Ogbonna emerges as 'top defensive target'

Roberto Martinez has installed Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna at the top of his wishlist as he seeks to replace Sylvain Distin according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo make the claim as part of a profile on the 27-year-old who, as an experienced left-sided centre half, would certainly fit the bill as a worthy addition to the Blues' line-up.

Given the former Torino man's pedigree, John Stones's stratospheric rise and Phil Jagielka's continuing good form, it could also point towards Martinez experimenting more with a three-man central defence next season.

The report suggests that should Everton fail to land a player who is also being tracked by Southampton and Aston Villa, then 8m-rated Scott Dann or Crystal Palace or Genk defender Kara Mbodj would be alternative targets.

28 June update West Ham have joined the hunt for Ogbonna and are preparing a 12m bid according to an English tabloid report.
