McArthur (I know, Wigan) and Defour would be good additions to the squad but would drain funds from more important priorities.

He is owned by his agent 30% so on top of the transfer fee, you have to purchase 100% of the player to play in the prem (Rule was changed on the back of the 2007 Tevez situation). That would push the total transfer up to £10 million. Give or take. Highly unlikely in my opinion.

I was gutted when Moyes signed Fellaini instead of this guy. We have been linked with him on several occasions. Didn't Ferguson write to him following that serious injury he had? Always thought he would go to Man Utd. Mirallas would have to twist his arm à la Lukaku if we are to have any luck. Looked great at Standard Leige, how has he been at Porto?

Another dickhead full of his own self-importance; let him go to Liverpool or Arsenal then. Certainly not wanted here with that sort of attitude.

He had a couple of decent games for Liege a few seasons back and all of a sudden thought he was better than Messi or Ronaldo. He has been inconspicuous by his absence since and that says it all.

Err, didn't we make £12M on Fellaini? So why the negative comparison re signing him compared to a guy who apparently can be bought at the same price they paid for him!

Wasn't a negative comparison, Phill. I was just really impressed with the lad's performance against us and Liverpool.

I was proved wrong with regards to Fellaini, he turned out great for us and I was gutted he left for Man Utd. I also take no pleasure in him having a poor first season, especially when gobshites like Redknapp, who spent most of his career on numerous teams' sick beds, are having digs at him. I would have loved to have seen the two of them in the Royal Blue but finances dictated that wasn't happening.

Fellaini was and is overrated. Square peg in a round hole. His days at Man Utd are numbered, I reckon. We played dreadful football with him in our team and watching him at United last season, all he did was slow them down and make them play dull, pedestrian football.

Some of his CL performances were hilariously entertaining for how bad he was. Best bit of business we've done in years.

I will say it again Defour is a top top player just needs Roberto's magic to rekindle the spark, would fit in are midfield well..

The only 'big' name to be the subject of not one but two last minute big-sponds panic buys with the window ticking down to 60 minutes.

And bought by the same gaffer both times. Perhaps we should be a little bit fairer and see how he plays under a manager who aint ginger and it will not be at Man-Utd as he is on his way out over the summer.

I have been an admirer of Defour since checking him out when we were linked to him two or three (or perhaps more) years back. Would be great if we could get him for £6m (plus the agents percentage). It's interesting that he has made it into a very strong Belgian squad despite not having the greatest of seasons at Porto.

Defour was a cracking player but seems to have had a bad time last season. He may be challenged and return to form if moving here.

In the short term I would love to see us in for Esteban Cambiasso from Inter. His contract has ended so no fee. He is 32 but I watched almost very Inter game last year and he is still better than Barry and is a proper leader on the pitch.

I can't agree with all this 'Fellaini was shit' nonsense.

He had a few shortcomings, but just remember the drawback and pirhouette against Man City and Golf Club Bellamy or that stunning unplayable performance against Man Utd first day of the 2012/13 season as a couple of examples of what he could do.

We could have done with his 13 goals from midfield last season as well. He gave us 5 good years and we nearly doubled our money, so what's your problem? He made an error going to Manure, but he's far from finished.

Say what you like about Fellaini as a player, there are many different subjective opinions, but ultimately we made more profit on his transfer than any other player we have ever bought. As such I see no logic in people implying he was a bad buy.

Really Paul? You were that delighted he left that you thought it was the best bit of business we have ever done? How long have you supported the club? I could name the likes of Trevor Steven, Bob Latchford, Neville Southall, Kevin Sheedy, Peter Reid, Paul Bracewell, Leighton Baines, Graeme Sharp, Andrei Kanchelskis and hopefully Coleman, all when at there peak where the best in the country.

As Karl said he gave us loads of good memories, I still think they could find a place for him now as the defensive midfielder if he came back.

I'm with the other Paul - to get £28m off United for Fellaini was daylight robbery. Had a handful of good performances, but mostly was anon in the big games and already McCarthy has done more than he ever did (he certainly didn't protect the back four - which is what we bought him for originally, another classic example of Moyes scouting), albeit a different type of player I know.

John 259, yes you are probably right. Difficult to know exact figures but looks like we made about £16-17m off Lescott and £13-15m off Fellaini. My mistake. Though still has to rank him as a hugely successful transfer; at least financially.

HI Gareth - 295 - 1st match 1973 - season ticket 1981-2000 before leaving for Chicago but still get to around 5 games each season.

I was talking about players we sold not bought, but out of your list I would put Tricky Trevor and Seamus at the top.

And, yep, I was happy when he left and not just for the astonishing fee paid for him. I posted regularly in his last season with us that he was becoming a costly liability and, quite frankly, we are a much better team since he left. There are plenty of other reasons for this than hair-bear walking, but he is one.

Please stop the Fellaini talk - he's a dreadful footballer and wouldn't last 5 minutes in a Martinez team. He might have his merits as a target man and occasional goalscorer, but seriously, the bloke is useless as a ball-player.

It's a very poor list. I thought there might have been one or two worth a gamble.

The list is interesting. There's a few that stand out, even if they are necessarily of interest to us, in particular:

Ashley Cole, Lampard, Barry, Speroni, Gera, Ridgewell, Lescott and Bendtner.

Bendtner is an average striker and a disruptive influence. Gera and Speroni are too old, or they could be interesting. Cole obviously does not interest us. I'd take Barry back for obvious reasons. I think that Lampard can still play at a high level for another season, even if he was off the pace a bit this season, but his expected wages would not warrant a gamble, and our squad is old enough anyway. Lescott is a massive twat, and would probably want too much in wages... But he has appeal on a 2 year contract if Everton fans could see past his history with us? But I doubt it. I wouldn't mind Ridgewell as a last resort back up cb, if we cannot bring a better younger version to the club to compete with Stones, Jags and Distin.

With respect to the Fellaini talk: He had a great final season for us, and is a very good player (there are some short memories). But he is not very adaptable, and really needs a team to be built around his specific strengths. There is no way we would, or should, go for him now. His passing is not up to scratch. Where would he fit in this Everton team? I do not know what will happen to him, but I could see a move abroad or perhaps to a lesser Premier League team who play a less passing concentrated game.

Being pedantic here but surely the most profit we ever made on a sale was for Rooney.
