You need a good mix of experience and youth, as the RS are proving this year. Or we could go the Aston Villa way of a couple of seasons ago, and nearly go down.

Should we sign Kenwyne Jones cos he is younger, or even better Jermaine Beckford as he is even younger....wait a minute.

Balance is the key word, if we get him for $3 million and scores 15 to 20 in each of the three years of the contract we would have done well.

Then comes the normal "oh but no re sale value" the money you make over the three seasons will I am sure get back some of the money we outlay, plus his experience and knowledge of the game to the likes of McAleny and Kennedy is invaluable.

I won't mention Vellios as he is young, he is also kack, and will be released come end of year.

Balance is important of course but I get much more excited about a young talent with the time to really blossom than a journeyman pro that none of the big teams want and is unlikely to improve much as he's past his peak.

That's fair enough, Sam, but I remember Alan Mullery's book from many years ago when he thought Everton were in for him but it actually turned out to be the programme, This Is Your Life. apparently everton used to run dossiers on players they were interested in checking there lifestyle and making sure they was suitable, living right etc, and because he knew he was getting followed he assumed that he was on his way to Everton. Said he was gutted when the producers approached him but it tells you a lot about how professional we used to be.

The reason I am bringing this up is because reports in the Spanish press are saying that Martinez is doing exactly the same thing now, checking their credentials. Age is not always the barometer check Distin but hunger is, mate, check vellios, Peter (#362).

Sure Tony. If he's really going to add something then by all means RM should bring him in. Talent and hunger are more important than age. Barry and Distin have been two of our best players this season

Having said that I get the most excited about players like Coleman, Oviedo and McCarthy who are brought in young, develop and improve their game with us and look likely to have years and years in a blue shirt ahead of them (unless we get a ludicrous offer). We already have an ageing pro striker in Kone and unless this Gsrcia lad is really something special I'd rather we brought in someone hungry in their 20s who may just turn out to be the next Van Persie. Of course there is risk either way and balance us what's needed.

This fella would fit us to a tee. and would be a Major signing. Seems to have a lot of Drive he could Pitch in and Putt us further up the league. He seems to Ping the ball about well and could Swing us a few good wins.

Draws aren't his thing and he wouldn't Fade when the going got Rough.
