Hull emerge as potential suitors for Anichebe

 Comments (71)  jump
Hull City are eyeing Victor Anichebe but "may struggle" to find the funds to buy the 25 year-old if Steve Bruce decides to go for him.

The 25 year-old finished last season as Everton's first-choice striker but has yet to start a game in the Premier League under Roberto Martinez, although he could get a run-out against Stevenage in tomorrow evening's League Cup second round tie.

I think Vic was born to play for Hull.

I've actually got a bit of a slight soft spot for them, for the reason that they play in the same kit as my last Sunday League side. Very nice, it was. But anyway...

I think Hull were after him a few seasons back, when Mr Brown was the manager. He's just a Hull kind of guy, I guess.

Kev (#648)

I wonder whether the word 'Anichebe' has anything to do with tigers, in the Nigerian tongue? If this is the case, it is kind of 'serendipity', but even if it doesn't, like you say, I think they are made for each other.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr eat!

I can see where people are coming from regarding selling Anichebe on, for me he will never be a good enough player for the Premier League, goals record, technique ect ect is awful and a very questionable attitude on too many ocassions and will probably never reach the 10 goal mark in a Premier League season.

But I am going to be a little worried if we start deciding that now, with less than a week of the transfer window left, is a clever time to start losing more squad players, plus as is expected Fellaini.

I really do hope Martinez has something up his sleeve if one or two players do go, we have a small squad as it is.

If needs be can we organise a whip round to make sure Hull have sufficient funds to take this big lump of lard off our hands?? No more suited to the Premier League than I am!! And I suspect Hull won't be playing in it for too long!!

Victor did okay for us last season and doesn't deserve the comments on this thread.I don't think he fits in the Roberto project but neither do most of the squad. Jelavic doesn't look like he has a goal in him so I'd start Vic with Kone.

It won't happen though. Vic should do himself a favour and go.

Mark Stewart
682 Posted 28/08/2013 at 01:33:59
His attitude sucks and he has glass limbs but do we really want to be selling forwards at this stage of the window with no sign of anyone coming in?

Martinez has already told us not to expect to see Deulofeu until January (please explain?) and with Kone and Jelavic yet to fire I can see no sense in letting Vic go.

A couple of seasons ago I would have asked how much do they want to take him but last season I thought he was much improved and think he can still do better.

Hull would be a good move for him though as he's still not good enough for consistent EPL starts but my concern would be that would only leave us with Kone and Jelavic, neither of who inspire confidence at the moment.

Who do we get in for backup considering that we'd likely not get very much for Vic?

James Stewart

If you seriously think Anichebe is good enough to play for Everton Football Club, then we may as well all pack up and go home!!

"Much improved"......."did okay for us"........ Do me a favour and learn your history. He's as bad as any "striker" to ever play for us in my 40 years watching and trust me there's been some duffers in that time!!
"Big Vic" is shit. Next.....

When Vic first came through from the youth side he was an absolute beast: strength, pace and an eye for goal. It's disappointing that he hasn't become the player he could have been. In a way, I suppose if you are 20-odd and earning £20k (?) plus per week motivation is difficult. And I mean that sincerely- if I'd already earned x millions I'd find it difficult to get up and out of my (gigantic-filled-with-hookers)bed in the morning too.

Lets face it, Last year was Anichibe's best year for sometime,
If any promoted or Championship club (4 games in ) had wanted him, he would have been gone.
I notice Spurs still signing players, certainly a better looking side with the sale of Bale, if only we could have sold Anichebe and Osman, we also would look a better side.

Think Vic is being treated very unfairly.

Ok he's not a world beater but I do think he puts the effort in.

If he has any problems they are due in the most part to a lack of confidence which, as a young man in his early 20's, earning £100,000's per year, I'd take any day versus a Daniel Sturridge or Royston Drenthe etc.

I love it when Vic bosses centre halves and he's doing it more and more regularly. I think he will be a late bloomer and we will see the best of him as he becomes sure of himself in his late twenties.

Vic was great in patches last year and some of the flak on here is undeserved. He may lack in finesse but he's a real handful and his time/goal ratio was surely the highest by some margin at the club last year? Moreover as already pointed out he's 1 of 3 senior strikers (with the other two misfiring or still unproven for us) if RM has an instant replacement then fair enough otherwise this is surely just idle tabloid gossip.

Why not let's wait and see if another player (possibly ruined by Moyes) gets a dose of confidence and starts playing a bit. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is the answer to our problems in front of goal, but we shouldn't just dismiss him.
Most of Howard Kendall's FA cup winning side were garbage prior to the FA cup success. They went on to become champions. All it took was some positivity, confidence (and a dose of luck) to transform some mediocre players into legends. We should learn lessons from past glories.

Victor is unplayable at times and has scored goals for us that no-one else could score. He's the strongest hold-up striker in the entire division and played well and ran his arse off for us last season.

Yet because he didn't play well shunted out on the right wing three years ago everyone wants to keep having a pop.

Selling Victor would be stupid. As is the constant 'easy-target' sniping against him by his own fans.

Andrew Ellams
743 Posted 28/08/2013 at 09:18:51
Actually Mike some of the best football I have seen from Vic was on the right wing before he got done by Kevin Nolan. I still think if he had been available to play instead of Osman in the Cup Final we would have seen a different game that day.

Marcus Bent was the English Strac. I don't think he could believe his luck when Everton signed him, plenty of effort but just not good enough.

Beattie belongs in a different category to some of these guys, he had more talent than most of them but was a lazy waste of space. If he had put in the effort of Strac he could have been immense for us

Andrew #766, I have to defend Mad Mik here. Mainly because he only ever seemed to score at away grounds in London, and I happened to be living there! He was capable of the sublime (finishes away at Tottenham, Palace) to the ridiculous (missed sitter at Anfield).

In fact, that Anfield derby we were 1-0 up, and he missed an open goal. 30 seconds later Ince equalised and I think that's when Everton fans turned against him.

A few years later I was in Paris and was given tickets to the French League Cup final. Mik Madar was playing for PSG against some 2nd division fishing village called FC Gugnon (not sure of spelling). A former housemate was from said village, so got me the ticket on the proviso I supported them. Mik was missing - not sure if through injury or strop - and PSG tanked 0-1!

What planet are some people on? If Fellaini goes we'll have 2 senior centre mids and Barkley, one of which is highly injury prone, yet you want to get rid of Osman just because you don't like him? He was one of our better players last season but just because he's looked a tad off the pace in our first two games (not that he's done anything wrong in them) he has no chance of adapting to Martinez's system. Its the same sort of knee jerking that hails Barkley as our king after two decent games. The reality is if anyone in our midifeld is going to adapt to Martinez's system it will be Osman who has the touch technique and passing range rather than Fellaini who has none of these. Mirallas has looked like a fish out of water as well but not a word is said. His half a season of decent performances seem to have bought him more credit in the bank than Osman's entire season of consistently high performance (yes there was a dip in the middle but lets not extrapolate it out unecessarily even though I know lots of you will), or perhaps its his foreign name and media image that achieves that, god knows its worked for Fellaini all these years. Imagine if he was English, don't think everyone would be overlooking his lack of pace and footballing brain then.

Now that Neville is gone you're all just looking for a new scapegoat and with Anichebe and Naismith not playing Osman is the natural target (laughably its probably Pienaar after that, two of our best players from last season, the fickle modern fan). Anyone with half an ounce of a football brain will know that unless we suddenly go and buy two first team midfielders, one of which is able to play as a playmaker, then Osman will not be going anywhere.

As for Ancihebe he had all the gifts in the world but is always more interested in falling over for a free kick than trying to score. The problem with selling him is for the nominal fee we get for him who else could we buy in that would be any improvement on him? Unless we add that fee to some investment from the baord and buy a top striker (ha!)

Paul David

Anichebe has all the gifts in the world?
James Martin
783 Posted 28/08/2013 at 11:16:23
Yes Paul, he has height, pace, strength, and a powerful shot. Some players would kill for these attributes. His finishing is not the best but with a bit of aggression he could be such a handful for opposition defenses. Unfortunately he falls over whenever he hits a shot, in fact whenever he touches the ball he falls over, and he has no aggression whatsoever.

Matt Muzi
788 Posted 28/08/2013 at 11:18:32
If we can get a decent amount of money for Vic, sell him.

My thinking is this, while Kone & Jelly aren't firing yet, until we are able to sign a better player, they're going to be first choice, then you've got Naismith & Vellios, who could also do with either being sold or loaned out.

Further cover could be provided by Super Kev, or ,The Barca Kid & that's not considering I think Ross could do a job sat behind the striker & that's undoubtedly Osman's best position.

Any money from the sale of Vic as long as it went through in time could hopefully be used to get us some more CM in, because the last 2 league games without Gibbo have shown that's our major weak spot.

Paul David
791 Posted 28/08/2013 at 11:22:22
James

You didn't mention any technical ability, that's cos he has none. As for his physical attributes, he only puts these to good use in 1 game out of 10 at best. When you factor in his poor attitude, injuries, no movement, no football brain and fear of scoring, it all adds up to a very poor player.

Even without signing a replacement we would be better off if he was off our books. Jelavic, Kone, Mirallas, Vellios and Naismith is more than enough competition (not in terms of quality) for the one strikers role up for grabs.

James Newcombe
792 Posted 28/08/2013 at 11:26:34

James Martin
801 Posted 28/08/2013 at 12:08:10
Paul two of those players play wide for us (and have to considering we've got very few options there) That leaves us with Jelavic Kone and Vellios upfront. One of whom wasn't trusted by Moyes and one of which went through a very barren season last season.

You're rgiht about Ancihebe's failings completely. I as just amking the point that with a better mindset nature has given him every chance to become a good striker but he has seemingly wasted it.

Tony J Williams
807 Posted 28/08/2013 at 12:24:34
Mirallas could be pushed forward as a striker if worst comes to worst.

Always hoped that Anichebe could make it but he hasn't go "it"

Some games he looked like he had found "it" but then fell over and must have dropped "it" on the ground to be lost forever.....the fuck am I talking about?

Short version, keep him unless we can replace him.

The Joe Bugner of Everton (one for the teenagers there).

Agree with Tony - he just doesn't have it and I would lose not a wink if he were to go.

Might be good for him too - he's been with us since he was a kid, a change is a good...etc

Who knows, maybe he'll become be a Hull legend and seventy years from now, grandfathers will regale their grandkids with tales of the famous 'Titty-lip Tiger'

I have to admit that I've always seen Victor as a poor man's Emile Heskey. Got the bulk but lacking the football brain and usually- under Moyes- a second striker to lay it off to.

For so much of his career he has been merely the target man.A target, that is ,for those massive punts down the field from Tim Howard. Most just bounce of him or result in a free kick against him for backing into the marking defender.

He's certainly not as useless as some on here make out but at times has come pretty close to it. I think he has improved little since those early impact days and has suffered from too much money and too much indulgence by OFM.

Maybe a change of scenery might be good for him but if rumours of his £25K a week salary are anywhere accurate,I think he will be hard to shift.

Drew Shortis
845 Posted 28/08/2013 at 14:46:50
I had high hopes for Victor after a few good performances in the Europa League, but that was a loooong time ago and you can't still be hoping he will improve at 25! I had high hopes for James Vaughan too but it looks like he has found his level in the Championship and that's probably where Vic will have his best days too.

If Hull Tigers are willing to pay £5m then take it and reinvest the money in the midfielder we so desperately need. We have Vellios who is big and strong and more than capable of taking over from Vic on the bench. He has done the business as a super sub on the rare occasions we have seen him.

Considering the overall aim of a game of football is to score a goal, we have invested very little money in signing players who have a proven track record of doing so.

It is now 6 years since we signed Yakubu. Since then we have tried to polish a few turds, but how the hell can we expect to achieve success without significant investment in our forward line?

It is a sad fact that I would trade our top three strikers with the top three strikers from nearly every other club in the division.

Kenwright out.

Harold Matthews

James / Jamie. You're probably right. The worst set of strikers in the Premiership.

How on earth did we get in such a mess?

With the possible exception of Stoke, Hull and Palace I think you may well be right. I think Kone offers more than just a goal threat, but when you look at those three it is hard to see any of them getting very far into double figures, if they even reach that. If we do end up losing Fellaini perhaps Defoe would be a good option. He has pace and certainly knows where the goal is and he may be marginalised at Spurs in the season leading up to his last World Cup chance!.

Here is an idea, SELL THE CLUB.
