Everton linked with Johnson loan deal

If Sunderland are looking to get him off their books because of wages, we shouldn’t be looking at taking him. I think I’d rather have Tom Ince instead might not have had a decent end to last season but with European football next year he could be a good squad player and hopefully develop into a starter.

Tom Ince has apparently turned down Inter Milan and wants to play in the prem. Spurs Everton and Sunderland are interested.

Would rather we go for a young player looking to prove himself, than a journey man after another pay day.

On loan yes, they would need to cover a percentage of his wages though. Bit of a hot-and-cold player. Looks great one week, dire the next.

I’d take him as he is left-footed and our three current first team wingers are right-footed so it offers a different option. We should try and buy instead of loaning him. He apparently has a poor attitude but I’m sure Martinez could sort that out.

There is probably nothing in this rumour at all, it smacks of pure Sunday paper gossip and nothing more.

Johnson is one of Sunderland’s key players so why would they allow him to leave on loan?.

He would be a decent signing, I like him, not convinced he has really taken his game to the level we all thought that he was going to be at a few years ago tthough.

Often compared with Stewart Downing because their careers have roughly followed the same path, high expectations, a move to a bigger club, but failing to really make an impact.

I do think Johnson has slightly progressed the better of the two, for what it’s worth I think Downing is shite.

As I say the rumour is more than likely lazy gossip but I wouldn’t mind him, could do worse, could do better.

On the other subject, I would love Curtis Davies here.

Again watching Jagielka last night trying to resemble a footballer was painful, and he wins bugger all in the air.

We are going to need a partner for Stones eventually, and I like Davies.

I would take the Hull manager’s son. I thought he was very impressive against Arsenal at Wembley and only after he came off did they slip up.

I can’t see Sunderland letting him go on loan, isn’t he one of their best players? I was a big fan of him when he was at Man City and was surprised he went to Sunderland so if we did get him and Martinez could get him back to his best form then he could be a terrific signing.

Why would Sunderland loan out there best player? What a load of dross again – I don’t believe anything these so-called sport writers say; they never get it right.

Could be a nice bit of business to get him. As always it depends on cost.

A bit of an inconsistent player. I would prefer for us to sign Ince and Redmond on permanent deals... these two lads are very young with bags of potential and would get game time due to the heavy fixture list this coming season. Let’s start building for the future.

Get him in on loan with an agreed fee. If Martinez can do his magic then we sign him permanently in the next window. Try before you buy!

Not worth getting. A very inconsistent player much like many wingers who have skill but drift out of the game too much.

Johnson didn’t perform at a consistently high level at Sunderland so how could anyone expect him to do it for us. He only turns it on when he is arsed which isn’t often enough. Lazy bugger would restrict Seamus as he doesn’t think he has to defend. No thanks, mate, stay where you are.

Neither Di Canio nor Poyet played Johnson regularly because he doesn’t work hard enough, plain and simple. Mancini alluded to it before at Man City too, saying that Johnson thinks his job is done if he slings one decent cross in during a game, forget tracking back or sticking a foot in.

Martinez might not be so bothered about that, or at least not to the degree of the others mentioned, but I’d still stay clear. He’s never really done anything anywhere, and just plods along earning obscene money.

Jagielka is always an accident waiting to happen. His reading of the game is so poor and that is why simply he is so often caught napping out of position. His distribution is woeful for the most part and he adds very little at set pieces if goals mean anything.

So how the Hell is he in the England team? When when all is said and done, he ain’t international class although I suppose he might be England class. That’s it, isn’t it, England this minute have a fairly poor set of options for the middle of defence.

To be honest, I’d struggle to make the case for having him in our starting 11 right now and, if someone like Davies was to come – again I agree with Jim, he would be a class buy at that price – an all-round better defender than PJ with more goals to boot. Stones and Davies at the back would do me nicely not in two or three years but next year.

Fair enough, it’s just my opinion for what it’s worth. It’s also my opinion that PJ is becoming/has become one of those impossible-to-drop sort of skipper senior figures and that yep if fit he will play 40-odd games next season in our first trophy-winning season for 20 years!

Andy Finigan (244) - impressed by Alex Bruce? Really? An accident waiting to happen is the nicest thing I can say about that player.

Curtis Davies appears to have recovered a lot of the poise that made him look like a real prospect a few years back. What derailed him; injuries or loss of confidence?

Adam Johnson - no, he brings nothing to the table and not the most pacey either. I like the idea of Redmond and to a lesser extent, Ince.

Andy #244, I have to agree with Si, Bruce struggles to run straight. I'm sure he flew in and made some great looking tackles but if we got him he'd be last behind Hibbert in the CD order.

Colback looks a no-brainer to me. Cheap, young option who works extremely hard and is decent on the ball and most importantly plays in a position in which we look very understocked.

If we could get Colback and Barry then with McCarthy and a when-fit Gibson we should be covered for at least a few years until Ledson etc are hopefully ready to step up.

I'm a big fan of Curtis Davies, he has every right to be gutted about not going to World Cup ahead of Smalling and Jones. And he is another potential captain.

Adam Johnson, I reckon there is a real player in there somewhere and would be well worth a punt if we could get him on a loan as a sort of try before you buy as somebody said earlier in the thread.

And I totally agree with Sam, Colback is a complete no-brainer. Good coming off the bench as cover for the middle two and would be a useful starter in those horrible long-distance away games in the Europa League.

Colback has reportedly joined Newcastle United; that should go down well with the Mackems.

I agree with concerns about Adam Johnson. Times have changed and wingers (even tricky ones) have to work hard for the team.

I can't understand the over the-top-criticism of Jags. We had the third best defensive record in the Prem last year despite not having the 3rd best team on paper. His distribution has always left a bit to be desired but I would take his attitude, commitment and leadership qualities over many of the so called "classy" centre-halves.

We need to concentrate all available resources on a top class striker and defensive mid.

I like Curtis Davies a lot but would be wary (given our limited resources) of spending too much on a defender nearing his 30s. Think I would prefer one of the many talented young Dutch defenders such as Bruno Martins Indi or Stefan de Vrij.

Johnson, Ince, Redmond. Any or all of them would be fine with me.

I'm more concerned with our striker situation though and not very amused with our latest link – Samual Eto'o...

Come on, Everton, get some deals done before it's too late or prices become inflated after the World Cup!

Paul - I think like all of us you'll have to be a little patient - there are a number of reasons why we won't see any incoming transfer activity prior to the end of the World Cup.

The club always negotiates its overdraft in July, buying somebody prior to the World Cup might be cheaper but, if they are involved in the competition, they run the risk of being injured. BK and the board do not like paying out dead money in wages i.e. why pay a new player 2 months wages when you can leave it and save a possible £200k?

I don't think our new kit manufacturers would be very happy if any new signing(s) was paraded in another manufacturers kit, so there's another possible reason. At least a month in my opinion before we see any significant arrivals.

Patrick, it is all well and good saving the wages for 2 months but what would prevent a contract being signed now to start at the end of July?

Also, please bear in mind there will be a lot of competition for the top players this year with Man Utd, Spurs, Newcastle and QPR all chasing the market in addition to the top 4 and Italian, German and Spanish clubs.

We are talking about 7 or 8 additions. Now you don't have to be a brain surgeon to know that is nigh on impossible to achieve over a couple of weeks.

I would really have preferred we got the Barry and Lukaku situation or replacements resolved early doors and then we are only chasing squad players. I think it is nervy to suggest the overdraft may be an issue when we have had record income and a large net income from transfer activity over the last 12 months.

Jay, It's not about income – it's like any business, it's about cash-flow. Yes, the club may be in a comparatively better shape than in previous years but that doesn't mean there is a huge amount of money sat in the bank waiting to be spent. We are run by and largely dictated to by our banks/creditors who ensure that the club doesn't get carried away with its spending.

BTW – how many major transfers have taken place by other major clubs so far in the window?

Patrick, I totally understand cash-flow and also the effect additional income without expenditure has on cash-flow.

You make a good point about other clubs signings but Newcastle have already got Colback and the RS have Lambert and deals tied up for Moreno and Emre.

Whereas we have lost Lukaku, Barry and Deulofeu.
