Agent switch delays Stones deal

Everton want to give super-kid John Stones a major new deal to keep him from being tempted by Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United writes Alan Nixon in the Sunday People. But any deal will likely be delayed as Stones switches between agents.

Centre-half Stones has been one of the success stories of the season since Roberto Martinez threw in the kid from Barnsley. Now the Goodison club want to reward him with a big new deal – but it is proving difficult because he is in the process of switching agents.

The 19-year-old Stones was taken to Everton by Yorkshire-based Star Management Signings, but now major firm WMG have stepped in to represent him. Agent Paul Martin – one of the leading wheeler-dealers with WMG – is expected to be Stones's new advisor when his old representation deal runs out. But as Stones is under contract to his present agent for a few more months, a worrying delay is emerging.

Everton are determined to resist all offers for Stones in the summer, but the friction behind the scenes may leave them vulnerable.

Gosling.... now that was a success story.

Last heard of getting fined 30,000 for FA betting rule breaches... loaned out to Blackpool then, playing 3 matches (as sub) for Newcastle during mediocre (normal) season for the Magpies. Great move Dan, bet you thanked your agent for that one.

As Moyes famously said "It doesn't work out for most people who leave Everton" and he should know.

How about a new FIFA rule. No club that is in debt will be allowed to sign a new player that puts them in deeper debt. Now that would level the playing field (and reduce our ticket prices).

How much representation does the Mirror think an unproven (however promising) 19-year-old needs in his upcoming contract negotiations with a club where he clearly is - and feels - wanted? The talks should take about five minutes so his present agents have plenty of time during their remaining contracted "few more months" to fulfil their professional duty to their client and any emerging "worrying delay" would be entirely their fault.
