Cenk Tosun reported to have agreed terms

Monday, 25 December 2017 76comments  |  Jump to last

According to a growing number of reports in Turkey, Besiktas striker Cenk Tosun has agreed terms over a move to Everton when the transfer window opens in January.

Tosun, a 26-year-old Turkish international, enjoyed a breakout campaign at the Vodafone Arena last season, racking up 27 goals in all competitions, including 20 goals and 5 assists in 29 league starts. He has also started out the current season in impressive fashion, having netted 13 times across all competitions.

The versatile Eintracht Frankfurt youth product can play either as the focal point of his side's attack, or on either wing, and has also notched 8 goals in 24 appearances for Turkey.

Tosun has been linked with moves to a number of Premier League sides over recent months, with Newcastle United, Everton, Tottenham and Crystal Palace having reportedly informed Besiktas of their interest.

I found this news around the web, he has already agreed terms with Everton – is this rumour true?

Anyone know him?

Dermot, probably like yourself, only in the last week or so, Chelsea apparently also interested, so can't imagine he is another Brett Angell!

Would prefer we concentrated efforts on Dembele, he's young skilful and has proved himself to a degree, can only get better. Cenk Tosun untried in Prem or UK, will he fit in?

Or will he be a Turkish Delight?

Never seen him play, but four in four in the Champions League this season means he can score against good competition.

YouTube videos can be deceptive, but this one shows a guy who drives hard into the box and can really get off the ground on headers.

Mike, thanks for the link. If we need a new penalty taker, he'd step up and he can dertainly head a ball. However, after previous reels, notably Sandro Ramirez, I just can't take them seriously as harbingers of good (or bad) performance.

Looks alright on YouTube – great name – I've no idea.

Would prefer a gamble than overpaying for Giroud, 30, to ensure a top eight finish.

I was thinking of Dembele but if you can't keep your form in Scotland, what chance here? Again, don't overpay.

Absolutely no opinion on the fella. He could be Brett Angel or he could be Graeme Sharp. The one thing I know is that if we buy him he'll be nursing an injury and he'll be ready to go by May possibly. And by next August he'll be like a new signing. Lol.

Derek (#3) – my grandson reckons Celtic have agreed a deal with Brighton for Dembele.

Mind you he thinks the same as me in that he's not the greatest. There must be someone out there better than him?

17 Posted 25/12/2017 at 21:55:06
This guy would totally suck! I haven't even heard he's worth 㿼m+! Who cares about skill and potential? Sam out! ;D

Some nice moves, though! But would be untried at Premier League level, of course. Anyone know who his national goals came against?

Rumors have had it that Turkish clubs wanted Niasse for years before this season, so who knows what works over there... (Well, we didn't know Niasse the non-flop until this season...)

Good potential, and if he translates that into Premier League accomplishments, he'd be a good signing! Nothing is guaranteed, though. Salah sucked, went to Italy, then he's been kinda wow after that lot got him back!

I appreciate that Frank, @4, but was alluding more to the fact that none of us have heard of him till recently, with the media these days, surely if he was that good, we would have heard or seen something.

Although having seen the YouTube videos, which can make a Carthorse look like a Racehorse, he seems to have produced for different sides, so hopefully not a one-trick Carthorse.

John Keating, the reports are saying Dembele is being let go by Celtic, because he has lost that touch in front of goal; could only be temporary, or a motivational thing. As far as I know, the goals are the same size in England as they are in Scotland, possibly still worth a serious look, before the deal is finalised.

All players are a gamble to a degree, the old 'horses for courses' analogy. Look at Mo Salah, hate to use him as an example, but he exemplifies my point, rarely hit a barn door, or a cow's arse with a banjo, while at Chelsea!

Sandro, was pulling up small trees in Spain, and now with us, looks as though he has never seen a tree before, and a gentle breeze blows him over.

Trivia point here, from my limited knowledge of the Turkish Language, the letter C when next to a vowel, is pronounced J, so his first name is pronounced 'Jenk', but only to his blue mates!

Don't know a huge amount about him, but do remember he scored a screamer against Porto in the Champions League. Also, he doesn't need a work permit due to his German connection, which is good.

Really pleased if we take a punt on this guy rather than Giroud who is bang average. Aubemayang would be the best but we don't do Champions League players. Whats happening with Klaassen so disappointed that it hasn't worked out. I've spoken to a few Dutch guys who reckon he's brilliant?!
Derek Knox

Brent, no mince pie for you m'lad, you have only used one N, the rules state... etc. So it should be STUCK NONE in the net!

We have had a few of those over the years, KONES CUNT.

That means we've wasted our money again, stupid game.

Geoff Lambert
26 Posted 26/12/2017 at 10:59:14
Oliver (#24), That's a bit of a contradiction there! You say "we don't do Champions League players". Then in the next sentence you mention Klaassen who was captain of his team that played in the Champions League final a few weeks before he signed for us.

Sam Hoare
31 Posted 26/12/2017 at 12:28:03
I'd prefer Giroud on loan. He holds the ball well, links play and has a top class Premier League goal record. It was his wife that vetoed the move in the Summer apparently.

Tosun has a great record the last season and a half. He looks a good all round striker but reminds a little James Beattie, jack of all but master of none.

Don't know much about this guy but I have seen his name touted on these pages a few times by guys who watch more European football than I do. He knows where the goal is and looks to have a decent physical presence and allegedly won't cost the earth. Wouldn't say no to him and Dembele and ship out Niasse and Mirallas.
Oliver Brunel
40 Posted 27/12/2017 at 09:44:24
I think it was John Wilson who ran his stats vs Calvert-Lewin and he came up smelling of roses, goals and assists. I'm not saying Calvert-Lewin is not the real deal (maybe in the future) but as Keynes said 'We are all dead in the long run'.

Stats can be misleading but at this stage we need a goal threat. I confess I don't know anything about this guy except for the stats in Turkey.

Darren Murphy
41 Posted 27/12/2017 at 10:26:23
Apparently we've agreed terms... I'd like to think so because from what I've seen, he's definitely the sort of striker we need: 6ft, good in the air, cracking shot on him, great at penalties, he's got some silky skills too, not afraid to track back.

Or are them rumours about Dembele true, 㿀-27 million touted, Brenda then saying it'll take a huge bid...for someone I personally liked yet struggling in the Highlands Pub Division 2 league. We'll have to see...

Hi all...

My wife is of Turkish origin and puts me right with their names Cenk means strong man and Tosun means young..

Also when you are talking Dele Alli...
It translates "Dele" = Mad Alli 😂😂

Some things may be lost in translation so please understand.

I can't believe £20 million for a striker from a league which has the level of the Championship or League One. If this is true, it is the next pile of money blowing out the window.
Paul Birmingham
47 Posted 27/12/2017 at 21:15:00
I don't know enough about this lad, but Id prefer we'd be going for the proven player, ie, Giroud, or Dembele, whom I believe would take time to step up to the Premier League.

Interesting to see who stays and leaves Goodison Park next month.

Tony Everan
48 Posted 27/12/2017 at 22:37:38
Walsh must have done some homework on him and be confident of him being successful.

It bodes well that the business is getting done early and a deal is agreed in advance. It means lessons have been learned.

James Flynn
49 Posted 27/12/2017 at 23:56:03
I get Giroud is skilled and knows where the goal is. No doubt about it.

How many seasons has it been since he was a 90-minute regular? Was he ever that at Arsenal?

These many seasons now, he's not leaving the cozy living with the gunners.

Makes a ton of dough, plays in European tournaments, Arsenal supporters like him.

Why would he leave to have to suddenly play heavy minutes for a re-building team? Said team, realizing its potential, he'll be too old to contribute anyway?

And forget the '"His chance to play for France." If that was important to him, he'd have signed with us last Summer and got all the games he needed to impress.

Nope, he's sitting pretty right where he is.

Brian Porter
50 Posted 28/12/2017 at 07:11:43
Daniel (#42), it's perfectly legal to conduct negotiations and agree terms ahead of the window opening. He just isn't allowed to play for us prior to the deal being finalised once the transfer window officially opens.
Andrew Ellams
51 Posted 28/12/2017 at 09:10:55
Paul Birmingham, how is Dembele more proven than this guy? Tosun plays in a stronger league, has more experience and scored more goals than a youngster who has had one good season in a very poor league.
Nigel Munford
52 Posted 28/12/2017 at 09:25:28
Just to put the story straight on ‘us not doing Champions League players' Tosun has scored 4 times in this years Champions League helping his team Besiktas to top their group. As has been said early, he scored a worldly against Roma which got best goal of the group stages. Question I would have is why would he want to leave if they are through to the knock-out stages? Puzzling...
Matthew Williams
53 Posted 28/12/2017 at 15:50:28
He wanted to play in the Premier League, Besiktas need the dough & must know they won't progress much further in the Champions League with a dodgy defence & a generally poor away record.

Rest easy folks... Tosun is the real deal; made up we got him... 㿅 million?... a real steal!

Ben Mee & Adam Reach next and we're good to go till season's end.

Rest easy, Derek... this bloke knows where the net is. I've seen him play for club & country, always impresses me: strong, pacey, balance & skill... can use both feet, good in the air & takes penalties too.

Gotta whole new global audience with this bloke too, loved in his country, the main man up top, the Turks will be watching us with interest now!

Derek – Optimistic and hoping for some Turkish Delight to sweeten the cup tie Friday week. No flip-flop for me. 60-odd goals in all competitions in the last three-and a half seasons indicates at least some consistency to me.

Dembele, I would be totally under-awed by.

I've seen Besiktas play a couple of times, but didn't pay attention to this lad, although he scored. I've read up on him and there's two conflicting things for me.

Firstly, the negative. He is said to not be technically gifted. He was cut from Frankfurt's academy. He has improved rapidly, but that is said to be by heart than by technique. And that's the major positive with this guy. He's better than his talent.

He is said to be a hardworker, a battler, and those are the qualities than would endear him to the crowd. Whilst those are the qualities Sandro was said to bring, this lad is someone who is a bit older, has played abroad before, and should be able to settle in better.

Read this article, a Turkish observer clearly rates him, as does Alan Shearer: The New Bull of Merseyside Sure it's a gamble, but we need bodies upfront and he can also play on the wing, as part of a front three. Perhaps we leave Calvert-Lewin in as the No 9 and put Tosun in on the left until he settles and finds his feet. With Dom's current form, there will be less pressure on him to come in and make an immediate impact.

Matthew Williams
64 Posted 29/12/2017 at 18:55:49
I've rated him for ages, he's got the lot for a striker, but what is never mentioned is that he is not a greedy bastard, will put players in when better placed on goal.

Always hated greedy fucking Strikers... without yer team mates, you're nowhere!

Sign him up.

David Gallant
65 Posted 31/12/2017 at 13:01:12
Not sure I entirely agree Matthew Williams. I like my strikers greedy. I feel its an essential quality in a top class center forward. Of course, within reasonable bounds. I'm excited by this signing, he ticks all the boxes for me. The fact that the likes of Shearer, AC Jimbo and Rafa Honigstein rate him bodes well.

Of course, many great strikers have failed in the Premier League so its by no means a given he'll succeed but I think the stage is set nicely for him. He has a chance to lead the line for a top team (certainly the biggest he will have played for) and we have been crying out for a man to lead the line. It could be a match made in (blue) heaven.
