We need to have a younger striker to link up with the rest of our young dynamic team. I hear that Lukaku is a doubt for the World Cup due to injury now so as he is injured we’ll probably buy him!

Well this sounds far-fetched to me. I wouldn’t want us to sign him now anyway. Very much a has-been whose wage demands in the past were astronomical.

In fact I can’t think of a single reason to sign him.

Not too sure we need another golden oldie in the squad, but if he is out of contract, he would certainly be a very experienced yet cheap option - mmmmmm, "Dad’s Army" up front.

Gerry #432 I wouldn’t call him a cheap option. If, for example, he commanded £80k / week, plus a £2M signing on fee on a one year contract, there’s £6M right there. As we seem to be discovering with Barry, free transfers these days are anything but.

Back to the player himself, he didn’t really impress me in his bit-part role in Chelsea’s team last season, but then under Mourihno they are not that expansive a team. I do recall his form at Barca, and whilst he was offered silly money in Russia, when that all went south, he was happy enough to take a "modest" pay cut to join Chelsea (bearing in mind taxation also).

So, even if we did have to shell out in the region of £6M for him for a one year deal, it’s probably not too much of a risk. And we are chronically short in that area.

The possible signings of rising, young, stars like Tello and Pardo are miles more exciting than an old Merc like Eto’o.

Why would we waste money on this mercenary? If we have that money to waste, put it towards Lukaku or find a hungry diving buck-toothed rat somewhere that would get us 20 goals next season.

It makes perfect sense. He is on a free; say no more. Martinez having £30M to spend looks well wide of the mark! We will be shopping in the clearance section and loan market once again.

Once again, age comes into comments on here; he turned 33 in March, so I would like to ask this: Lukaku is 20, we had him for 12 months, what is the difference to Eto’o being 33 if it’s only short term?

So can we please once and for all stop bringing age into it? I recall a World Cup winner being captain and 40 years old, Dino Zoff. Yakubu was 58 when we signed him but had the body of a 25-year-old and.banged the goals in, if we were signing a player for 5 years all good and well, but we won’t; it will be the usual 12 months.

Roberto’s dealing is obviously determined by how much he can spend this summer. As per usual, us mugs haven’t a clue how much that figure is!

Lukaku is probably the player that is his 1st choice, but he has to have alternatives & Eto’o on a 2-year contract could do a job for us. My feeling though is that he will go to highest bidder wage wise, & that will not be us.

I don’t envy Martinez trying to come to firm conclusions about who we will sign, it’s not like we can go out & spend £50m on a striker like our main rivals.

It must be a right headache, a well paid headache mind you dealing with agents & players, although what Roberto’s role in these discussions is, I don’t know either.

Lukaku and Eto’o? I’d take that!! Great line up. Even though he is getting on Eto’o has a lot to offer. I saw him at Barça once, Ronaldinho was still there, Messi just emerging. Eto’o was the best player on the pitch by a mile.

IF Roberto snags both Romelu and Samuel, well I really can see solid logic there.

I’d have Romelu even at about £27M (preferably for about £18M), ’cos he has bags of potential and plenty of years in which to fulfill it. Having Samuel in the crew would offer both example & challenge in our forthcoming 4 Trophy challenge season.

Truthfully, I’m relaxed that Roberto frequently refers to potential incoming players as needing to display "the right character" to fit in.

Despite the issues regarding injuries, I see ZERO evidence that Kone, Alcaraz, Deulofeu, Traore have been unsettling, have you?

But, realistically Eto’o?

Don’t see him ticking enough boxes for our wise & ambitious young manager, I really don’t.

Meantime, I’ll keep infinitely more faith in RM than "gossipy journos".
