Offer lodged for Danish centre-half

| Wednesday, 27 June 2018 38comments  |  Jump to last
Everton and Southampton have both submitted bids for Denmark international defender Jannik Vestergaard after failing to land Lyon defender Mouctar Diakhaby, according to reports.

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has tweeted that the Blues and the Saints have made an approach to sign the 25-year-old.

A report in France, meanwhile, says that Everton lost out to Valencia in the race to sign Diakhaby despite offering him better compensation.

That's more like it, Blues. A 6ft-5in left-footed centre-back.

Rather unfriendly of Valencia, if true, given we play them in a friendly.

Like the Danish Michael Keane, strong in the air and solid enough but all the mobility of a cruise ship.

Surely we need a centre-back with some pace and agility?

I have tried via Wiki to find out if he is predominantly left-footed, but unfortunately, it didn't specify one way or the other.

He is certainly a big imposing figure, and at the right age, hopefully someone will have more information on him, and whether he would be good for us.

Left-footed. Tall. Current international. 25. What's not to like?

I would prefer to have heard it was a done deal rather than early in the process. This could mean he is being touted about. But he would be a round peg for a round hole.

Now for the left back and central striker, coupled with the promised sweeping brush to the squad.

Didn't our resident Silva expert, Steve Ferns, say that Silva likes to have tall centre-backs?! Well, this guy certainly fits the bill. Hope he's better than the last Danish centre-back we bought and able to head a football.

If he has speed he will do for me... but we had Shane Duffy who was tall but slowish.

Talking of centre-backs, what on earth happened with Jack Rodwell? Anyone know?

He's only 27 and yet in no-man's land. He was earning 㿗k a week at Sunderland last season and only played 2 games. He had such promise but, like many young Everton hopefuls, somehow didn't progress.

Tom Bowers – he's agreed to terminate his contract after a pay-off. It was originally 㿲k a week but he agreed to lower it when they went down. I know a few Mackems and they all can't belive how shite he was.

Danish, centre-back and Everton... hmmm.

Isn't that usually a recipe for disaster?

Would look good alongside Holgate who, in my opinion, is the man we need a partner for.

Reads the game, passes well, and is quick for a centre-back.

With Coleman to his right, he'll come on even more.

Who does he play for?

Thanks Iain @6, sounds okay. I would prefer Mawson, because he has proved he can do it at Premier League level; however, this guy looks good too, if we can't get Alfie.

I'd prefer Lacelles and Victor Nilsson Lindelöf becasue they will be ready for what's to come (and Lindelöf has been amazing in the World Cup so far), but Vestergaard could turn out to be a good signing as well given time to adapt.

Beaten to the ball again — I thought that our new set up M & M + Raul or whatever his name is (the super agent) was supposed to deliver us anyone we wanted... but it doesn't seem to be the case and we are back to 2nd, 3rd choices etc once more!

Rob (#14).

Why do you think we could sign whoever was top of our wanted list? In that case we'd be after Aguero, Messi et al.

A lot of players want to play European competitions so to get them we would have to offer silly money. Also, there are other reasons, location for instance why a player may prefer, say, Milan, Paris, London over us.

It has always been the case that managers identify several players for a role and then sign who they can get. Affordability is just one factor. Missing out on an alleged target does not mean we should be posting doom and gloom on fan sites.

Keep the faith.

I would rather have Zapata.

What does anybody know about the guy Merry who scored Colombia's first goal vs Poland? He's a beast, he's currently on Barcelona's books but it seems they are going to let him go this summer.

It would be interesting to get some more insight of this big feller . Especially, as Sam #3 says, he has a lack of pace. It would be a concern.

Do his other strengths make up for it?

On a different topic.

Hirving Lozano was quieter yesterday, Sweden took him seriously and gave him no space . Not unlike the treatment he would get in the premier league.I think he has a bit of developing to do yet before he becomes a starter for Barcelona.

We have Lookman who could be a better player.

Lindelof who we have been linked to had a good solid game . He may be a better, less risky option than Vestergaard. Although will cost more and will demand more wages.

Tony @19, you mention Lookman there, rather worryingly I have read from various sources; that despite Sam being fired, and the new regime in place he still wants to leave.

Like many Evertonians, I do like this lad, and feel he has been treated very shoddily, any fears he has about his future should be allayed by Silva and Brands, with guarantees that he is an integral part of the future.

Tony Everan
21 Posted 28/06/2018 at 11:45:57
Derek, The guarantee he is after may not be acceptable to Silva . He may want it contracted that he is a guaranteed starter for so many games, tying Silva's hands regarding team selections.

I desperately want him to stay, he's the best youngster we have got, but not on any terms.

He will have to man up and fight for a starting place like the rest of the squad.

Leipzig or Southampton are lesser clubs and will promise him the earth. Acceding to any such demands is a sign of weakness for a club and manager. Also a weakness in the players self belief. More worryingly maybe a bigger club than the with Euro football is sniffing. Arsenal were interested a while back.

Andrew&18 might you mean Yerry Mina, I'd be very keen at taking a look at him. Looks similar if not better to Davinson Sanchez.

Presuming the costly Keane is due to become our first pick CB next season I really think we need someone more mobile than Vestergaard, who is a very solid defender but slow off the mark. If Silva likes the look of Holgate then Vestergaard makes much more sense as a partner.

Why are some people so determined to be relentlessly negative.
The post says that one player preferred Valencia despite us offering a better package and we've now made an offer for a second player presumably from a list.

How is that us being 'beaten to the ball' exactly?
What else would you suggest we do Rob #14 - pay ludicrously over inflated transfer fees for bang average players who we don't need just to get bodies in? I think that was last season's strategy...

I've got a Great Dane (not really) so I might start a twitter rumour along the lines of;

“Everton offered Great Dane at great price”.

See which idiots fall for that one.

David #12: He plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Played 34 matches for them last year, including 2 in the cup. Scored 3 goals.

Don't know too much about him but he's got 219 matches and 16 goals under his belt, playing in the Bundesliga so I figure he must be pretty decent. Moved to Germany when he was 17 and have been there since. Might be inclined to stay unless he's looking for a new challenge.

Decent article about him from Bundesliga.com

Anyone remember Gary Rowett. Unremarkable player for us, but I think you'll all agree he is a fine manager, and a great human being.

Therefore, because you are such a great guy Gary, we will reluctantly allow you have our welsh captain for free. You'll just have to take over his contract.

I'm sure he will get you straight back up, honest. All the best Gary.

Leon Balogun, the Nigeria centre-back, looked a decent option. He's joined Brighton on a free though. Koulabhaly is a beast.

What about squeezing in a clause that we get ٢m if he helps them to a 𧵎m promotion?

Andrew Ellams

Sam, yes I do. He's monster, looks fairly mobile and he has nicked a couple of goals from set pieces mainly due to him being twice the size of everybody else.

The No 4 for Sweden is the bloke we should bid for; the lad has been fucking immense in their back line... he's even good at taking penalties!
David Milner

Yerry Mina, the Colombian, is on Barcelona's books. He was bought to replace the departing Mascherano.

Here in Spain, the rumour is that he will be allowed out on loan for a year as Samual Umtiti has signed a new contract.

It might be worth having him in on loan for a year; you never know... Barcelona may, in the end, decide to sell him on.

John (#26), Lars Jacobsen, anyone?

Tony (#19), good post, though it was as if Mexicans wanted Sweden to win, to knock-out the Germans from their Group, so the real Lozano we'll see in the very next match.

Lookman seems a lost cause, but we're still waiting and hoping. I reckon from Monday on, we're taking the next steps, as some players have left (more to leave), and the World Cup group stages have finished.

The embarrassment of being an Everton fan these days, even average players don't wanna sign.. sigh. It's gonna be a long drag of a summer.

Peter (#35) – patience is the key at the moment. I am as eager as anyone to see who our new signings are going to be but, when I start feeling impatient, I cast my mind back to the lead-up to last season. Like many of us, I thought we had done terrific business – how wrong I was.

Funes Mori is a done deal. I expect that when the ink starts drying on Rooney's DC deal, and not before then, Brands and Barrett-Baxendale will be allowed to sign on the dotted line for our incoming players. I don't think Moshiri is going to let them enter into any new contracts until Rooney's 𧵘k a week is removed from our current wage bill.

The main thing for me is that Brands and Silva get it right this time around as opposed to the complete schemozzle their predecessors, Walsh and Koeman, perpetrated.

Having said that, I hope I am correct in thinking that terms for our new centre-half(s) and left-back have already been agreed and that the announcements will be made late next week or Tuesday of the following week.

Fingers crossed.

If we are to sign a Danish centre back, I would seriously consider Simon Kjear. Danish captain. He quietly, but very effectively, goes about his defensive duties with composure & a great reading of the game. He's athletic too. I watch him at Sevilla & rate him highly. If it's a great Dane we want, I'd like him! Well & truly took care of Lukaku in both European legs against Man U, if that's any measure.
I'm with all of you in the 'be a shame to lose Lookman' camp. Just hope Marcel/Marco can convince him.
