Now it's £7M plus Zaha for Baines

 Comments (71)  jump
The latest spin on the Baines transfer saga comes from the Daily Express, which claims that Manchester United are are now weighing up a package deal comprising of Wilfried Zaha and £7million for Everton left-back Leighton Baines.

David Moyes is supposedly ready to let £15M Zaha go just months after he joined from Crystal Palace, while the Express claims that Moyes will finally land England international Baines in the January transfer window, with unidentified "recent reports" said to suggest that the Toffees will do business with United to the tune of £7M plus Zaha.

Both ESPN and the Express are reporting this one. Must admit it's the most interesting rumor yet.

Obviously Moyes doesn't rate Zaha as highly as SAF, who paid £15 million for him just a few months ago.

If Baines wants to go, and I mean IF, I'd take the Zaha plus 7mil deal.

I'd:

move Mirallas on to the left
Zaha on the right
Pienaar cover for the wingers & Barkley
Osman reduced to cameo's
7mil on a new left back
what change we have from the summer on a central midfielder & left-sided central defender
sell Heitinga, Gueye and Jelavic and buy a striker
sign Barry permanently in the summer

I'd make a superb football manager

The thought of Baines going to Man United would break my heart, but if he has his heart on a move I think this will happen in January.

We are getting closer and closer to the transfer and their is no sign of a new deal in place.

Zaha is a good young player and I feel the deal would not be so bad with him included in it.

I watched Zaha for Palace last year against Borough. He was outstanding, so much better than everyone else. Of course league 1.....

When I watched his cameo for England recently he looked hopeless and lacking confidence, I recall thinking, Crickey it did not take long for the ginger jock twat to ruin him...

Not a deal that appeals to me, not one bit. Would Zaha embrace it with enthusiasm..... Doubt it

Wouldn't rate zaha at more than 7m. 16m plus zaha I'd maybe consider. 16 m plus Zaha and Hernandez and he's yours!

Don't want Zaha in any deal for Baines. It must be a striker because we will be losing Lukaku for sure. Hernandez could be a goer in a deal but we would still want cash as well

Not sure Zaha has the right character but anyone is better than Mirallis who reduces us to ten men four games out of five. Forget Hernandez. His value rating is probably higher than that of Baines.

Kagawa is the sort of player we need. It's Leon Osman with pace, better vision and stamina.

Zaha looks to have it all, but is that enough without the right attitude?

Deffo take Zaha, bags of skill, young and with a point to prove could see him flourishing under Martinez at goodison

Plus he knows the english game (big reason why I wanted Martinez) whereas Kagawa looks a fish out of water - he looks a "Bily" to me.

I know this sounds like one of those "my milkman's cousin told me" stories, but my friend's brother is involved with a band that Baines went to meet backstage at a gig in Liverpool within the past few weeks. Baines told my friend's brother, a Man. Utd. fan, that he is "desperate" to join United in January and that he thinks something might very well happen in terms of a deal being agreed between the clubs.

I don't begrudge Leighton the chance to make more money with one big contract before he reaches 30, but this leaves a bad taste in the mouth to think that he doesn't think by staying with us he can reach the Champions League. Maybe he should look to how Fellaini has gone from being a popular talisman to a much maligned squad player, all to play the illustrious clubs like Sociedad and Leverkusen and pick up some extra thousands per week on top of the thousands he already earned. I always considered more glory in being instumental in bringing a team from lower in the table to greater things than joining an already champion team and slotting in there. That's why I could never understand how Rooney could leave. It's sad to think that money over-rides sporting glory nowadays.

Errol, the same type of my friend's mate's ma story was on Facebook in which Baines' s mum supposedly said he is staying and thrashing out a new contract. I know which one I want to believe.

No way Kagawa would come here. Class act though but BVD would take him back in a heartbeat if United put him on the market.

Zaha plus £7m? No.

Get real Moyes or fuck off

482 Posted 07/11/2013 at 00:41:46
Tony, I know which I'd prefer to believe too but I have no reason to make up this story, as I don't like hearing it myself. Whether he told them he was desperate to join United because they (my friend's brother plus one of the band members who Leighton is in regular contact with) are United fans who were having banter with him about signing for United, is a possibility, but he has apparently been telling them of this desire to join United, for some time now. I sincerely hope it doesn't come to pass but to me at least, it seems that it is very much on the cards.

I've seen Zaha look outstanding (didn't he put in a nice cameo in the Charity Shield - I wasn't paying too much attention) but many on here seem to be have concerns about his attitude and consistency (linked problem?). Without the right attitude he is unlikely to settle with us (another London boy who loses himself outside the big city?).

On first sight, this looked quite a promising scenario to me (assuming that LB will be exiting in January no matter what) but I have to admit I don't know enough about the lads personality to have huge confidence in that opinion.

Kagawa is in a different league to Zaha and would be wanted by a host of Champions League teams if made available. Besides which Barkley plays on Kagawa's preferred position.

I think we need a striker a winger and central midfield cover. How about Hosiner, Ince and Banega in January?

Steven Telford
516 Posted 07/11/2013 at 09:57:45
Our squad at the moment has a sort of as close a "complete feel" to it as it has for a long time. All but for Lukaku being on loan our squad has almost no weaknesses (once everybody turns up); we are a cracking team.

If Baines has to leave, let's try to insist on it being in the summer, to give us time to maintain that completeness as best we can. Then in the summer, sign a top left back, a striker (Lukaku if possible) give Barry a 1- or 2- year deal, bleed Stones in for Distin.

Ross Edwards
519 Posted 07/11/2013 at 10:55:59
Sam, let's be sensible, mate, regarding strikers. If we are in a push for Europe, surely a 20-year-old Austrian is not enough for cover to Lukaku.

Ince and Benega I agree with, but we need someone better and more experienced than Hosiner.

Defoe? He's hardly used by Spurs and he'd want a last push for the England squad for Brazil.

SAF was no mug when it came to spotting talent. He paid £15m for Zaha which may be a little too much but, make no mistake, this lad is a player. Baines will definetly go in January so why not take a player plus cash exchange?

At the end of the day, if we recieve a cash lump sum for LB it will go straight to the banks. Let's say we get £20m for Baines – how much of that would the manager get to spend?

Zaha has pace, scores goals and is very skillfull everything Moyes doesnt want in a player.£10m plus Zaha would be a good bit of buisness if we resign ourselves to the fact Baines will go and with any cash not being made available to RM, then it's a no-brainer.

Despite his age, I would want around £25 million for him. Considering Zaha struggles to make Man Utd's bench, I would not consider anything less than £15 million and the player. Zaha and Hernandez yes. But we would then still be dependent on Kenwright making the money available from the Anichebe and Fellaini sales to buy us a left back and central midfielder.

I don't begrudge Baines, utter class for us on and off the pitch and he deserves the experience of challenging for honors, but Man Utd? This is not a wish to see Moyes and Round fall flat on there faces, but I genuinely believe it is the end of an era at Man Utd. Too many players over or approaching 30 in that squad that need replacing and Moyes is not the manager to do it.

Tony J Williams

Ross, 519. Have you ever actually seen Hosiner play and what has his being Austrian got to do with anything?

No top, top striker is going to want to come in to be second choice to Lukaku anyway. Better off going for someone young(ish) who is happy to cover knowing if he does well he may be first choice next season.

Jim Harrison
551 Posted 07/11/2013 at 15:12:44
Sorry, but why would Hernandez move to Everton? He is frequently linked with Madrid and is a Champions league level striker. He would cost 15 million at least on his own. Now Valencia, Zaha and 7 million would do the job for me.
Paul Ellam
555 Posted 07/11/2013 at 15:16:46
I agree with your idea Sam. Can't see Lukaku stopping so we need to have a plan set up for his replacement (if he stays - bonus!)
Hosiner not a bad shout. Jelle Vossen bang in form and my personal favourite and maybe 1 from the following list - Jermain Defoe, Graziano Pelle, Dario Cvitanich, Alfred Finnbogason, Filip Djordjevic, Luc Castaignos, Dusan Tadic, Kevin Volland, John Guidetti and Demba Ba.
We may need 2 strikers as Kone and Jelavic aren't contributing much just now so if money is available in January I would get Defoe (short term fix) and Vossen (long term fix) keep Jelavic and try move Kone on.

Zaha was widely criticised for his performances and attitude in the recent under 21 tournament that cost Pearce his job. His stock has certainly crashed in the last 6 months. Better waited with at the moment I think and see if he regains his spark, because he was an excellent player last season.
James Stewart

If Baines wants to move then we have to find the best deal. 15m plus Zaha would be the absolute minimum. If Baines doesn't push for a move we have to move the earth to keep him.

Defoe would not move out of London and the likes of Vossen would be a risk. No telling if he could do it in the EPL. Would prefer us to go for someone like Lallana. Cracking little player and a blue as well. Would allow Mirallas to play as a striker.

Can't believe anyone is even considering taking another Manc cast-off.

If he's not good enough for them, why is he good enough for us?

This cozy bollocks relationship needs to be terminated ASAP. Who's next? Barkley, with Giggs & Anderson thrown in?

If Baines wants to leave then that's his decision and I will respect it, but the days of taking their rejects should be long behind us.

£17 - 20m for Baines, and lest our manager spend that money how he sees fit. Let the likes of Zaha go to Sunderland, or some other bottom half team if he's not good enough for those twats.

When Zaha was available to buy from Palace these pages were full of people criticising the club for not buying him. Now, just because he is coming from OFM he is a manc cast-off with an attitude problem, he is the same player he was 6 months ago, some people are simply too fickle, and desperate to whinge.

As for Manc cast offs, I think Gareth Barry is pretty good actually.

If we are supposed to be matching teams like Arsenal, Liverpool or Spurs, we have to start finding our own players, and not be looking the Utd reserve bench.

Ask yourselves one question - would any of the above teams be looking for cast-off's?

Skint or not, we should be looking for our own players.

For the record - Howard, Saha, Gibson and Neville were all lazy purchases, and mid-table signings.

Wenger has had a minus net spend for years - he's not looking for the Neville's of this world, and neither should we.

Barry is a completely different signing, or did we part-ex one of our best players for him?

It's not the way a top six club or manager should be doing business.

I like the sound of Vossen, but you kind of contradict yourself. Vossen hardly plays in a very competitive league. We have to take a risk on a striker which isn't proven at the highest level, unless we are willing to spend £15 million plus.

This would be amazing for us going forward.

Baines is 29 and his heart isn't with Everton anymore so he can go for all I care.

Zaha is one for the future which would really help especially considering our lack of quality wingers.

£7 mil would really help us (as well as the change out of the Fellaini deal) to strengthen our midfield and our woeful defence.

Everyone is saying that they would rather Hernandez but Lukaku is well better. Yes, I know we are losing him at the end of the season but would you really sit out a brilliant striker because he is going to leave. Let him get us into Europe first; then focus on bringing in a new striker.

Jim Harrison
671 Posted 08/11/2013 at 00:30:05
Kevin 645. What a ridiculous stand point. Should we be looking at Ozil or Suarez? The financial level we are at dictates the level of players we can buy. Now I am not suggesting Zaha is the answer to our needs but he could be a handy addition and with good coaching could increase in value and be sold on at a profit.

All the utd players previously signed improved the squad at the time. Whilst Barry is a good player he also cost 6 million for one season.

To deem surplus players from top clubs as not worthy of ours is a tad foolish. Forlan, De Rossi are both examples of players who have gone on to have successful careers at a high level after. I would take either in an instant. At Chelsea Parker, SWP, Duff, Robben all got shipped off.

Kevin Tully

Jim - as soon as all the other big clubs start letting their best players leave for reserves in part-ex I'm right with you.

People use the phrase 'small time' and deals like this stink of a 'small time' way of operating.

I have to say the prospect of Baines leaving in the summer felt too much to contemplate at time, he seems to have lost some of his lustre of late though.. His performances, bar worldies (thanks Mark Noble) at West Ham haven't exactly been upto his normal standard. Problem is, I can't work out if this the result of sulky attitude induced dip in form or a Martinez inspired change in the way the team is playing.

The figures quoted plus Zaha seem good to me. We need an injection of pace and Zaha was electric for Palace. I also think in the long run if, and it is a big if, Zaha fulfils his undoubted potential the deal could be seen as a great coup and one over on ofm - which would be aceness!

Kevin Tully
712 Posted 08/11/2013 at 10:26:20
Phil - If Martinez wants Zaha, that's a different ball game.

If however, a player he doesn't want is being forced upon him whilst our best player is heading in the opposite direction, then it stinks.

I'm sure Martinez would want the £17m or whatever and then make a decision who he wants.

If Zaha was playing for the first team every week, it might make more sense, but he's not even included in their squads FFS!

I've had enough of this cosy relationship anyway - Barkley will be next.

Roberto doesn't have to worry if he's wearing jeans when summoned to Fergie's palace anyway, so I hope it is the end of us being their unofficial academy.

Phil Sammon

Agree with all of that Kevin. Not to change the topic but I believe our relationship with Man Utd has been great for the club. Howard, Neville, Gibson have brought the right mentality to Everton and I think we did well to get them when we did. Ok, Neville in particular has had his ups and downs, but I think his experience and professionalism has rubbed off on others. I'm sure Seamus Coleman for example has a lot to thank him for.

Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

I agree with Kevin, apart from about Barkley. Unlike Baines, he is still very young.

I'm (like everyone else now) fed up with this continued talk; it must be affecting the players.

The Baines saga has a whiff of the Moyes contract saga. I think he hasn't signed one it is because he doesn't want to. In that case, we should call an end to the talk and let him go in January.

I agree with a number of comments, Baines (barring at West Ham) isn't what he was. Just go for £20 million so Martinez can get who he wants

Kevin Tully
724 Posted 08/11/2013 at 12:01:33
In the past Phil, yes, but I'm hoping Martinez has his own targets in mind - Look at the bargains he brought into that Wigan squad.

As I said, what other top 6 side does business this way? We should be financially stable (for a few weeks anyway!!) taking the last window into consideration, and even more so if we sell Baines.

I actually believe that meff Ferguson was telling the ginger gobshite what Utd players to take off his hands, who knows what was discussed over the years?

Paul David
725 Posted 08/11/2013 at 12:37:27
Zaha is probably available for transfer anyway so if Martinez does like him then pay cash for him. We don't want to sell Baines so if Utd want him then we should use him to get a player that Utd would rather keep. I think there's a decent chance Hernandez would come to us seeing as its a world cup year.

A lot of people seem to forget that Barkley last season was not even included in the squad and he was bags of potential.

I would take Zaha simply because Ferguson rated him, so therefore he must have something about him. United are not going to sell Zaha and the best we could hope for in any transfer is a loan for him. Look at how old Cleverley, Welbeck and the like were when they were loaned out. It would not make financial sense for them to sell him so soon, and can see him spending 6-18 months on loan in the premier league and walking into their team afterwards.

There won't be many strikers available in January due to it being world cup year and every one of them if they are at the quality we should be after will be playing for their respective clubs.

The question should be, not who should we sign but who is actually decent who is not playing first team football. Personally in an ideal world we would sign De Brune for around 7 and then bring someone like Ba in on a reletively cheap deal if/when Drogba and Schieder comes in to replace them. Young player with massive potential and a striker who can score a goal out of nothing. Perfect for the money we have, with the rest disappearing.

James Wilson

People keep saying they want the cash so it's up to Martinez but we aren't gonna get anywhere near £22 mil in cash so I don't know what everyones talking about.

Zaha adds more value to the deal than we would get in cash, so I don't know what the problem is.

No sale at all unless he want's to go and won't sign a new deal, then if so we get the best price possible for cash, no swappsies Moyes' cast off'slet Roberto build his own team.

In my opinion, Baines's body language has been poor most of the season and he has that languid look of a man who is simply going through motions. It's a pity Oviedo doesn't appear any good otherwise I think RM would have rested him by now. Zaha would be ideal addition to a team that lacks pace.
