Ajax confirm bid for Alderweireld

Ajax have confirmed that they have received an offer from an unnamed club, believed to be Spartak Moscow, for defender Toby Alderweireld who has been linked strongly with Everton in recent weeks.

The player's agent claimed last week that the Blues had made enquiries about the Belgian who saw a move to Norwich fall through recently after failing to agree personal terms.

Alderweireld is thought to prefer a move to the Premier League but any move by Roberto Martinez may be contingent on him selling John Heitinga.

"We have received an offer," the Dutch club's director of football, Marc Overmars, told De Telegraaf. "We won't give any names as we are still in talks.

"But, just like with Norwich City earlier, I expect we can work out a deal with this club."

So it looks like Martinez has already spent his budget....around £6m. You would think with a new manager in charge and the MASSIVE Sky money increase we would at least have double that this year. Just wait for them last minute sales now then!

Agree with James #416. We need a playmaker in the center of midfield. Shouldn't be a cheap one either. How do we only have 6 million to spend?

There is a common myth that the TV money has come in this season. You only receive your share at the end of the season. I.e. we got approx £51 million in May for last season. We won't get the extra money until May next year. I'd rather we waited for it then than borrow money at a premium like Bill usually does in anticipation of the tv money.

Dan #499, the TV money is paid in various installments.
- The "membership" fee (equal to all clubs, 25% of total domestic deal) is paid in 2 equal installments, August and January.

- Facility fees (for appearing on live TV, now about £875k per game, guaranteed minimum 10) are paid quarterly or as earned (not sure)

- Overseas TV deal (which has also seen a large increase) is paid monthly

- Prize money (50% of total domestic deal) is paid at season end

That midfield is woefully inadequate. Passing, scoring and tackling is quite poor and will let us down again this year unless Martinez does something quickly.

Central/defensive midfield definitely needs more cover. We are very exposed if Gibson is injured.

Lads, Are we all in denial or what. Last year we lost out on possible Champions league spot because we gave away sloppy late goals. How many clean sheets did we have. We need a defensive midfielder who can also play football to protect our ageing centre halfs and launch constructive attacks.

Just seen interview on SSN with the man himself, and player has had three offers in the P.L. - Everton, Newcastle & Tottenham.

Desperate for a player like this, I can see Gibson being out a lot this season, and he would add some much needed passing ability to our team.

Nothing decided at the minute, but I would have thought having a couple of Belgians at the club may sway his decision.
