Barcelona were eyeing John Stones as a potential signing last summer according to a report.

Picking up on a claim in El Pais, Mail Online report that the Spanish giants' sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta, was urged to look at the maturing centre-half as an option before the club eventually snapped up 31-year-old Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia for £14.5m and 29-year-old Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal.

The 20-year-old Stones had just broken into the senior England squad and demonstrated his versatility when deployed as a fullback in a series of friendlies prior to the 2014 World Cup. He did not make the plane for Brazil as Phil Jones recovered in time from injury but he remains one of the most promising defensive players in the Premier League.

Stones went on to sign a new contract with the Blues and cemented his place as a first-choice defender alongside Phil Jagielka at Goodison Park.
