Everton reject reports that Baines wants United deal

 Comments (145)  jump
Everton have moved to quash media reports claiming that Leighton Baines has told the club that he wants them to conclude a deal that would take him to Manchester United before the transfer window closes.

According to Sam Wallace in The Independent – no doubt using sources from Old Trafford – the left back held talks with Roberto Martinez on the first day of pre-season and made clear his desire to follow David Moyes to United for the promise of Champions League football.

Since then, Everton have rejected two bids of £12m for the England international, with sources suggesting the club are holding out for closer to £18m.

If it's true that the player himself is agitating for the move — and there is plenty of doubt from sources on Merseyside that this is even the case; the feeling is that he is happy to stay if no deal is concluded — then that might affect Everton's bargaining position, not least because the 28-year-old is entering the last two years of his contract.

The general feeling among Evertonians was that Marouane Fellaini, who was the subject of a £16m offer from United as part of a joint bid that included Baines, would be the more likely of the two players to leave this summer. If Wallace's assertion holds any water whatsoever, Everton face the possibility of losing both players before the 2nd September deadline.

As I mentioned on another thread, they should put it in writing. This bollocks is akin to telling your boss you want to leave to join a rival firm, but would like a redundancy package.

Baines, Fellaini, Bale, Rooney and Ratboy can't be struggling for cash surely?

We have to pay them to leave basically. And no doubt we'll get stuck with a portion of the agents fee.

Holding OUT for £18m!?

If there is ANY truth in that, what a joke!

Fucking ridiculous, we're basically talking about England's first choice left-back, a box-to-box player, sets up goals, scores goals and has a great free kick in him...for the price of Henderson.

He should be told "You want to go to United? Fine. Tell your pal it's£25m minimum or you're going absolutely nowhere - no ifs or buts".

Hold on Geoff Freeman (917)

Don't blame Moyes either. If Baines has asked to leave the blame lies squarely with him. He's an Everton player, with 2 years left on his contract who's asking to leave without submitting a transfer request. He should at least have the decency to submit one and save the club a few bob if he wants to go.

No one else to blame but Baines if this is true.

Really shows Everton in a poor light if both Fellaini and Baines were to be off. And for anything less than 40 million. Liverpool and Man U have shown their power against their players; even Tottenham have at least managed to screw Real Madrid for over 85 million (if reports are to be believed). Bad, bad business and shows how far Everton have fallen. Barkley will be off for 12 million next in the January transfer window. Very depressing ....

Interesting that its Sam Wallace as he's written a lot of articles favourable to David Moyes, not least the one he wrote at the weekend backing Moyes' behaviour regarding the bid for Fellaini and Baines. The question I would really like to know is where is Sam Wallace's source from, Moyes, Baines or Everton. If I was to put money on it, at the minute I would say Moyes.

If it's true, let the lad go. It's a pity every time we put together talented players other teams with deeper pockets can take them. I's a pity the game is dying. I'm pretty bored with the Prem. I am sure with all the young talent that gets discarded by these over inflated Premier League teams, we could create a league of city teams that play in a league that is not run by the FA. It might not have the money but I bet it would be exciting. The FA-led Premier League is killing our beautiful game.

I m still amazed that there are people that do not understand the influence of age, and remaining length of contract have a players value.

If he had signed the new deal he was offered in July (according to RM), then his fee would definitely be around 30 million. But as it stands, he hasn't signed a new deal, which effectively means at the end of next year he can talk to any club he likes over a free transfer. Playing hardball over the price now means you will have a pissed off player on your hands, who you will effectively lose for nothing in future. I think 15-18 million would be a fair fee.

Despite being late in the window and difficult to spend, the problem, as ever is that if Baines goes the money won't necessarily go to the manger. We must be net positive in transfers over the last few seasons regardless of the new TV money which is being spent by all and sundry including Southampton, sorry fucking Southampton who have spent 36m. Why do we even have a board that draw salaries. They're fucking parasites bleeding the club dry.

Ged- Loyalty isn't really something that should be debated. Baines or Fellaini are not fans- it is their job. People shouldn't expect loyalty- like in any job, he has been offered an element of career progression, so wants to take it. This in itself isn't really news. At least Martinez has known this since the first day of pre season, so some kind of plan will be formulated.

Of course, Everton do still hold cards, but I would have thought if they are offered £35m for the pair then that will be a deal.

Whatever happens, Baines has always performed well and acted professionally at Everton and I for one would wish him all the best.

Where's the money,Bill? Nicholas @ 942 asks. Well,if he's referring to the TV cash,I imagine that was borrowed against last season. If you are talking of the possible transfer cash from Man U.,it will only amount to about £ 17.5M (the half up front) and will come in too late to sign anybody but a couple from Wigan.

If Baines does want to go, fair enough. He has only a couple of years playing at his very best left. He has been incredible for us, but if he wants to play Champions League and have a shot of winning the Premiership, fair enough.

2 things though.

If he really wants to go then he needs to hand in a transfer request, thereby waving his pay off.

Manu need to stump up the £20 mil he's worth (maybe £18 mil if he was to put in the request).

Baines won't pull a strop and refuse to play and so we have the upper hand (if the board wants it).

If this is true, I'll be as shocked as anyone else. As Darren (936) says this is the third time, just before a match that this has happened.
One part of me hopes this is only Machiavellian Man. U. Moyes initiated phishing, but the other is thinking " there's no smoke, without fire "
At the end of the day, we have to deal with it, whichever way we can. This is one situation where the Chairman should come out of his closet, and make some sort of declaration, whether it be of resistance, (fat chance) or indeed to dispel any such stories, and put the fans in a position, of at least knowing where they stand.
That term " Loyalty Bonus " is a joke, in these modern football times, the only ones with any loyalty are the fans, but there again they don't really matter do they ?
Jim Hillier
963 Posted 28/08/2013 at 18:52:45
Bit of an odd story, since it says the request predates the Man Utd bids that have been turned down. In which case, it is not a story at all, but a bit of out of date gossip that is neither here nor there.

If he wants to go, genuinely, then he should put in a formal request, and Martinez should drop him and play Oviedo. Fuck anyone who does not want to play for us.

Dan

Thank you so much for that explanation of how contracts work I feel enlightened and can put my silly misguided objections to selling the player with the most assists in Europe, the current England left back to our former manager on the cheap.

Here is an alternative scenario we took a leaf out of some other clubs book and say they aren't for sale and tell players under contract to get on with it. I am sure Baines and Fellani have it in their own interests to play well this season if they want to play in the world cup and possibly get their transfer next season.

Selling players below their true value to our hypocritical ex manager might not piss the two players off but it would piss off Evertoinians well most anyway, apart from those more concerned with their adoration for the ginger one.

Mirror are reporting that Moyes has improved his offer for both players (LB & MF) to £38m. But Everton want to know how much it is for each player. I think it is more likely both will go as the Daily Mirror has videos of both players within the story LB's is entitled 'Best Left Back in The World?" and MF's :Unplayable"

Apparently Spurs have joined the chase for McCarthy and Wigan want a minimum of £15m rising to £20m.

Bit strong Albert. It is his job after all. Making some libelous suggestions isn't exactly the same is it? Their is no smoke without fire and I imagine that Baines does want the move. Look at the report in the telegraph today. I don't think it is total rumour mongering whether or not it is 100% true or not.

Paul,

Lahm plays as a RB or LB. He's played loads of games for club and country in both positions and is pretty much the dogs bollocks in both positions.

Jordi Alba is better than baines as well.

I would say Baines is the best in the EPL though at LB

For those arguing about Philipp Lahm he generally plays left back for the German national team and right back for Bayern. He is in general a right back back but when he got to the national team they played him left because Germany have always been strong on the right hand side.

I would be more disappointed if Baines left than if Fellaini did, but would understand his desire to move more

He is older and has less time to play at the highest level. That said, if he is to go the deal has to be right for Everton. He has 2 years left on his contract, he will still be worth a fair whack next summer so really we are in a strong position with him.

Hope he stays, but in the past selling big players has helped to move the squad on a way that league positioning wont as the financial gains are much greater. I suppose it could be dubbed the Moyes way of Everton management!

Phil Roberts @972

Yes, Phil, a change at the top. The only power a supporter has is to remove his support. I accept that this is unlikely to bring about the level of change that is required to put Everton back as a power in football, especially now that Sky own football and Sky's money compensates for the flat cap wearing, working mans miniscule investment in our club and football in general, but it just might make us feel a bit better. Knowing that Tiny Tears has no-one clapping him when his grid appears on the Jumbotron in the corner of the ground.

Wood, Earl and the vacant Green couldn't point to Goodison on a map but if someone pointed out an empty stadium with tumbleweed blowing through it, it might help them to piss off without the massive return on their "investment" that they hoped for. (Or that Bill promised them)

When Untd, Moyes, Baines and Fellaini turn up here next April, I hope the *welcome* they get makes the shit Rooney had thrown at him look like a fond adieu....still point (1) still might apply...Bitter in advance - Yes, but like OFM says He knows how Everton work and boys pen billy has years of previous for this....* not holding breath *

This sounds like more newspaper selling lies. They need to sell their poisonous little opinion rags somehow. Kenwright needs to stand his ground this time and either get a £40m+ fee or tell United to do one. Both players have a contract and I can't see either of them refusing to play in a World Cup year, even if they are a little miffed. I'm not convinced either of them is determined to leave. Liverpool have stood firm on Suarez, we should show the same resolve or we will just be confirming our status as United's feeder club.

Who has actually said Baines has asked for a Utd deal other than Man Utd scare-mongering, shit-stirring press machine ???

According to RM it’s not true...just another shithouse tactic from ’Bollyeyes’ Moyes and his gang of merry men to unsettle our player

Kenwright should get on the blower and in no uncertain terms tell Moyes & Man Utd to FUCK RIGHT OFF !!... and finish by telling them that even if Fellaini and/or Baines are eventually sold it will NOT be to Man Utd at any time for any price.....perhaps then they will go away once & for all

Everton have a figure in mind that they need to achieve, I'd guess at £20m.

If they can get that for one of the two, so be it but if they can't they will both be off.

Everton's business model doesn't sustain £70k per week player wages and 29 year olds worth >£15m going in to the last year of their contracts.

It's pure economics unfortunately.. The problem is that no one else is in for these two so we can't pump the price up so we have to play the 'no deal' game which takes you right up until deadline day.

If Mourinho wanted to cause some mischief he could put a bid in at any time.

244 Posted 29/08/2013 at 12:22:09
James, Alba has clear defensive weaknesses, which Baines does not so overtly suffer from. It's easy to state Alba is better because he plays for Barca and Spain...How would Baines do in those teams?

Also, Spurs are not going to buy McCarthy, that's bullshit. They have Capoue, Sandro, Paulinho and Dempsey who can all operate in deep-lying positions. Newcastle are the most likely purchases in that respect imo.

And if we go into the season with Oviedo at left back, we won't finish above 10th.

Drew O'Neall
245 Posted 29/08/2013 at 12:26:53
If we had a 'friendly' club somewhere we could initiate a fake bid to consider which would either raise the stakes for Moyes or would force the players to come out and say they didn't want to join the other party implicating them and therefore forcing them to say they wanted to stay or join Man Utd, the latter move affectively forcing them to hand in a transfer request forgoing their loyalty bonus.

It's simple negotiation really and our club are shit at it.

I am sick of all this now. Just close the window, and then we can concentrate on the pitch matters. SkySports/Other Media doing their best to sell our players, a chairman who is hiding (We haven’t herd from while the window has been open) and yet he gets away with it because he stood in the boys pen! Where’s the money bill?, only reason teams are cherry picking us for everything we have is because they know we’re skint. Sick of it!

The transfer window needs to be restructured as the only beneficiaries seems to sky sports, the tabloids and agents. The window should open as soon as the season finishes and then closes sometime before the new season; 2-3 weeks for example. This will give the manager time to work with his squad.

As for arguments about teams having to go out and buy because of injuries, loss of form etc; that why teams have squads. To carry on with this non ending speculation which affects the form of not only the player but the team in general at the start of each season must come to an end.

The reality of this situation is the timing if true not the end of the world, if we can get in younger replacements. However it shows more lack of respect that Baines , if true, waited till the last few days to blow his big secret. Seems that a conspiracy by a ginger highlander with no respect for the clan he used to be supported by.

What a load of nonsense. I just read the following on the Daily Tory about this:

"Leighton Baines has pleaded with Everton to grant him his dream move to Manchester United, according to reports."

Pleaded? Dream move? His dream move was to Everton in 2007 and would massively doubt that he would agitate for a move .

He may well be open to signing for Utd, but who wouldn't be, especially at this stage of his career? If we get a good enough offer I'm sure we'll sell him (and Fellaini) because everyone has their price, but clearly the club want Baines to stay as we all do so it might not happen at all.

As others have said, the transfer window should be closed once the season starts - but this is of course complicated by each countries leagues starting at different times.

Tough one.

Al Reddish
274 Posted 29/08/2013 at 14:19:01
Martinez has not actually denied it. He said it's speculation and we will deal with it and questioned where the leak had come from. He was directly asked if Baines had asked for a transfer and he didn't give a yes or no.
Patrick Murphy
278 Posted 29/08/2013 at 14:33:45
There's an easy solution, the English FA shouldn't start the season until the transfer window is closed. Then UEFA can't complain about it affecting their competitions. Why does the January window have to be so long? Why not have a window for a week to 10 days.

On another matter how can it be right that Professional Footballers Association CEO Graham Taylor is allowed to keep his job if as is alleged he has staked in the region of £4m worth of bets in two and half years, including bets on football?

How many other people in senior administrative positions are gambling on football?

James Marshall
285 Posted 29/08/2013 at 14:43:34
Patrick - how would that help? Each European league starts at different times and due to the laws of freedom of movement for workers across Europe, you can't enforce one single rule on England and not on everyone else.

It's a lot more complicated than simply saying no English club can do business when other countries can.

Robert Workman

On a lighter note (?), does anyone really believe that, if Leighton Baines had been planning on leaving Everton, he would have come out (along with Jagielka and Robles) to meet the fans in the Main Stand after the Austria Vienna friendly? Let alone would he have almost insisted (OK, insisted may be a bit strong!) on having his photo taken with me?

PS. Lahm used to play left back before the Austrian Wunderkid - David Alaba - joined Bayern Munich. His versality, in my book, makes him the best full back in the world.

Robert 309, that was a hundred years ago in football politicking terms only about another 10 years to go, lots more twists and turns to come.

Personally I will be astonished if he stays.

James Marshall
318 Posted 29/08/2013 at 15:22:36
Patrick - because the transfer window alludes to the buying of players from other countries, so you can't just shut it in England because it affects the freedom of movement of players in the rest of Europe.

It does vary slightly from country to country, but if you were to suddenly say that English clubs couldn't buy anyone from say, Italy the day before the Premier League starts, then that would have an effect on the Italian league as well.

You would also find that you would need to get every league to come close to agreeing on a date close to (or very close to) the start of the season for it to be a level playing field for every nation - this is where it gets complicated because each league starts at different times.

It's a really tricky thing to balance out.

No James I'm saying that the English FA don't start their season until the window has expired thereby not affecting any other nation or freedom of movement.

EG window shuts 2nd September, PL starts 3rd September onwards.

If clubs want games before the PL season starts have a few rounds of the League Cup.

James Marshall
327 Posted 29/08/2013 at 15:38:29
The issue with that is that other European countries/teams will still be able to buy players for a longer period while our clubs can't = never going to be agreed to.

Our clubs would be put at a disadvantage over the rest of Europe.

Robert Workman

Barry 316 - I still hope that he will not use that photo as an excuse for leaving! I shall have to delete it from Facebook if he goes - or send it to a Man Utd friend so that I can be airbrushed out, along with the Everton badge on LB's shirt!

Why not ban clubs from buying/selling in their OWN league? They could still sell/buy to/from Madrid or Barca but not Utd, City, Shite etc. Less disruption to our clubs.
Patrick Murphy
350 Posted 29/08/2013 at 16:29:32
James it DOES NOT impinge on the rest of Europe if our FA start their games AFTER the WINDOW closes. That's my last serious attempt to get my point across.
James Marshall
359 Posted 29/08/2013 at 16:42:55
A novel idea, Patrick ;-)

Sorry, I was getting a bit bogged down with the ins & outs rather than listening to your pleas!

You're right of course, that would make things much simpler. Seeing as all the major leagues transfer windows end within about 3 days of each other, they should just agree on an earlier date.

I don't know if moving the start of our league season would be accepted by the FA - there would be fixture pile-ups wouldn't there?

James Carlisle

The Guardian have reported the offer as £36m (not the Indie said "about £38m). So, the new combined bid amounts no no more than the lapsed £23.5m buy out amount, plus £12m for Baines (YET AGAIN!) with a massive £500k sweetener thrown on top. Quite rightly EFC told them to do one. I'm hoping that with their tough Champions League draw Arse flash the chequebook and steal Felli from under Moyes nose with a bid in excess of £25m.

Tonight's Guardian, note Martinez distancing himself from whatever happens next:

Despite his stance that Everton do not want to sell Baines or Fellaini, Martínez said the club must be "prepared for anything" before Monday's transfer deadline and made the significant admission that negotiations will be left to Kenwright and United. "I am not aware of it," he said of an improved United bid. "I have told the chairman I don't want to know anything that's going on, I only want to know the final news if there is anything.

If they've bid just over Fellaini's release clause then it's amateur hour at United. They could have had this sewn up in a straightforward manner a month ago without all of this fucking around!

Thanks for the heads up on the guardian article. Interesting quote there from Roberto: "I have had enough of 'he said this, he said that'. This is a really sensitive situation because you're talking of a chairman and previous manager [Moyes] who had a relationship over 11 years. A lot of things have been said in public and I don't want to be part of that. I'm out of it. But I have never had any instruction that anything has changed."
