Everton among others trying for Dempsey on loan

Everton would certainly seem to be Dempsey's most likely destination... Spurs had no place for him when he was sold to MLS, and Villa and Fulham are going nowhere. But with Kone out, we have minutes available.

IF... IF... he can get healthy and game fit by January, he's a potential alternative as a second striker. But his calf injury recurred this week to rule him out of the upcoming US friendlies, and he hasn't run without a limp in months.

Sounds like he's a bit of a crock, Mike. How many has he scored for the Sounders?

Has a touch of class but I've watched him for the Sounders and he's never looked fully fit.

Wouldn't be surprised at a like rumor regarding Landon. Klinsmann has made it clear to MLS-based players in for the US National team that they need to be in training with the season ending, not laying on a beach somewhere.

I like Clint, but if we're taking on yet another loanee, I'd prefer LD. He still got it and fit right in during his loan spells. Anyway, wouldn't surprise me if LD's spotted at Finch Farm, even if just to train with the squad.

Frankly, I'd rather our own youth get some game time. We have enough players on loan.

If we want to push on for a spot in Europe, we need players in to bulk up the squad – with Kone out it makes the need for another proven prem goalscorer all the more.

NO Dempsey, please, and definitely no Donovan as a second or third window priority at any rate. Is this really the best we can do or the highest we are aiming at? – Two aging players from a mediocre league.

I know traditionally the January window leads to less movement and in some cases higher prices, and I also know that we need more bodies up front, but Dempsey and Donovan, three years on?

I would hope that better options for the future are being bandied around the Finch Farm table and that with the – ha! – remaining sponds we have left over – ha! – that a striker of real merit with age on his side is snapped up and not a striker of decidedly mixed merit in his fourth decade who will what exactly: join us for a couple of months before going back to the equivalent of our 1st division...

Michael, Dempsey didn't score in seven appearances for Seattle after joining at midseason. The calf injury really slowed him, and he limped out of a USA practice earlier this week, so he's not healed yet.

He's anything but a crock... this is the first real injury of his career. I think he missed six games in as many seasons in the EPL. But calf and hamstring injuries are tricky when you're 30.

Earlier this year, however, he was white-hot for the USA... absolutely unplayable in the WC qualifiers... and if he can get healthy and recover that form, he'd be just what we need for a few months.

It will be quite difficult to sign him seeing as we already have three loan players.

James (151), I'll echo Mat's comment on our youth players.

As for LD, forget it. He's not quite the player we had a couple years ago, and I'd rather see Deulofeu get those minutes. Far higher upside at this point.

If he's cheap enough to get then maybe but I think our youth should get a run out too.

Regarding our youth, I should have been specific. I was thinking of Oveido and Stones, neither a teenager, getting minutes currently going to Delboy.

We could send him back to Spain in January and I'd be happy. Bad enough we are owned by people who thought dumping Wayne Rooney was sound fiscal policy, now we're paying to baby-sit some raw kid who will never sign with Everton? Towards what end?

But I'll bet you're the only TW resident who would like to see Deulofeu go back to Spain in January. About 99% of us would like to see a whole lot more of that dazzling potential on the pitch. Granted, he hasn't had much of an impact yet, but his upside is immense. And he is really fun to watch.

I'm in here as you. Pretty sure I'm not the only TW member wondering about Deulofeu. "About 99%"? C'mon now. 142%? 34%?

At a guess, 34-142% of Evertonians will be shoving themselves out of the way to storm in here and confirm the truth of that.

We'll just have to agree to agree I'm right. EFC needs to send him back where he came from and play our own.

Why get Del Boy or Lukaku; at least we have them for the season. Where Barkley and Baines could be off in January.

Contracts mean nothing these days.

I would rather see Oviedo or Kennedy play instead of the Spanish kid too tbh. Long term we are probably going to have to rely on them and so I would prefer to see them given some chances from the bench to give them some experience confidence but most importantly to see if they are up to it and if we need to sign someone in those positions or if we have a gem that could save us a fortune. Instead Barca and Delboy are reaping most of the benefits while we might get the odd goal in the league cup as a very short term benefit to ourselves.

I saw this rumour appear on Facebook 3 weeks ago, I then came on ToffeeWeb to see if it had been picked up here; I saw there was no mention if it and assumed it was dead in the water, but here it is 3 weeks down the line. My first thoughts were "No thanks", but after thinking about it a little bit more, would it not hurt to have another option?

Mike, the likes of Lukaku and Barry have already proven what they could do in the PL and were guaranteed to walk straight into the first team. It was an almost certainty that they would have a big impact on the first team. Delboy was always a gamble and going to be a bit part player. For his small contribution I would rather give our other real squad players a chance surely Oveido has earned it over the Spanish wonder kid?

I know they keep changing the rules but I think the limit on loans is 4 players. No more than 1 from the same club. We should still have 1 slot, and if push came to shove, pretty sure we could convert Barry to a permanent signing given he's in the last year (as long as Man City play ball) which would free up another slot.

Ian, Roberto doesn't think he's going to be a "bit player" or he wouldn't be making such strong public statements about him. I fail to see what the "gamble" is, since he's only a loan player and obviously a talented one. And if Roberto thought Kennedy (whom I have never laid eyes on) was better, he would be on the bench instead of Deulofeu.

Oviedo is exclusively a left-sided player whose well-deserved opportunity should come at the expense of the unproductive Pienaar, not the mostly right-flank Deulofeu. But if the overwhelming consensus about Baines is accurate, we're about to see 90 minutes of Oviedo every week anyway, starting in January.

Surely we should be going for someone more like Dembele?
