we relied on the club to inform us there would be nothing to report until the pre-season games kick off.

Disapoined to miss out on a hot prospect like Redmond, especially as he has gone at such a reasonable price. Hope we don't live to regret this one. That said, it could have just been press speculation that we were after him. Who knows what decent young players Martinez has on his radar!

Genuinely disappointed about this. I'm not an expert on him but he's looked really good. He's skilful, creative and a young and up and coming English talent as well. Even if he hadn't been that successful, at that price and age he'd have been effectively free when you take sell-on value into account, unless things had gone really badly wrong.

Good young players often go to teams where they will get to play and then get bought later down the line by bigger teams. Look at Victor Moses, I thought we should have gone for him when Wigan bought him for £2.5m a few years back and then sure enough after a couple of seasons they sold him for near £10m to chelsea.

As for Redmond, seems like a good young prospect at a very good price. Hopefully Martinez has other plans.

I personally think Everton is a much bigger team than Norwich. I am not going to comment on how good he is, because I personally had never even heard of him until this week. Ross, the only players that really caught my eye last season were Benteke and Taarabt from QPR. In terms of young players, I don't recall anybody standing out and making me think 'he is good enough for Everton'. I don't follow this logic of highlighting football players that we should sign, that I have never even watched for 90 minutes. Its all too fantasy football for me.

How have we lost out on a player?

There are hundreds of good player transfers not involving everton every season, always has and always will. Beggars belief how people can make something out of nothing and do the whole "woe is me/the board" thing.

I'm normally the one saying, 'Dont panic, give the boss some time.' But I have to say I'm getting frustrated. I don't understand how Redmond couldn't fit the bill for Everton. He's young, hungry, showed a desire to play for us, is a good player, is cheap to buy and is very likely to rise in value. Surely this is a no brainer.

I think you can pick up good value with the premiership becoming less physical than it once was, allowing foreigners to play their normal game. Basel humiliated United a little back, Lewandowski nearly went to Blackburn but then landed at Dortmund for just £4m. I reckon some of those lesser leagues are the way to go - ie where Dortmund, Porto go fishing.

Redmond is not a player we 'missed out on' because there is no evidence Everton were ever seriously interested in him in the first place. Just because his agent comes out and attempts to pimp him to a particular club does not mean there's a bid in the pipeline, not does it mean we should sign him up simply because he said he would like to play for Everton. Robbie Savage used to say the same thing every six months but it doesn't mean we 'missed out' on the chance to have him mincing about in midfield doing his best She-Ra impression.

Anyway, Redmond is not some searing young talent that everyone's been scrambling for. He's not exactly at the level of a Wilfried Zaha or the seed of Ince. True, a number of Premier League clubs bigger than Norwich have had a look at him over the last few years (United & Liverpool included) but none have ever seen enough to actually convince them he can cut it at the top level. I first saw him play a few years ago and a number of times since. In my opinion he does not look ready for the Premier League right now. He has an abundance of pace, a few little tricks and is prepared to run at a player but his first touch, passing ability, physical strength and decision making all need considerable work. He plays a bit like a weaker, more Worzell Gummidge brained Theo Walcott or a bobbling Subbueteo player flicked full pelt down a fucking badly creased pitch.

Phil. Redmond is a fair prospect. Our academy is full of fair prospects. Martinez is looking to sign players of skill and good character who will quickly adapt to the way he wants us to play. Redmond obviously didn't fit the requirements.

In a recent statement Martinez said his priorities were a goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder and a striker. Certain players will have been earmarked and I'll be very surprised if any of them arrive wearing L plates.

As for signing players who might benefit the club long term. Do new managers think along those lines? I don't think so. Job security would come first.

See Anelka is coming back to premier West Brom I think. I've always like him. He knows were the goal is. Over 100 I think he's scored. Why can't we go in for someone like him?
