Fellaini buy-out clause has one more month

 Comments (74)  jump
Meanwhile, jurnos at the The Mirror are equally keen to see Marouane Fellaini's £23.5 million buy-out clause activated before it expires on August 14, with the faintly ridiculous claim that Manchester United and Arsenal are "running out of time" to sign him from Everton

They claim Everton will demand more than £30 million for him after that date.

Personally, like I've said before, the sooner this sorts itself out the better! However, if Roberto has the funds to add reinforcements/replacements ( there hinges the question) if he went ahead and Fellaini didn't go,at least it would put more of a demand on Fellaini! Last season if he was fit and available, he would play, whether he'd had a couple of bad games before! There was no challenge for his position!

I think we ought to get some sort of an answer from Fellaini himself personally.
He needs to tell us if he wants to go or not. If he wants to go then we should contact teams interested and offer him at his buy-out value to get a quick sale and time to bring in replacements. If he wants to stay, then everything is fine - we don't sell him!
What I don't want to happen is for the club to be kept in the dark and then be forced to sell him just before the season starts when we have no time to bring in anybody (the most probable outcome)
PS - I think we have missed out big time on Fer - he was desperate to join us. Maybe it means Fellaini is staying? Or maybe Martinez doesn't rate him? Our loss is Norwich's gain I fear anyway.

Has the value or the nature of this clause ever actually been confirmed?

Strikes me that if it was simple as a minimum fee then he'd be on someone else's pre season tour right now.

If they haven't triggered the clause already then why would they do it after their tours?

Mark ,

If you we're looking to buy Fellaini, would you pay the figure in the clause £24 million,or wait until the clause runs out and make a lesser offer?
Our ongoing financial plight is common knowledge amongst the Premiership clubs.
Only this thick board of ours could insert a clause that lapses with a full 2 weeks of transfer window remaining.
He will go for no more than £20 million in my opinion.

600 Posted 14/07/2013 at 18:30:15
Paul 394 - What you say doesn't make sense. Clubs will want to try and buy Fellaini before the release fee expires. We would have to take £24 mil now, afterwards we can charge what we like, and we've said we would charge £30 mil once it expires (according to the tabloids).

Paul Andrew - I'm not sure what your point is, there's nothing to stop us accepting less than 24 million before the release clause runs out.

Once the release clause has run out in a months time we can demand any amount we want, or simply reject any offers for any amount of money

Mark,

What was the point of the clause then?

Paul Andrews
612 Posted 14/07/2013 at 18:36:38
Jamie,

Mr Chairman has reminded all and sundry of the clause on several occasions. He even did it at the press conference where we unveiled Martinez as our manager. Expect another reminder soon.

In simple terms, we sell Fellaini or Baines to get the manager a transfer budget. Baines will sign a new contract... so it's sell Fellaini or no transfer budget.

Alex Foxx
613 Posted 14/07/2013 at 18:32:50
Paul - You've got in backwards mate. He can't go for any less than £24m. Everton have to accept any bid of that figure up until August 14th, but come the deadline Everton are under no obligation to accept any bids - so even an offer of say £30m wouldn't necessarily have to be accepted.

Far from being thick, it's actually a smart move: it gives Felliani the release clause he (and his Dad) no doubt insisted on, but also puts the ball back in our side of the court after the deadline, so we don't have to worry about Man City triggering the clause on transfer deadline day... After August 14th we only sell him if we want to.

Mark Frere
614 Posted 14/07/2013 at 18:36:55
Paul,

The clause will of being inserted by Fellaini when he signed the contract to give him the chance of playing in the CL.

The expiry date of the clause would of been inserted by us so we don't lose Fellaini last day of the transfer window... leaving us without enough time to get replacement players

Paul Andrews
620 Posted 14/07/2013 at 18:48:18

Paul 605 – I was suggesting that anyone was queuing up to buy him, but you were saying that the release fee expiring is a bad thing, when how can it be?

Right now, if we don't want to sell for £24 mil but some one bids that amount we have to accept, when it expires if someone bids that amount we can turn it down.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just think you are misunderstanding the situation.

If someone stumps up the cash for Fellaini, which I'm growing increasingly optimistic they won't, then hows about Nemanja Matić as a replacement? I have no idea how much he would cost, but he looks like a player in the same mould as Felli.
Paul Smith

Karl Masters
669 Posted 14/07/2013 at 21:40:47
I would imagine his reputed £100k a week wage demands are what will stop him leaving. Five years would cost somebody £26m making a total outlay of £50m!

Is he worth a whole seasons TV money to somebody like Arsenal?

As an aside anybody asking where is all the money going only have to look at the players.

Mark Frere
676 Posted 14/07/2013 at 22:06:28
Paul Andrews - So what you are really saying is no one will be willing to pay 24 million?

Do you understand that it will only be our decision weather to sell Fellaini or not if the £24 million clause is not met?

Do you understand the £24 million buyout clause runs out on 14th August, then it is only Evertons decision to sell him for any price they see appropriate?

James Flynn
684 Posted 14/07/2013 at 22:13:18
What is the argument against Paul Andrews' position?

The £24M appears to be the correct number. But if a club comes in at £18 (or £15) and Kenwright agrees, isn't it up to Fella at that point?

Danny James
688 Posted 14/07/2013 at 23:33:12
Just so I can sleep tonight: Does everybody now understand that Everton are in a stronger position once the clause expires not a weaker one in regards of how much we are likely to receive for Fellaini?

Think of it like he is on special offer at the moment at £24million and after August 15th his price goes back up again to £30million+.

Ernie Baywood
691 Posted 14/07/2013 at 23:56:30
If no-one is prepared to pay £24M then we're in exactly the same position. And I think that's the position we're in.
Si Cooper
693 Posted 14/07/2013 at 23:48:47
Surely it depends on whether desperate we are to sell someone to provide funds for other players, or whether we are in a position to bring in the players we already have (and more besides?) and not have to sell anyone?

If it is the former, then other teams can take advantage of our desperation, let the escape clause expire and then offer less than £24 million at some late stage in the transfer window.

If we are strapped for cash (hands up all those who think we could well be) then the expiry of the clause will not put us in a stronger position unless at least two teams are willing to go all out in a bid to secure him.

If that were the case then they would be better off triggering the clause now and getting the player settled in at their club.

This is dragging on and I'm chuffed about the month deadline.

I suspect that he wants to go and that he will go and that there may well be a view in the boardroom and boot-room that this window;s wheeling and dealing will depend on whether or not he goes.

I think he will and I hope he does because, in a nutshell, smart use of funds would make us a better all-round team.

My fears are that others - Chelski hawks etc. - are circling round perhaps feeling that the fee might drop the nearer we get to September. Above all, I want us to have a decent stretch of time to get the two or three folks in who could make us a stronger, deeper, and more creative team.

Danny James
712 Posted 15/07/2013 at 01:45:15
I don't think we would accept less than £24 million this transfer window. I think in a year's time when he is in the last two years of his contract then it might force our hand a bit. Hopefully he will have a great World Cup and everyone will want him and as a result it will keep the price as high as possible.

By far our most classy player in terms of control and strength on the ball. I don't see the sense in selling him to buy two or three other players, our wages/turnover ratio is already 82%, increasing the budget is not a smart move.

Hysterical thread, yet bizarre thread. Paul Andrew's ominous 'mark my words' release clause where we MUSTsell a player under contract for less than he's worth, maybe topped by Paul Ellem's idea that Fellaini should tout himself or keep telling the world he loves his current employers.
Matt Traynor
736 Posted 15/07/2013 at 08:59:27
Chad, I'm afraid we have to get used to it, and let's face it we should be in Fellaini's case. We've had this "hysteria" for 3 years now, pretty much non-stop, to the point were I don't mind if he is sold - as long as we get a decent fee.

Baines is also the subject of regular transfer speculation, but at least his dad isn't quoted in the media every other month stating he needs to be playing CL football.

BTW, for those asking why insert a clause with an expiration date, it's to stop someone activating the clause late on in the window and Everton being forced to agree to a sale. Blue Bill hates deadline day sales donchaknow? And I believe him - after all he kept his promise when he said he wouldn't sell Rooney for £50m...

Mike Green
738 Posted 15/07/2013 at 09:10:27
The clause is there for he players benefit, and will be there on the request of the player. The clause gives the player a 'get out of jail' card allowing him to leave regardless of the clubs feelings if someone bids enough to trigger the clause. The club still has the ability to sell the player while the clause is in place, but once it runs out theoretically has complete control of the contract.

So - either way we don't have to accept less than the clause stipulates while its in place and can name our price once it runs out. Whether we do or not is up to us, but realistically I can't see other clubs queuing up to buy him so I reckon he's staying put unless we want to take <£20m for him, either before or after the clause expires.

Ryan Sloan
739 Posted 15/07/2013 at 09:21:07
Well if no-one meets the price, then don't sell. It's that simple. Yeh, clubs know we're skint, but were we not when we sold a well overpriced Lescott, and then Rodwell? Why can't Man City come in? They pay double...

Seriously I don't think we will sell below £24M. I think Arsenal where prepared to meet the clause but not his £100 grand a week wages, that shows to me what a mercenary Fellaini is. Arteta actually took less so he could play in the Champions League.

I find him very inconsistent to say the least; maybe clubs know that he's not as good as he thinks he is.

Dan, totally agree.

Selling Felli for anything less than £25m is madness.

I understand the fear that we may have too, but would like to believe we are not that foolish.

Selling for around say £18-20m would actually be at a loss to the club. Considering we paid in the region of £15m for the bloke, and have been paying interest on that money for a few years now.

Not to mention he is only just coming into his prime if he was say 28, I would understand.

Sure Paul, next time I find myself "debating" future possible (and therefore as yet fictional) events with a man who's argument is based simply on opinion and the misunderstanding of what is a fairly basic principle, I'll ensure that I get my facts entirely in place.

In the mean time, the only actual facts regarding Fellaini's contractual situation is that he is under contract, which has three years to run and nobody has yet triggered the £23.5 million buy-out clause.

Perhaps you got over excited about the word clause, mistakenly thinking it had something to do with Father Christmas... I don't know Paul, I'm unaware of the facts. I'm only aware that you've taken the trouble to write a number of times demonstrating a clear lack of knowledge of a sale process. If I offer you £1 for your house, you do not need to sell at that price, regardless of how much noise I make in the media about how much better your house would be in my possession. Even if you chose to sell your house and I met your asking price, you do not have to sell to me... this situation would be the equivalent of Accrington Stanley triggering the buy-out clause, but the player not wishing to be paid less money or play at a lower level.

Why at a time when if you believe the paper talk the bids are moving up would we suddenly sell for less at a worse time for us? Or perhaps having read this you'd like to sell your house to me for 50p?

Looks like Arsenal are not interested anymore as wenger is going to blow his £70m on Higuain and Rooney. Anyway, most of them deluded gooners think Ramsay is better than Fellaini.
It also looks like ginger will spend all his pennies on Fabregas and Garay so we should be able to sleep better now.

Colin, I know several Arsenal fans, and not one of them would make that claim...bizzare claim.

I also don't get expect 1) Barcelona will accept United's offer, esp after Thiago's departure. 2) If they do, Arsenal will likely bid and operate their reported buy back clause.

Wouldn't be surprised if Fellaini was next on the list.

Rick, not sure if I agree re. a fee of below 25million being too cheap for Fellaini. It is reductive to look at relative prices sometimes...because everyone can bring up Michu for 2ish million, or Torres for 50m, as a means to establish the relative cheapness/expensive of any given player. But let's just look at 25million atm, and the purchasing of players around that amount in the last 1/2 seasons.
Mata - best midfielder, bar Bale, and possibly Michu, in the league last season? 23.5million. Incredible playmaker with goal scoring ability
Thiago - Just joined Bayern for 22mil ish? Will probaly become part of the first team, and is younger than Fellaini.

Fabregas has just been subjected to a 25million offer...whilst off value, he is on another level to Fellaini.
Cazorla - 16million. Remarkable player, among the best in the league last season. Goal scorer and playmaker to boot.

Hazard, apparently purchased for around 25million. Will become one of the great attacking players in the world. Already a fantastic player, and again, younger than Fellaini.
I don't see how, in this company, 23.5m for Fellaini wouldn't be more than fair? We could probaly sign Ericksen for a few million less, if he wanted to come. Fellaini also a dodgy temperment, and is more inconsistent that most players valued in the 20mil bracket.

Jim Knightley
947 Posted 15/07/2013 at 18:11:15
And I read a tweet from a Liverpool guy who believes Fabregas is massively overrated earlier. What's the point? A majority of Arsenal fans do not believe they do not need Fellaini because they have Ramsay and Diaby. Any real Arsenal fan is aware of Diaby's current injury, and his persistent injury problems. Are you not aware that Diaby is out till Christmas at least? you will be telling me Arsenal fans don't think they need Fellaini because of Gilberto Silva next.
Colin Glassar

In his post match interview Martinez was making positive noises about Fellaini taking on more responsibility and being a huge part of our team this season. I'm pretty confident that as long as nobody matches his buy out clause (looking increasingly likely they won't) he will get his head down and be focused on the season ahead. He is still young and doesn't need to move just yet. If he can play even better than last season and keep it up for the whole year there will still be interest in him next year.

Most of us would rather lose Felli than Baines for lots of reasons. The very fact it keeps coming up is because Felli himself wants to move. (How easy would it be for both Baines and Felli to squash all the speculation if they def wanted to stay). They don't but of the two, Baines is the one least likely to force the issue IMHO
