One more coaching addition from Wigan

Sky Sports "understands" that Roberto Martinez is looking to bring in former Trinidad and Tobago international Dennis Lawrence to join his coaching staff at Everton.

The report suggests that new Latics boss Owen Coyle was keen to keep Lawrence at the DW Stadium but "Martinez has moved to lure (him) away".

You won't be able to get near Finch Farm,if this trend continues! A log jam of pie wagons, all queuing up,to make their deliveries! Only joking! I think! Obviously Robbie thinks this guy would be a good addition as a defensive coach hmmm! Didn't exactly excel in that department at Wigan! Still only time will tell!

Absolute joke for me, but at least Round has gone and he's a clueless cunt.

Peter didn't know you were such an expert on the coaching circle. Once Martinez was appointed the transfer of his backroom staff was inevitable. Happens nearly every time there's a managerial change. Can't just get Martinez with the best of Moyes' coaches left over – doesn't work that way.

I'm happy for new coaches to come in – keep Stubbsie and Dunc and I'm happy. Apparently Dennis Lawrence is a forward-thinking coach who looks at all angles when it comes to coaching – I'm not sure it's a good or bad thing... at the very least, it will freshen things up.

Despite Martinez saying he wanted to use the existing coaches at Everton now that Weir has gone and he has brought his whole coaching team from Wigan, where will Stubbs,Sheed y and Ferguson fit in?

A Trinidad and Tobago defender??? What next, Brett Angell as striker coach?

Brian. They are coaches of the reserves and two junior teams. As nobody has been brought in for their jobs, I expect they will carry on as normal, just like you and I if some of our work colleagues left and were replaced.

I suppose we should all remember that just about every decent coach in recent times was not a distinguished player, just as top drawer players like Bryan Robson or John Barnes were unmitigated disasters as managers or coaches. Big name is usually the wrong way to go.

Ross, what difference does his nationality make? I would say his 300+ appearances in the English Football League are more important, and he played in a World Cup. Both way above anything Wenger or Mourinho ever achieved as players.

If all a coach needs is a big name then why not sign up Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink??

The article states Lawrence is considered one of the most innovative coaches in the country.

His philosophy that strikers can only be properly motivated if the defence is shipping tonnes and tonnes of goals certainly does go against traditional thinking.

Well if these coaches are so good as we are told the manager is then why the hell were Wigan always in the bottom 3. There were other clubs with less money than Wigan so it must be a lot to do with how they were coached.

Mike Rourke, I like his thinking. Most strikers go into a game hoping to get a goal. With this guy around, our strikers will know they need to get a minimum of four if we are ever to get some points. Healthy pressure.

Stubbs sounds like a Moyes clone. In a recent radio interview his parting words were (I quote): "There is no substitute for experience."

Brian # 867- Wigan were one of the smallest clubs in the Premier League. The day after the FA Cup Final I read an account of the match that compared the cost of both teams. The Man City tean cost something in the region of £125M in transfer fees whilst the Wigan team cost £12M.

I reckon that Alex Ferguson, Wenger or Mourinho would have had a battle to keep Wigan from relegation. Yes all 3 are great coaches but you can't deny that each has had a great advantage in being at clubs with great financial resources.

It's funny but back in 1994 I can't recall there being anything said about the manager and assistant manager duo of Joe Royle and Willie Donnachie from relegated Oldham Athletic ? Or to put it another way the last manager to win a trophy at Everton was Joe Royle who arrived from Oldham who had been relegated a few months earlier. Any anwers to that FACT ? Kind of blows out of the water the argument that if they were that good coaches, then their previous team wouldn't have been relegated doesn't it Brian?

I am afraid, very afraid. There is a faint yet tangible smell of relegation in the air. We are taking on board a mob of losers to whom any place above bottom three is a great achievement.

If we sell just one of our two genuine diamonds, my fears would turn into a nightmare.

Dick why panic so soon, I happen to think that we will lose one if not both of our stars, but we knew that from the get go and it would have happened regardless of who was the manager.

It may not of course happen and both may be persuaded to give us another six months and if we aren't in the running for Europe come January then they will in all probability leave us.

If they leave between now and the window closing we will replace them with other players. At the moment nobody is wanting to jump ship - which can be taken as a good sign - look at some other PL players handing in transfer requests.

We still have the same squad less natural wastage as has served us pretty well from the last 18 months and we have added to it. Obviously we cannot afford MF and LB to depart without replacing them, now that would spell danger signs and maybe unsettle the squad and the supporters.

Cheer up everyone! If it really just boiled down to the coaches then any club could win the league. Its about the players!

And ours are better than Wigan's! Especially better than that Kone geezer and that centre half from Alcatraz and that ridiculous Bale hitting clown of a keeper called the same name as superman's dad Jor El or something.

We are becoming Wigan Athletic NEWCO. Why cant we be strong and go for players like Fer and Honda, we had the chance to dign Negrado. But after our scouting players like Fer, Norwich come in snd buy our targets. BK is gutless we are on a very steep slide into oblivion. RM promices champions league................. NOT A CHANCE. These 2 are killing our club.

Peter Howard, his alcoholism was becoming more apparent in that season, plus the fact that many of their top players then, Pierce, his son Nigel, Sheringham were all sold and some duffers replaced therm.

Personally, the tragedy of Cloughie is that he couldn't get over the death of Peter Taylor, his assistant in 1990. He lost the opportunity to patch up their rift but tragically that chance was lost.

Remember Peter, Cloughie took over Forest, struggling in Division 2 in 1975, and within 4 years they won the First Division and were Champions of Europe.

Chris Donnelly, rubbish, absolute nonsense. How is Martinez ruining the club considering he has only been here a week and a half? Enlighten me please.

"We are becoming Wigan Athletic NEWCO. Why cant we be strong and go for players like Fer and Honda, we had the chance to sign Negrado."

Er, WE HAVE NO BLEEDING MONEY Chris. Just because we have signed 3 Wigan players and taken a few of their staff, doesn't mean we'll go down like they did.

Er, don't all managers take their coaches and some players when they move. Fergie did it, Mourinho did it. Why shouldn't Martinez do it? Don't say "because they got relegated" because that's a load of nonsense.

Ross 211, how can a team that finish 6th the year before appoint a relegated manager? We did though and you support it.

These signings are real bottom of the barrel stuff. It has actually become quite exciting now to see how low we can truly go!

Lots of worried fans about and it all sounds quite genuine. All my life I've been glass half empty with fingers crossed. That way I don't get too disappointed if things go wrong. Unfortunately, there are a few who sound as though they will be disappointed if things go right!

These things happen. Last season I laid into Pienaar for never hitting the target, and in the very next match he scored that wonder goal with his left foot. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

Right now I'm banking on Martinez doing the right thing. He's started off by adding backup to certain areas but nothing big will happen till the Fellaini / Baines situation is resolved.

Harold. Having read relentless criticism of Moyes on this very site for years from the very people who are lauding Martinez, I am more than happy to keep pointing out the double-standards and hypocrisy at play. And I plan to do it every chance I get.

That being said, I hope that Martinez proves to be Howard Mark I rather than Mike Walker. That will be proven on the football pitch so let's see what happens.

Michael Kenrick
239 Posted 10/07/2013 at 14:22:20
Steve, I suspect those who were critical of Moyes had become frustrated with his football and his style of management, and may even be glad to see him gone.

The arrival of Roberto Martinez promises at least the potential for a change from that staleness, and those who accept his appointment are of course hopeful that Martinez will be successful as the manager of Everton.

Your attitude to this situation stinks of prejudgment. Others are prepared to give him time and see how his new players settle in and perform for the club.

That's the difference here: there is no double standard. Moyes was judged by what he did for Everton; you and your ilk are not giving Martinez a chance with you boring and pointless rhetoric.

Chris Leyland
250 Posted 10/07/2013 at 14:50:02
Michael K - I think that you are partly correct in your response to Steve but, there are many on this site who relentlessly slagged Moyes not only on what he did but also for things he might have done or might be rumoured to be doing. Example, even now; the shit thrown at him for him apparently wanting to sign Baines whilst in the next breath saying it is only natural for Martinez to want to bring in players he knows from Wigan.

People are actually now judging Martinez on what he is doing and that is signing three players. Some people think this is a good thing whereas other don't. Some, Tony Marsh for example, still want to use it as a stick to beat the departed Moyes with by saying that at least Martinez isn't dithering. A fine example of boring and pointless rhetoric which you, as editor, are happy to allow to pass without comment despite picking Steve up on his post.

The thing is that with the Moyes debate it just won't seem to go away and it pervades and indeed polarises this site more than any other topic. There are double standards on both sides of the argument. So, unless you are going to ban discussions about Moyes then we are just going to have to accept it will continue with everything Martinez does compared to Moyes in a good or bad way by either side of the debate.

Steve, I didn't say "Why would a team that finished 6th last season appoint a relegated manager"

I said, in response to Dick, who thought we might relegated, that a team that finished 6th last season cannot GET relegated this season.

As I said before - and everyone has seemingly dodged the question - nobody seemed to complain when we appointed Joe Royle and Willie Donnachie back in 1994. Yet only a few months previously Oldham had been relegated.

Relegation does not mean that a manager is a bad manager. Nor do relegated clubs have squads made up of 100% bad players.I have read "postings" on this site from Evertonians going on about signing Remy from QPR - they were relegated so is he a bad player ?

I think there have been some serious prejudices expressed by some people. I hope Martinez and the guys he has signed will do well. I don't if he and they will do well - but I am prepared to reserve judgement. Unlike some people it would seem.

Sorry that should read "I don't know if he and they will do well - but I am prepared to reserve judgement. Unlike some people it would seem".

And we don't know do we ? If we are being honest. Sometimes new signings that everyone thought would do well are just the opposite. You can't tell, so it's best to reserve judgement I think. To those who can't I say put your money where your mouth is - stick a few quid on Everton struggling.

Martinez knows exactly what he wants and this coach is probably very good at his job.

For me, changes were needed. Although fully supportive of Moyes, his grim determination to stick with his favourites drove me crackers.
Goodness knows what damage it did to the fringe players.

Now he's gone, these lads will be filled with renewed hope and zest. For the first time in eleven years we have a level playing field and talented guys like Oviedo will see it as an opportunity to regain his international place.

I watched Costa Rica hammer Cuba yesterday and their quick-fire pass and move ability was astonishing. If Oviedo is as good as these lads he must be some player.

Let's face it. If Martinez takes to him, and I think he might, it will feel like a new signing.
