Ya Konan is latest Ivorian to be linked

Roberto Martinez has turned to Hannover striker Didier Ya Konan in his search for striking reinforcements this summer, claim The Express.

The 29 year-old has scored 45 times for the German side over the past five years and they are apparently keen to extend his contract before the World Cup as his current deal expires this summer. Good performances in Brazil would put him in the shop window for potential suitors.

45 goals in 5 seasons. 9 per season. For a striker that's hardly prolific. I think we can do better.

We're totally screwed come the African Nations. With Kone, Lacina Traore and this guy trotting off every 2 years mid season.

Not a bad player but also not a 15 goals per season striker and a bit injury prone.
But his contract expires this season so he would be free.

I wish we could be linked with younger players, that can develope and stay healthy for years to come. A mediocre 29 yr old is not what I think Martinez is looking at right now anyway. I don't take this one seriously, hope Martinez is agreeing with me.

Is available on a free, not bad if Traore is not available on loan again. After all we have to increase the squad size, and after his injury maybe McAleny needs a loan spell of solid first team football à la Coleman with Blackpool and Duffy at Yeovil?

I don't think we should buy any more players from the Ivory Coast until it changes its name to something more modern and, I don't know, kind of African-sounding. I mean, Ivory Coast is a bit Age of Empire, isn't it?

Furthermore, I suspect that if you turned up there and asked "Have you got any ivory?" they'd probably reply "No. We did have a bit last week but it's all gone."

Kev, my beef with African players is the African cup. Every two(?) years they bugger off back home to play.
As for the ivory coast isn't it the cote de marfil in French, which I think means ivory coast in English? Confusing that.

Fully agree with the African cup points... it really is a pain to lose important players for a couple of weeks, who also come back knackered after playing/partying.

I spend a good deal of my year in Mexico, and was wondering do we have scouts in Central and South America? Perfect market for us as they don't cost too much and nearly all speak Spanish.

ps: Anybody heard any whispers of the pre-season tour? I know it probably depends on the FA Cup Final, but it would be good to start saving.

No thanks: too old, not prolific enough in front of goal and would go missing for the ACN. Also I couldn't see any of our rivals showing the remotest of interest in hiim. Lots of better options out there in Europe.
