Lazy Coleman-to-United link

 Comments (45)  jump
It seems the red top Sundays are barely trying these days, as evidenced by the Sunday People's lazy attempt to convince its readers that Manchester United will bid £15M for Seamus Coleman this month.

The Irishman has enjoyed a meteoric rise to prominence this season and emerged as, arguably, the best right back in the country so speculation linking him with other clubs is inevitable.

Coming just days after another tabloid story that Everton have slapped a £25M price tag on Coleman, though, even accounting for the fact that it was David Moyes who snapped him up from Ireland for just £60k this one is surely just there to fill column inches on Monday's chip papers.

Yep, Coleman and Baines to mancunia, Delofeu to the rs, Barkley to Fulham, Jags to Brentford, Lukaku to Oldham, Martinez to manage Yeovil next season and best of all, Hibbo to Barca. See? I could be a lazy, fat arsed journalist as well.

I just read that... what a joke. Yes, Man Utd would love him but so would Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and at the fee quoted they'd be cards in tomorrow.

Truth is the tabloids especially the red tops who love easy headlines are scared of this NEW Everton. We might upset the apple cart.

How many Man Utd players apart from Rooney/RVP would make our first team?

The problem now is we have a manager who puts belief in our players to compete with the best. No fear!

I'm not saying we'll win the league but there's something special about our club and the old swagger is coming back; we no longer feel inferior to the top 4 man to man.

Who knows how far we can go but we will be up against it if we upset the established order.

They just love to keep the old "Everton player to Man Utd" theme going, don't they? Apparently the Daily Star are reporting that Man U are keeping tabs on seven-top class midfielders including Everton's Ross Barkley.

According to the BBC gossip column and the Sunday Mirror, Young Premier League stars could see their wages capped as suggested by the FA's commission into the future of English Football. How would that be achieved and would it not fall foul of some European law or other and wouldn't it be counter-productive as it could force the best young players to play elsewhere in Europe?

Patrick, a cap on salary? A salary cap? They can't do that! How would the big spending, press loving teams continue to maintain their dominance if the playing field is leveled a little bit? ; )

It's not all good news for Everton though as it means that the rich clubs would be in a race to sign the likes of Barkley before the rules come into play and another blow to Everton could be:-

The commission may also recommend curbs on the loan system, with a possible ban on the loans of foreign players or on players over a certain age:

Players make as much money from ads and sponsorship as wages these days. Society would have to change, via parliament, before this could be enforced.

What football manager would?

The amount is ludicrous perhaps in relation to what we paid for him. But that was then and this is now. Given his ability, age and time left on his contract, £15M aint much. Fellaini went for how much?

Going off thread, but Moyes on Chelsea boss's comments on Rooney via bbc...

When asked if he was disappointed by Mourinho's comments, Moyes replied: "I wouldn't do it but everybody has their own style.

"I wouldn't talk about other managers or players at other clubs."

I actually rolled my eyes like a hammed-up daytime soap actor.

Not exactly forward thinking.

After Barclays have taken their cut, RM would be left with the price of a pint and a packet of crisps (and Hibbo).

£15M for the best right back in the league and one of the best in Europe who can still improve? Just because we paid nothing for him, doesn't mean we should sell him on the cheap to make a quick profit.

Which other right back is going to get us so many goals and contribute to our forward play? If we sold him, we'd need to improve other areas of the team just to stand still....as well as buying another right back. Not to mention he's a top pro who doesn't rock the boat or have any of the baggage that comes with so many modern players.

I think he's worth more than Baines to be honest. Not to mention that we don't have a proper replacement for him, unlike with Oviedo on the left. Personally I reckon bidding needs to start at £20M

As for the loan changes I think this would work in our favour. At the moment, rich teams can hoover up all the talent, loan out the ones they can't immediately use, then keep the ones that prove to be the best.

If loans were more restricted, players would have a serious decision to make as they would be far more unlikely to be getting any football if they move to a rich club prematurely. As it is at the moment, players understand there is a high likelihood of being farmed out if they can't make the first team.

Moyes continual harking back to us and pursuit of Everton players has become a stick to beat him with among United followers particularly given the disastrous Felli transfer.

I don't think it's any coincidence the Baines interest has waned which makes this story even more incredulous.

Some daily fail moron said on Sunday supplement that clubs like Southampton should be pragmatic and sell their best players to big clubs like Manu. As I've stated on several occasions, and on several different threads, most journalists in this country are on the payroll of the richer clubs. They have no morals.

MAN OF THE PEOPLE, TOM HOPKINSON, SET FOR MOVE TO SUN.

ToffeeWeb understands that Sunday People journalist Tom Hopkinson is set to join The Sun.

Sun Supremo Rupert Murdoch is said to be a big admirer of the thoroughly lazy make-it-up-as-you-go-along journo and is thought to be ready to make a move for Hopkinson to bolster his team of scruples-free hacks.

A source thought to be a family friend..er..who is an insider..um..who is close to a scource close to Hopkinson said - "The People paid next to nothing for him when they lured him from Forum Magazine, where he cut his teeth inventing letters from ex-servicemen who were based in Singapore and were sexually schooled in ways most men can only imagine, by women who are brought up to service the needs of a man. I remember this one time.."

It is thought that The Sun's interest has come as blow to The Mail who were hoping to land Hopkinson in the summer to replace Thomas Pepper who has been forced to retire having been consumed by his own bile.

So just to recap, The Sun are ready to sign him.

VERY ready.

There is no way they could be any readier.

They are really, really, REALLY...ready.

If Moyes were still the Everton boss Coleman would be worth around £5m. Before Pochettino took over at Southampton players like Lallana, Rodriguez and Ward-Prowse would be worth no more than £3-4m each. My point here is that, when a new manager comes in who has a formula that would work at whatever club they managed, players will express themselves better and then become £10-15m players. They are the same players as before but their skills and abilities are allowed to be expressed. Right now, every Everton and Southampton player look like they could score a goal whereas before Martinez came in to the club, Moyes was constantly bemoaning the lack of a big centre forward without realising that he already had 11 attackers on the pitch but his style and formula of football suppressed that.

I don't see Man U as an attractive move for anyone currently, awfull football, huge fan expectation, and I'd say based on form and our knowledge of Moyes in games when it really counts, less chance of Champions league football next year than us.

Of course there is the wages benefit but thats about it..id be far more concerned about chelsea, man city or arsenal coming in for our players.

Agree with Stewart, It makes no sense for a player who has grown in value because he is playing in a system that suits him for a manager who rates him to leave and go play for the manager who didnt get the best out of him previously.
If only Southampton had stuck with Adkins struggled along or got relegated and we could have picked up Evertonian lalanna for buttons.. He would be tremendous in a Martinez team.

Stewart, one of Roberto's greatest assets is his positive mindset. He's unshackled the players and has allowed their creative juices to flow. So unlike he other fella who's pre-season goals were 40 points and avoid losing at any cost.
I know most of the squad are his signings but they look completely different from the regimented, almost robotic, players of last season. Viva Roberto!!

Colin #074, I think there's been tabloid hacks on the payroll of clubs for decades. Clubs have always used the media to further their agenda, unsettle targets etc. It's just now in the days of both tighter regulation (haha) and social media, it's probably even less transparent.

I wouldn't mind betting that exclusives rather than brown envelopes are the currency of the day.

It's funny how none of them have ever written that tell-all expose that lifts the lid off it. Mind you, the caricature that Eugene describes - most of them would be lucky to live beyond their 40s anyway!

Souness ; "They will have to finish above Man Utd & Liverpool if they are going to do it."

I'm not one to get angry when listening to these people, but do they purposely ignore us? I just hope we rub all their faces in it the shit, like puppy training. Biased fucking idiots. I hope a few of our players are taking note of the likes of Sourness. That's all the motivation I would need.

Matt, you're right but nowadays it is so blatant. They used to at least try and be objective but now most of them seem to be quite happy to show their real colours and wear their allegiances openly. I just love it every time we prove them wrong but they never learn.

Just to ask, would a loan cap working on the basis of age or nationality not be in direct conflict with the regulations re: free movement of trade? Can you stop a loan because of where a player was born? I thought the ratification to the Treaty of Rome (I think ....) and the legal wrangling over Mr Bosman's case proved footballers were 'skilled tradesmen' and as such surely normal working practise would apply?

We cannot afford to lose Coleman who balances our threat across the field superbly and has scored six goals so far this season when his predecessor has never managed a solitary one in over a decade in that position (besides the cracker of a free kick he belted in his own testimonial)

Kevin (100) You are right but it is no surprise to us is it? How many articles have we read this season about Liverpool vying for the title this season when a win against West Brom tomorrow night would have us a point ahead of them after the same number of games? Pure insanity.

My suggestion for the loan player debacle is quite simple. If you want to loan out a player you can only do so to a foreign team or a team that is a maximum of one division lower than your own's status. Cup clashes would exclude them but shouldn't be as much of an issue then as it is in the league should it?

I suggested this to a friend who said that doing so would hold back the likes of Lukaku, Moses (haha), et al but the other option is recruit them when they are closer to readiness or play them yourself. Perhaps resurrect the B team leagues of old. I realise we are the beneficiaries of Lukaku & Barry (Deulofeu is not applicable as from Barca) but they would probably both have been available on a transfer had they not been hoarded in the cattlesheds of billionaires' playthings.

I very much agree with you there, Colin. We thought Moyes was the dogs you know what, but when you have had a taste of the future in Martinez, the attacking and free flowing football is addictive. It doesn't matter if we play Man City or Fulham, I am always confident that we will get at least a draw. And Moyes style football is now outdated with the packing of midfield and one up front and that is not what Man Utd players expect.

I remember when Sven Eriksson was England Manager and the mundane football our National team played. Although he made us difficult to beat, he also made us into a team that played to not lose. It wasn't pretty stuff at times, but drawing games and winning them by one-nil wins was seen as a success, and this is exactly the same with Moyes.

Now Martinez has been in the job for just 6-7 months and he has already brought in Barry, McCarthy, Lukaku, McGeady, Alcaraz, Koné, Robles, Deulofeu, and brought through Oviedo, Barkley and Stones. It would have taken Moyes 3-4 years years to have achieve the same thing. Man Utd will not tolerate him dragging his heels like he does in transfer windows and I just feel that the fans will slowly begin to lose patience with him.

ESPN plastered a rs "could've signed Coleman". It's good Coleman gets attention like this. The lad's very focused and grounded in his interviews and hopes he uses these as motivation to do better at the derby. Love to see him grow into a legend with us.

Well, if they are on their payroll, they have to support their agenda then Colin. Closet fans, payroll, recent performance, anything you can think of. They will continue until we break that glass ceiling. I think we've done well in stating we're closed for business very early. I can't remember a recent season when our key performers are not linked to "bigger" clubs. Did they publish a piece on "Oviedo unsettled by lack of playing time" yet? Gotta be one of their ideas don't you think?

Eugene@75, is "They are really, really, REALLY...ready" a more advanced and heightened state than "Are preparing a bid" or is that someway below "Set to launch a bid" or even Are thought to be targeting"?

And what about a club who have "switched their attentions"? Is all this just journospeak or is there really, I mean, really, really REALLY a list in order of severity regarding how much we should be crapping ourselves at the thought of all these big, nasty clubs taking our players?

This always happens in January, no news so make it up.

Coleman like Baines and Barkley is being rewarded with a long contract and a pay rise so this is a no starter Coleman, like Barkley, has said that Martinez has helped him to become the player he is now.

It was in the local press last week Baines is signing this coming week followed by the others

Gonna go on a light unfocused rant here.

Seamus reminds me of the classic, old-school type of footballer – back in the day when it seemed like the great players came from smaller working towns; not academy set-ups. Players who were brought up with a strong, honest work ethic that they incorporated into both their play and life.

I was amazed with Seamus's tenacity when he first came on for us. He played out of his natural position, but he just gave it a go because he wanted to play. Never made a fuss. He embraced the opportunity to neutralize Gareth Bale at WHL. Seamus went mano-a-mano with the most electric player in the PL and never backed down.

He doesn't appear too bothered by money either. His first contract in Ireland; he thought he made it – he was happy. And here he goes and proposes to his girlfriend of 10 years – he met her when he was 15? That is some wonderful loyalty my friends.

I pray he is not hiding some real deep, dark twisted secret, or is an arrogant jerk. I've never met him, but he seems to be a really down-to-earth and humble kid. All in all, Seamus is not only a magnificent player, but just as valuable a person for us to be having at this club. You can't have enough Seamus Colemans.

Same team that won the league, they were good enough then, but now the like of Lineker say they need an overhaul because they simply are not good enough. I honestly believe that it won't matter who they sign, they will not play football the way the board of their fans expect with Moyes in charge. He simply isn't good enough and he is being found out, it would have happened much sooner if Everton had money.

I'd be very suprised if any Everton player went to Man U at the moment. Given Moyes' atrocious performance to date and the perceived disaster of the Fellaini transfer, I would have thought it unwise from his perspective to go anywhere near his old club for players. Imagine the pressure for the player too, who would be watched like a hawk for being another dud. I'd say Fellaini's WC place is in jeopardy thanks to his move- definitely not looking like career progression now.

I have just read a ridiculous rumour about Spurs coming in for Barry. How many midfielders do Spurs need FFS. They had a Barry type player in Scott Parker and binned him to Fulham. Also, after establishing himself as a vital part of Everton would Barry want to take the risk of playing in a Spurs team with dozens of midfielders (Sandro, Paulinho and Capoue in his position). If he just wanted to make money he could have stayed at City and watched the cash roll in. He chose Everton for the regular football and the challenge.

I guess the more successful we are the more we will have to endure this kind of speculation about our stars.

After looking a bit 'unexclusive' with concocted shite about Baines and/or Barkley going to OT, the knobs who claim to decide the outcome of General Elections - not content with our players - have now taken to destabilising our LOAN signings! Apparently Spurs are after Barry and the creatures across the park want Deulofeu. This is really getting ridiculous, and as for Coleman going to the Bread Devils, he would be wise to look at today's line-up, with Young playing, and Zaha probably going on loan somewhere. Familiar Moyes philosophy?

The fact that these rumours are about means that the lad is doing something right.

My mate took his young son across from Ireland earlier in the season and waited at the players entrance on the way out with a hope of getting an autograph.

Jelavic came out and rushed past muttering something about catching a plane. The lad was upset, but Coleman; upon hearing his accent, made a point about coming over to the lad and spent a few minutes making the kids day.

A gentleman.
