Everton finalising deal for Gomes and 'want' Cillessen

| Friday, 14 June 2019 53comments  |  Jump to last
André Gomes is close to securing a permanent switch to Everton according to reports.

Paul Brown of the Daily Star claimed earlier today that terms had been agreed with the player and Barcelona and that the final fee could be less than the €30m that many outlets had been reporting was the Spanish club's asking price.

Sport in Spain are also now saying that completion of the deal is imminent and there are suggestions that the midfielder will put pen to paper on a contract worth £120,000 a week.

The same outlet is also reporting that Everton are "a reliable option" for goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen who is apparently in search of more regular action after losing his place to Marc-André ter Stegen.

The Blues have already signed Jonas Lössl this summer on a free transfer from Huddersfield but the report says that they are braced for a bid from Manchester United for Jordan Pickford if, as expected, David de Gea leaves Old Trafford this summer.

Great to have Gomes on board for the entirety of the pre-season schedule, can only imagine he'll go from strength to strength.

The on way I can see us going for Jasper Cillessen would be if a domino effect occurred;

De Gea to PSG
Pickford to United
Cillessen to Everton
Buffon to Barca

Otherwise makes no sense?

Posted on the Pickford thread:

Some white noise about Cillessen at Barcelona. Is it possible with Pickford’s stock so high we sell for massive money and a good relationship with Barcelona helps get this lad in?
We might reasonably expect £75m for him and that could bank roll and striker?

The better question is where does Pickford go?

So what soundbite do we want?

Well at least we are now getting Barcelona's cast offs rather than United's when Moyes was the manager

Or

Barcelona are now just a feeder club for Everton

I fully expected us at some point to get Gomes, it was hardly one of football's hidden secrets, but £120K/week? I am a bit bewildered as to the Cillesen links, but have seen it mentioned too often recently, especially when it is all but certain that Jonas Lossl will be joining after July 1st.

We still have Stekelenburg too, who I suspect will be going, either as a Coach or whatever, but that leaves a question mark regarding Pickford, is he moving on? Why else would we go for a top keeper in Cillesen, while we also have Stek and Lossl, unless, Jordan is moving on too? He has been linked with Manure if DeGea moves.

Good news on Gomes,if true. Not sure the goalkeeper thing has any truth in it though.I am just waiting to hear that our first signing is complete,to be followed by a few more quality one,s!!
I am hoping we get all our transfers done nice and early this season, for a change

Pure speculation about Cillesen IMO with Journo's putting 2 and 2 together and making 5.

We have no intention of selling pickford. We didn't need to get pickford under a massive contract because he still had 4 years remaining, but we tied him down to us for longer because he isn't going anywhere. You don't buy into any rumours coming from the Daily Star, that's just worthy of chip paper. So everyone can calm down on the "Oh my god pickford might be going" rumours as it's bollocks

Nonsense on the Cillessen link; Pickford isn't going anywhere.

Great news on Gomes; if true.

Gomes for under 30m euros is proof that the transfer market is nuts. He’s clearly a champions league standard player and dominated the best midfields in the league this season. In his first season in a new league. With no pre season.

If he was English his price would be double or more (see Declan Rice ) these are the deals we need to look at. Players that have already proved themselves enough to get moves to the very top teams but are available because for one reason or another it didn’t work out.

Look are Digne. It’s no disgrace not being able to dislodge Jordon Alba at Barca. Top players get transfers to top teams. However you could be the second best attacking player in the world and still warm the bench if you went to Juve and had to compete with Ronaldo. Doesn’t make you a bad player.

For what it’s worth I see us taking this route under Brands more and more. Complimented by some home grown products and some unknown South American’s using his scouting network. Exciting times.

A few years ago we had Leon Osman and Brian Oviedo.

The single biggest elephant in the room will remain to be a striker. It will be three seasons since Rom left. Imagine where we’d have finished last season with 15-20 goals from a striker.

Gomes a great signing, as for Cillessen link, doesn't make sense, unless we're cashing in on Pickford.
Paul Dewhurst
11 Posted 14/06/2019 at 17:23:26
Si 9 - couldn’t agree more about players warming the bench I remember watch AC Milan and seeing Papin getting dropped after scoring a Hat trick because Van Basten was fit again!

I think Cillesen it’s a good signing then we have two goal keepers Vying for No1 Keeps Pickford on his toes! He made mistakes on and off the pitch last season but there was no fear he could loose his place!

But John at number 2 makes a good point paid £30m if some one offered £80plus (Keppa was £70m+) And that went towards the squad we could end up stronger for it?

Phil (Kelsall) Roberts
12 Posted 14/06/2019 at 17:25:41
Annika #5 - we got our transfers done early a few years ago.

Remember Klassen - 15/6 (tomorrow)
Pickford - 15/6 (tomorrow)
Keane 3/7
Sandro 3/7

And a few months later the manager was sacked because of poor results.

Just in response to Jay, the alternative view here is that it’s a rumour that makes no sense at all, there is no 2 + 2. This makes me think there’s more to it, as it’s not a rumour you’d make up. It’s clear Everton definitely don’t need another top level keeper, so why would a journo go for that one?

The ‘sell Pickford for ridiculous money and sign a quality replacement for far less’ makes a little bit of sense to me. However, I’m a believer in continuity and I’d much rather do minimal business and build a team that gels together. Hence, if a position is sorted, I don’t want to mess around with it.

Get the Gomes deal done swiftly so we can concentrate on areas that need strengthening.

As for the Cilissen report I don't buy into it, Lossl wouldn't be very happy would he.

Mike Allison
17 Posted 14/06/2019 at 17:43:13
No he’s not tall. And there’s no way he’s signing for Everton without being told he’s starting. We’re not in Europe, so we don’t have enough matches to keep players happy.
Brian Wilkinson
18 Posted 14/06/2019 at 18:36:09
Not seen much of the Barca keeper, but if Everton are looking to cash in on Pickford, I would take Stokes asking price of £20 Million for Butland and use the rest with add ons, on tying a top class striker down.

All paper talk, taken with a pinch of salt, but Would not lose any sleep, if we landed Butland.

Hope Gomes rumour is correct, he's a class player.
Not fussed if Pickford was sold, he's over rated and too erratic in my eyes.

Jay Harris
21 Posted 14/06/2019 at 19:16:29
Mike the basis of 2+2 is that De Gea refused a 5 year contract extension at United and Barca want rid of Cillisen.

So the media using their usual "must be a sensational story in this" invent that United want and would get Pickford and we would pick up the pieces with Cillisen.

Rob Halligan
22 Posted 14/06/2019 at 19:37:47
Jay, understand where you are coming from, so in that case, if De Gea leaves United, why doesn't Cillessen just go straight to them?

I'm sick of any player deemed not good enough to play for United, but ok to play for us. Not saying Cillessen is not good enough to play for United, but the reason he wants to leave Barcelona is because he's no longer the number one goalkeeper, so he's hardly likely to join us just to fulfil the same role. Besides, it's rumoured that United are interested in Cillessen.

Frank Crewe
23 Posted 14/06/2019 at 20:04:46
Gomes is certainly a strong possibility. Although until they get his name on a contract I'm not 100% certain it will happen. The Cillissen rumour is just a load of nonsense. One of those ridiculous transfer rumours that the "News Now" sites thrive on. Click bait.

Got to agree on Butland, he’s a better keeper in my opinion, based on traditional attributes. Pickford is good, but considered special because of his distribution from what I can tell. Butland’s isn’t as strong.
Andrew Ellams
26 Posted 14/06/2019 at 20:42:55
I'd have to question why nobody picked Butland up when Stoke went down. Has he been the same player since he had that 13 month injury?
Jay Harris
27 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:09:16
Good point Andrew and Butland isn't getting any younger.
The two from Burnley looked good at times but its about consistency and playing for top six not relegation teams.

some keepers can stand out when they are being bombarded with shots etc but when it comes to a higher quality team they are out of their depth.

Gary Willock
28 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:12:34
Pickford's got character. The Big Man and Wobbelaar had character. Let's keep the faith and let England's number one become as good as I hope he can be.

Continuity is key, Gomes back, hopefully Kurt, and then one or two on top and away we go.

Andrew Ellams
29 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:15:09
We've got the best keeper that we are going to get for where we are right now. If we could sign Gomes and Zouma, I only see a striker being a change from last season's starting eleven. Like most of the Premier League, we need better strength in depth to take us forward.
Rob Halligan
30 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:21:26
One of two still hoping we can get Zouma back. This is highly unlikely though. There is still a little bit of hope, however, as I get the impression from reports that the only reason Chelsea won't sell Zouma is because of their transfer ban. In other words, they can't sign any replacements.

We need their transfer ban to be at least suspended, in order to get Zouma back.

Andrew Ellams
31 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:24:16
Rob, when Chelsea's case comes up at the CAS, precedent suggests that the ban will be suspended for at least this window – so we can only live in hope.

@Rob 21

Can you name a club a player may not be good enough for but still good enough for Everton?

After all, apparently Gomes isn't good enough for Barca and Man Utd have shown no interest in him so is he good enough for us?

Players are bought because they may fit into whatever plan the manager has. Whether they are or are not good enough for this or that club is irrelevant. Only whether they are good enough to do a job for us.

John Barrow
34 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:38:02
Andre Gomes is an exceptional footballer, a full pre-season into him and we will have one hell of a signing on our hands. The derby game last season at Anfield, he totally dominated for most of the match and we should've been out of sight with his chance and Mina's before their late stuffy winner.
Andrew Ellams

Not such good news, Rob. Just read a story from yesterday saying that Chelsea's case won't come up in this transfer window.
Rob Halligan
36 Posted 14/06/2019 at 21:42:41
Fair point, Frank, but my post at 21 was more of a back up to what Jay at 20 was saying, in that united, or rather the media, were hoping that United could get Pickford from us, and that we would get Cillessen as a replacement. As I said, if Cillessen was that good, then why don't the media tout him for United? I'm not saying for one minute that Cillessen is any better or worse than Pickford, and now it seems like rumours are starting about him going to United.

Of course, all this is just media bullshit.

Gomes will be a bargain for under €30M. There was a worry Spurs would bid but they've turned their interest to the young Argentinian from Real Betis whose name I forget. Ironically he's the player I'd want us to buy if Spurs were still interested and actually signed Gomes. Real Betis want crazy money. Something like €80M. Of course, Spurs will get him cheaper but I think it illustrates that Gomes will be a bargain.

As for Cillessen, I hope it's journo BS cos we've just signed a decent No 2 from Huddersfield. If Cillessen did come in, I see it as a sign that we'll cash in on Pickford. The only keeper I'd want us to sign is Jack Butland. I think he's as good as Pickford and would cost about a quarter of the money in what we'd get cashing in on Jordan. That scenario would be fine for me. But it's a no for Jasper Cillessen being our No 1.

Good point, Frank @ 32. There are so many factors. One team's misfit can be a genius elsewhere. De Bryune... There are loads of them.

Do the kids like their local school?
Do you have a network of friends and family?
Does the coach put an arm round the shoulder?
Do you get on with your team mates?
Do you feel wanted?

These lads are like us with loads of money. It all needs to fall into place and it seems to me that we are on the way to reaching that.

Transfer ban is what the press are saying to drive up the price, Chelsea have known Sari was likely to leave and they know the transfer ban but they have shit loads of players about 30 odd out on loan. Till they get a new manager and he says who he wants and then who the club need off the wage bill for FFP will be the deciding factors. Transfer Ban is a smoke screen

Si #9 and John #33, give it a break. Yeah, we'll all be pleased if Gomes remains, but the hype is ridiculous. No, he definitely did not "dominate the best midfields in the league this season" (whaa???), and no, he didn't dominate the Derby at Anfield. I was there. He had a good game, but he wasn't even our MOTM, let alone dominant (Mina, Gueye and Bernard were all superb).

The guy is a quality player. He is not a superstar and never will be. Leave it at that.

Great news on Gomes, and even whilst not playing, the lad has gone out to meet and see what EFC is and means. Let’s hope it happens, and if it does it’s a massive plus.

He’s got Blue Blood and has the fight, if we get him, then it will bolster belief for the club and all of us.

Cillessen association, as at this time of year is natural, but I see it as standard journo bull.

Age factor is in keepers not critical but I see plenty of potential in JP, and with a marshalled defence and midfield, EFC, developing in to a football team, that will be able to fight, slug it and win with style.

Yes assuming we keep the same belief from the end of last season, and grow it with some new signings.

There’s hope on the horizon and if the team physche wisens up and they keep growing, let’s slug it out in 12/2019, with the so called top 5.

We live in hope eternal. “What’s Our Name?”

Cillesen might be a good keeper, but 1 save in 20 penalties is pretty bad I think.

Gomes only lacks in goals scored, as does Gueye. They are both players to trust in defence but lack the offensive little extra to make them top players.

And why does everyone keep hacking on Osman? I saw him as a good player for us, only lacking a more muscles and/or height. More than 300 games for Everton should say something.

Cant see the Cillessen deal being true, but I'm all for a philosophy at our club that every player has a price, and if Man u wanted to offer silly money for Pickford then Cillessen would be a very decent replacement.

Clubs like ours need to find a way to compete, and although seeking your better players isn't always ideal, it's something that's worked well in the past for other clubs.

A decade or so ago Seville done it in Spain with Sergio Ramos, Julio Baptista, and the late Reyes, to build a future for themselves in which seen the club do more in the past decade than they've done in almost a century before hand.

Spurs done it in the past and are now a true force to be reckoned with, and our neighbour's have done it over the past few years to help them become one of the biggest and best teams around (wow that hurt).

When stupid bids come in we have to look at them, £70m for Pickford was like £50m for Stones, it's there maximum value, there never going to go much higher.

You have to box clever with this approach though, players like Richalison shouldn't be allowed to leave for £100m as hes so young, hes scoring goals and he has a long deal, not to mention hes Brazilian and the big Spanish clubs go nuts for talented Brazilians, hes not at his maximum value yet.

We need to keep buying talented youngsters with resale value, and stop buying the finished article like Sigurdsson (whom I like btw) as that's not a sustainable business model for us.

I think the Cillessen deal is pie in the sky, but I believe if Pickford was sold then we would get a suitable replacement for much less money simply for the fact that Pickford is English.

Mike 41 - perhaps some hyperbole of his performances last season was made but the potential is huge. When he first came into our side he did dominate midfields and was the classiest player on the pitch for most games. His form, unsurprisingly given no pre season and new in the league, did take a big down turn like the rest of our team.

I remember wanting Arteta after he had been on loan but I didn’t realise how good he was and he got better and better with us until his serious injury. I think you will find Gomes will do the same for us. He is pure quality, perhaps he will never be best midfielder in the league, Arteta was nave as good as Fabregas, but I think you will be surprised about just how good Gomes will be.

For me, he would be a key signing to our team pushing to get higher in the league and play better football.

Terry Farrell
48 Posted 15/06/2019 at 07:59:44
Gomes is class but needs to cut out stupid fouls around our box when he gets wrong side of his man. I would not sell Pickford as he is too important to us.
Butland totally over rated as is Cillasen. Don't believe the hype we have the best between our sticks.

Sounds to me like someone is trying to unsettle Pickers to make him push for a move to a media-loved team (psy-ops). The lad seems happy at Everton and most of the fans love him despite his eccentricities.

Cillesen would never come to a club like Everton to be a number 2. Mark this one down as mischief making by a paid mercenary/journalist.

Martin Berry
50 Posted 15/06/2019 at 08:24:57
The signing of Gomes will be a bargain, we needed someone with his class but also a physical presence in our midfield.
We saw some of his swagger that made Barca cough up for his Valencia services.
As for their keeper, not a chance as we are sorted at keeper now, however with Barca having a fire sale we may yet dip our toes in and get a surprise bargain ?

Gomes is classy - on and off the pitch. A proper "Blue". Sign him.

He, like Bernard, will be even better with a full pre season behind them.

Pickford is still very young for a keeper. He's bloody good now, but with a mistake or two still in him. In a few years he will be right at the top. I definitely want him to stay. The guy's a winner and appears to 'get' Everton.

Get Zouma in if we can, or someone akin. Get Mina fully fit. Get Keane to continue his forward trajectory. Get Holgate back. Robinson and Bainsy to cover Lucas.

See if PSG will pay £35m+ for Idrissa (but I hope we keep him).

Bring through some of the younger lads.

Get Neres.

Buy a goal scorer.

Get that first spade into BM dock.

And get a sprig of lucky heather off an old Gypsy woman.

The only place with more 'gets' is Anfield.

If we were looking for another keeper I'd recommend Fariñez, young Venezuelan keeper. Played in the sub20 the other year that England won, now playing for the big boys team and still only 21.
Everytime I see him he looks good, currently saving a 10 man Venezuela against Perú.
